Mixed appetizer platter – Tuk Tuk Noodle Bar

Mixed appetizer platter - Tuk Tuk Noodle Bar
Thai fish cake, calamari, chicken satay, salt and pepper spare ribs, spring rolls and prawn crackers. Set Menu A £11.80 per person
Tuk Tuk Noodle Bar, London ENGLAND

Oh lord, this plate was large! And unfortunately, everything on it was overcooked, dry, rubbery and disgusting. The only thing that was actually ok even when it was over-fried was the prawn chips. They still had a great crunch and good flavor. We kind of just picked through everything else, took a small bite and that was enough. That was probably for the better because this was just WAY too much fried items for two people especially since there was plenty more food yet to arrive. It made me sad to look at the large pile of uneaten food on this plate though. I guess that’s why the set menu was so affordable – they sacrificed quality for quantity.

Prawn risotto – La Mar Salada

Prawn risotto - La Mar Salada
Pedro Ximenez sherry and parmesan cream.
La Mar Salada, Barcelona ES

This restaurant is on the boardwalk naer the Playa de St. Sebastia. I was hungry after walking around all day so I ducked in for a late lunch. I think I was the only non-Spanish person in the restaurant, lol! The food was really good and decently priced. I loved this risotto! It was super creamy and the prawns were cooked perfectly. Unfortunately, I was REALLY bad at taking food pics during this trip so don’t expect many, sorry. 😦

La Sagrada Familia

La Sagrada Familia, Passion Facade (western side). The cranes are kinda ugly, but I guess this Roman Catholic church designed by Antoni Gaudi is constantly under building and restoration. It’s pretty frickin’ amazing regardless!

Moriawase sushi - Sushi Ran
Mmm, the raw fish at Sushi Ran is SO fresh and delicious! I’m glad that we ordered this chef’s choice of nigiri, NOMS!

Crab cioppino - Fishermen's Grotto
Dungeness crab, prawns and clams in a rich tomato stew. You pick it from the shell. We provide the bib. $29.95
Fishermen’s Grotto, San Francisco CA

Mmm, this was SO delicious! The tomato stew was certainly rich and flavorful and there was A LOT of cracked dungeness crab in there. I had fun wearing the plastic bib and picking out as much crab meat as possible. 🙂

Tutto mare – Boulevard Cafe

Tutto mare - Boulevard Cafe
Spaghetti, prawns, clams, mussels, fish, garlic, basil, white wine, red sauce. $15.95
Boulevard Cafe, Daly City CA

This restaurant is one of those places where the menu is gigantic and appears to contain food from all cuisines. Usually the food at these places are sorely lacking, but the things I ordered were actually pretty good. The tutto mare had plenty of seafood which I was surprised about since most places will skimp of the more expensive proteins. It had bold flavors and the pasta was perfectly al dente.

Avgolemono soup - Boulevard Cafe
Avgolemono soup. Traditional Greek soup with chicken, rice, lemon and egg. $2.95
This was OK. It was mostly broth.

Steak and prawns – Zapata Mexican Grill

Steak and prawns - Zapata Mexican Grill
Grilled steak, prawns, rice, black beans, guacamole, salad, salsa and 4 corn tortillas. $13.50
Zapata Mexican Grill, San Francisco CA

I was pleasantly surprised by this plate – I thought it was going ot suck! The prawns were acutally really good though. They were large, juicy and tender. The grilled steak could have been more tender and less salty, but it still tasted great with everything else. And of course, they make sure to pack the plate! 🙂

Garlic prawns – Zadin

Garlic prawns - Zadin
Prawns lightly fried and tossed in a caramelized garlic chili sauce. Served on a bed of coconut scented rice and garnished with a pea shoot mango salad. $19
Zadin, San Francisco CA

This was flavorful, but definitely over-sauced. I love me some sauce, but these poor prawns were drowned in it and totally got lost. The pea shoot and mango salad was very tasty though.

“Peel your own” prawns – Anthony’s HomePort

Peel your own prawns - Anthony's HomePort
Six pack served with cocktail sauce. Happy hour $5
Anthony’s HomePort, Seattle WA

I don’t get people who are afraid to get dirty while eating. I don’t mind peeling my own prawns, cracking my own crab, sucking shrimp heads, whatever it takes to get my delicious food! I think it’s more fun when you get a little dirty while eating. That’s why I’m not afraid of eating ribs or whole crawfish in groups. But to each his own.

Super prawn taco – La Corneta Taqueria

Super prawn taco - La Corneta Taqueria
Black beans, rice, lettuce, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, spicy pico de gallo salsa. $5.50
La Corneta Taqueria, San Francisco CA

They sure know how to pile on the toppings at La Corneta! The prawns were perfectly cooked, tender and very flavorful. Perhaps, it was a tad on the salty side, but I enjoyed this very much!

Pho do bien – Hometown Noodle 2

Pho do bien - Hometown Noodle 2
Seafood noodle soup with prawns, fish balls, and squid, accompanied with a plate of bean sprouts, basil leaves, lime wedge, and sliced jalapenos. Large $7.95
Hometown Noodle 2, San Bruno CA

This tasted pretty good, but they were definitely skimpy with the seafood. You got two pieces of each if you count that the fish balls were cut in half. Meh.

Purple blazing star flowers (Liatris spicata, Asteraceae)

Purple blazing star or prairie gay feather flowers (Liatris spicata, Asteraceae), West Field Road. It’s always interesting to post flower pics on this blog because that’s usually when I find out what the actual names are. I can usually get them to at least the family level before I have to do additional research, but there are just way too many ornamentals out there! 🙂

Tam bi tom thit – Vung Tau Restaurant

Tam bi tom thit - Vung Tau Restaurant
Shredded seasoned pork, grilled jumbo prawns, and grilled pork served with broken rice and pickled vegetables. $12.50
Vung Tau Restaurant, San Jose CA

This was just ok. I don’t know why I keep getting the Vietnamese shredded pork? I never like it because it’s SO dry and chalky tasting. The grilled pork and prawn were decent, but at $12.50 for a lunch plate I expect it to be of better quality. And the service was SLOW!
