Niman Ranch cheeseburger – Fish & Farm

Niman Ranch cheeseburger Fish & Farm

Ground beef patty cooked medium with a fried farm egg, grilled onions, white cheddar, house made pickles, secret sauce, Acme bun, and French fries with fried parsley. $14 plus $2 additional for egg
Fish & Farm, San Francisco

Yum, this thing was delicious! You might think – a burger is a burger is a burger. Not so! There are plenty of shitty burgers out there and you all know it! This burger was absolutely nommy. It was also very large and I could only finish less that 3/4 of it. I didn’t even eat the top bun. I scraped the secret sauce off of it and set it aside. Way too much carbs already with the French fries and all.

The beef was so good and I loved their homemade pickles. Every part of that burger was good. The French fries was also delicious and I really like their dipping sauce. It took us awhile to figure out what it was, but I think we decided it was a horseradish bbq sauce. What a great combination! It was on the runny side, but it tasted great.

Marinated grilled calamari – Fish & Farm

Marinated grilled calamari Fish & Farm

With orange zest, garlic, shallots, parsley, olive oil, arugula and frisee. $12
Fish & Farm, San Francisco

This was SUPER good! When I read the menu item, I thought it was going to be more like calamari a la planxa – something whole and more dry. I was pleasantly surprised when this more salad-y dish arrived! I will say that there was A LOT of dressing on the squid, but I really didn’t mind because it was so good. It’s some of my favorite flavors and I’m gonna admit that I even used some bread to soak of the leftover dressing at the end, lol! The squid had a nice texture that wasn’t rubbery and the dish was quite large for an appetizer portion, heck yeah! I would definitely order this again.

Bread and butter Fish & Farm

Bread and butter. Complimentary. Crusty bread with real butter = happy me!

Ola’s steak and potato hash – Jones

Project 365: Day 25

I only had a mild hang over this morning after my work birthday party last night. As much as I complain about work, I do like the people I work with. That’s comforting. I think everyone enjoyed themselves. I had enough food for everyone and I even sang a few songs on the Magic Mic, lol!

Of course I had to have another cocktail this morning while I finished cleaning up the apartment (see below). What?! It makes house work go by faster!

Then I headed out to Jones which is downtown in the Tenderloin/Union Square area to meet B2 for brunch. She’s so sweet! She wanted to take me out to brunch since she missed my actual birthday last weekend. I’ve never heard of this place but it’s actually really cool. The space is super cute and the vibe is young and energetic.

I didn’t focus much of the food since I was having such a great conversation with B2, but I think it was pretty good. And they have bottomless mimosas so you know we had that! We had such a great time catching up and talking that brunch lasted 2 hours and 45 minutes, nice! I need to hang out with B2 more often! No really, she’s an amazing person and we have a lot of common interests so it works.

Now I’m dreading work tomorrow, but at least I get to hang out with Silverfox tonight. I missed him while he was away.

Ola's steak and potato hash Jones

Steak and potatoes with sausage, pancetta, carrots, onions, and parsley with a sunny side egg on top. $16
Jones, San Francisco

Talk about hearty! This plate had SO much steak, then more sausage and pancetta added, geez! It was very good. I wish the egg had been poached so that it was runnier but that’s only a minor complaint.

Ola's steak and potato hash Jones

We sat at the bar and the service was great. I would definitely go back for brunch. I’m not sure that they have full on dinner service. The interior is also very nice and I can see why this is a popular drinking spot!

Patio view Jones

Here’s the view from the balcony, which is a surprise because you actually have to walk down into the space from the street entrance. Because Jones Street is so steep, one end of the patio actually overlooks Geary Street. It’s very cool.

Smirnoff lemonade cocktail

Hair for the dog. Smirnoff Tuscan Lemonade cocktail topped with Santa Cruz organic strawberry lemonade. Here’s my morning cocktail. Gotta love Sunday Fundays!

Sopa de albondigas – Mijita

Sopa de albondigas Mijita

Mexican meatball soup. Beef and pork meatballs in a tomato based broth with carrots, onions, zucchini, celery, lime, parsley, and shredded tortilla chips. $8
Mijita, San Francisco

Yet another soup that was served luke warm! Was this suppose to be served that way? I like my soups HOT! If they’re too hot, then I’ll just wait a couple minutes for them to cool down, but I enjoy them so much more when they’re able to warm my stomach, literally! This soup was OK. Not sure why it’s on the 7×7 Big Eat list. There are plenty of other soups out there that have more flavor (and are served piping hot). The meatballs are tiny, making them easier to eat I suppose. With that much vegetables in the soup, you’d think that it’d have a little more flavor.

Oh, and a sea gull tried to attack me while sitting at the outside table. That was my cue to move inside, but there are still birds running around there too. Gross, so unsanitary!

Fried chicken salad – Bakesale Betty

Project 365: Day 22

Today was another bike-to-work day! I didn’t have to work until noon so it was perfect to get some cardio in. I didn’t go to the gym in the morning, but stayed home and watched some tv and work on the computer. I was very productive!

