Hamachi crudo – 1760

Hamachi crudo - 1760
Bulgogi vinaigrette, ‘siracha’, celery, yuzu, satsuma. $17
1760, San Francisco CA

Hmm, this was a pretty new and inventive dish for me, but did it really work? I’d say no for several reasons. I don’t think all the flavors worked in harmony. The bulgogi flavor with citrus from the satsuma and yuzu along with sriracha and creeping rosemary really didn’t do it for me. There was too many strong, competing flavors so it each bite was confusing. There was also very little hamachi on the plate. The rosemary and and celery ribs were also stringy and unpleasant to chew through. (And they misspelled ‘siracha’ on their menu.)

I love good, fresh sashimi and it’s pretty decent at Barracuda. It’s not the best cuts ever, but they’re good quality and they taste great!

Crudo sampler – Bar Crudo

Crudo sampler - Bar Crudo
(Left to right) Arctic char: horseradish crème fraiche, wasabi tobiko, dill. Scallop: pineapple quince, roasted parsnip, lime caviar yuzu vinaigrette. Butterfish: roasted tomato aioli, asparagus coins, castelvetrano olives, citrus. Yellowtail: grapefruit, fennel, black garlic aioli, meyer lemon. Crudo for 2 $28
Bar Crudo, San Francisco CA

I’ve had this sampler before and it wasn’t as good this time around. The fish didn’t seem as fresh and they were a bit clunky on the plate. The flavors were really complex, interesting and very different between preparations. My favorite was probably the arctic char which is surprising because I’m not a huge horseradish/wasabi fan. I just thought this portion ate the cleanest and was refreshing.

Yellowtail crudo – Padrecito

Yellowtail crudo - Padrecito
Mango, avocado, chipotle-agave salsita and blue corn chips. $15
Padrecito, San Francisco CA

Hmm, this isn’t what I expected when I saw “yellowtail crudo” on the menu. It’s ok becuase this actually tasted pretty good. I would have preferred if there was less mango so that you could properly taste the yellowtail though.

5 color sushi bowl - Island Gourmet Markets
Ahi, salmon, yellowtail?, imitation crab, spicy tuna, avocado, shiso, pickled ginger, wasabi. $6.85

I’m amazed at how much better the grocery store sushi is in Hawaii than in California. And it’s cheaper! We’re getting robbed on the mainland!

Hamachi and uni nigiri – Tokkuri Tei

Hamachi and uni nigiri - Tokkuri Tei
Yellowtail over rice. 2 pcs $7
Sea urchin over rice and wrapped in seaweed. 2 pcs $12
Tokkuri Tei, Honolulu HI

I have mixed feelings about this restaurant. I felt that the service was nice, a bit slow, but the sushi wasn’t that good. I expected fresher sushi in Hawaii. The hamachi was good, but the uni didn’t taste good to me. I’m not an uni expert, but I’ve had it here and there. This sea urchin didn’t taste right though! Ew!

Tasting spoons – Saru Sushi Bar

Tasting spoons - Saru Sushi Bar
Four spoons $12
(left to right) Halibut – halibut tartare with grated lime, yuzu juice and Japanese sea salt. Kanpachi – young yellowtail with truffle oil, ponzu, garlic chips and scallions. Scallop – with cucumber sauce, yuzu and fresh wasabi. Ankimo – seared monkfish liver, spicy radish, scallions with garlic ponzu.
Saru Sushi Bar, San Francisco CA

These little spoonfuls were so fun and delicious, but I think $3 per spoon is a bit much. I do love that they all tasted so differently and had their unique flavors and textures. It’s hard to decide which was my favorite, but I think I’ll have to say it was the kanpachi because it had the most variety of taste and texture. The seared monkfish liver was a nice surprise. They were all very good though!

Buckeye roll – Asian Gourmet & Sushi Bar

Project 365: Day 59

Running around town(s) performing errands before Codes’ birthday party tonight. Just went and bought 10 potted orchids for centerpieces, dropped some stuff off at the event site, then gonna help prepare some food for the buffet. That sounds like a lot, but it’s actually been a pretty chill day. We kinda partied a little too hard last night and now we’re not feeling so spectacular today, hehe! At least I’ll look cute tonight!

Asian Gourmet & Sushi Bar, Gahanna OH

This monster roll had A LOT going on! Actually, there was too much going on and you really couldn’t figure out what everything was. It tasted great though, but so does everything that’s deep fried. I guess I ordered it because I AM in Buckeye territory and I thought that it’d be a safe bet in terms of sushi in a midwestern state. I remember having sushi in Ohio last year, and it was horrible. This wasn’t that bad.