The ride went fairly quickly, partly because there wasn’t too much wind. The 15 mile ride still took me over 50 minutes though. It’s a nice break from the gym. I don’t really have much more to report. My work vehicle got traded in for a newer one, so that was a little sad. I was emotionally attached to my work car, hehe! Now it will probably be auctioned off to a life of crime. 🙂

One more work day before the weekend – can’t wait! Work party at my place on Saturday, brunch with B2 on Sunday and possibly dinner with Hubbs. I know, my life is SO difficult! LOL

Fried chicken salad Bakesale Betty

Chopped, crispy fried chicken breast atop a zesty coleslaw of cabbage, red onions, bell peppers, and parsley. $10
Bakesale Betty, Oakland CA

I really love this salad from Bakesale Betty. You get so much delicious fried chicken, and let me tell you, it’s pretty frickin’ delicious! What really surprises me is how amazing the coleslaw is! It’s vinegar based and not mayo based so it very light and the citrus-y. It definitely brightens up the salad and balances out the fried chicken. Get some of the hot sauce and dip the chicken pieces for the perfect bite!

Macaroni and cheese – Cafe Flore

Macaroni and cheese Cafe Flore

Shell pasta baked in a creamy parmesan and white cheddar cheese sauce with cornbread crumble and chopped parsley topping. $6.50
Cafe Flore, San Francisco

Wow, this was good! Maybe it’s nostalgia, but I tend to like yellow mac and cheese the best. This version, however, made me forget about the color (hehe). It was nice and rich, and the crunchy topping added a great texture and even more flavor.  The medium sized shells held a lot of the yummy cheese sauce and were fun to play with! 🙂

Stuffed jalapenos – Hahn’s Hibachi

Stuffed jalapenos Hahn's Hibachi

Fresh jalapenos stuffed with marinated steak and tempura fried.  Garnished with parsley and served with soy based dipping sauce.  $9.95
Hahn’s Hibachi, San Francisco

Omg, I love this appetizer!  The combination of the salty beef stuffed inside the jalapeno, the hot crispy tempura outside, and the salty sour dipping sauce is absolutely delicious!  You get quite a few, which is good because $9.95 is a bit high for an appetizer at a casual place like this.  These are worth it!

Red sesame chicken steamed bun – Chairman Bao Truck

Red sesame chicken steamed bun Chairman Bao Truck

Served with pickled paper-thin cucumbers, spicy carrots, and chopped parsley. $3.25
Chairman Bao Truck, San Francisco

So I’m a big fan of The Chairman Bao truck and I’ve been slowly trying all the buns whenever I see the truck on my way home from the gym (great way to lose weight, right?).  Although the pork belly bun is still my favorite, this chicken bun was also very good.  It had great flavor and I love the thin cucumber slices.  The chicken was tender and they certainly put plenty of toppings on the bun.  Go Bao!

Sweet potato fries – Farmerbrown

Sweet potato fries Farmerbrown

Deep fried sweet potato wedges dusted with cayenne salt, topped with chopped parsley and served with garlic aioli.  $5 for happy hour
Farmerbrown, San Francisco

This was my favorite snack of the night!  They were cooked perfectly (not greasy at all) and they came out hot and fluffy.  The aioli was a great accompaniment for the slightly sweet fries.  I could eat another plate of these right now!

Rock shrimp tortellini – Firewood Cafe

Rock shrimp tortellini Firewood Cafe

Stuffed with fresh gulf rock shrimp, green onions, shallots and red bell peppers.  Served with Firewood sauce (mixture of marinara sauce and white wine cream sauce) and bread, topped with parsley and shaved parmesan cheese.  $9.95
Firewood Cafe, San Francisco

I’ll admit that I’ve had this dish more than a few times after hanging out at the surrounding bars all night, hehe!  I think it’s the Firewood sauce, a great mixture of marinara, wine, and cream) that hits just the right spots.  It’s a warm and homey dish – a perfect plate to satiate an after-bar appetite.  The tortellini always has a nice bite to them and the rock shrimp filling is delicious.

Lamb shawerma – Truly Mediterranean

Lamb Shawerma Truly Mediterranean

Thin marinated slices of lamb and beef, broiled tomatoes, parsley, seasoned onions, tahini sauce, hot sauce and wrapped in a grilled lavash.
Truly Mediterranean, San Francisco

The shawerma at Truly Mediterranean are SO big and SO yummy!  The meat is tender and flavorful, and I love the meaty broiled tomato wedges.  The seasonings they put on everything is so good, as is the tahini sauce.  I always agree to add the hot sauce, but it’s not very hot.  So for those who need the heat, don’t expect much.  Regardless, this wrap is very delicious and will definitely fill you up.  The guys at the 16th Street store are very friendly and helpful.  It’s a tiny shop with a stand up counter and a couple sidewalk tables.  I don’t go there for the ambiance, I go for the food!

Garlic dungeness crab – Anchor Oyster Bar

Garlic dungeness crab Anchor Oyster Bar

Pan roasted 1/2 dungeness crab with sliced garlic, sprigs of thyme, parsley, lemon and LOTS of butter.
Anchor Oyster Bar, San Francisco

This was actually a special they had that night, and I was in absolute heaven!  The crab was fresh and tasted amazing!  I squeezed most of the lemon onto the dish and it added even more flavor and brightened up the garlicky butter sauce.  It was no easy feat extracting all the flesh from the crab, but I did a pretty good job.  I didn’t want any of that soft, tender crab meat to go to waste.  As you will see, I don’t mind getting messy and eating with my hands – I am Filipino, lol!  This dish was so comforting and I used the table sourdough bread to soak up all the butter sauce.  Thank goodness I live in San Francisco.  We get our fair share of amazing crab!

Chardonnay Anchor Oyster Bar

Mezza Corona Chardonnay 2009, Italy

I didn’t like this white wine very much.  I rated it 3.3/10 on the Wine Notes app on my phone.  But dinner always tastes better with a glass of wine, mediocre or not…
