Bbq pork belly – 1760

Bbq pork belly - 1760
Cole slaw, purple potato salad, pickled red onion, carrot, pea shoot. $21
1760, San Francisco CA

This tasted good, but I think it was overpriced for the portion. I also think that the sour/tart flavors dominated the dish and I hoped for more luscious bbq flavors to rise through. The purple potato salad wasn’t my favorite thing either. I’ve had purple potato salad before but they had better flavor and texture than this one by 1760. Overall, I kinda think that this restaurant is overrated. There were more missteps than successes during this meal.

Sesame crusted tuna – Epic

Sesame crusted tuna - Epic
Served with a salad of greens, carrots, radish, and wasabi dressing. 480 PHP
Epic, Boracay PHILIPPINES

This tuna salad was really good! The tuna was fresh tasting and seared perfectly on the outside while the center was still pink and tender. I also liked the presentation with the height of the salad.

Weng-weng cocktail - Epic
Weng-weng cocktail. Pitcher 580 PHP
This cocktail was surprisingly delicious and strong! We asked if they could make it less sweet than normal, and they did a great job.

Pork and shrimp stir fried rice vermicelli – Nha Hang Ngon

Pork and shrimp stir fried rice vermicelli - Nha Hang Ngon
Bun gao xao tom thit. With carrots, cabbage, onion, green onion, cilantro. 120,000 VND
Nha Hang Ngon, Ho Chi Minh City VIETNAM

This was pretty good and I liked the slightly al dente texture of the vermicelli noodles. The pork was ok, but the shrimp were really tasty. Overall, it was good but I probably wouldn’t order it again.

Bbq pork – Hai Lua Food Countryside

Bbq pork - Hai Lua Food Countryside
Served with rice, tomato, carrot, cucumber, and sweet chili fish sauce. 62,000 VND
Hai Lua Food Countryside, Ho Chi Minh City VIETNAM

I’ve eaten a lot of Vietnamese grilled pork in my life and I’ll have to say that this was one of the best I’ve had. The pork was juicy and had SO much flavor, but wasn’t too salty like others I’ve tried. Noms!

Sizzling mixed seafood – Leslie’s Restaurant

Sizzling mixed seafood - Leslie's Restaurant
Mussels, crab, squid, and carrots in a sweet garlicky sauce. 449 PHP
Leslie’s Restaurant, Tagaytay PHILIPPINES

This wasn’t my favorite. There was too much sauce for it to be served in such a shallow dish, and the crab was really hard to eat and break apart when it was slick with sauce. The mussels were also on the dry, overcooked side. I wouldn’t order this again.

Chicken curry – Philippine Airlines

Chicken curry - Philippine Airlines
With rice, steamed vegetables, carrot and jicama salad, dinner roll, and red wine. Complimentary
Manila (MNL) to Ho Chi Minh City (SGN), Philippine Airlines

Meh, this dish wasn’t very good. The chicken curry tasted ok, but I didn’t like the verging-on-slimy texture of it. The carrot and jicama salad was different, and I think it had pieces of ham in it. It was decent. Thank god for free wine on international legs!

Imperial rolls – PPQ Beef Noodle House

Imperial rolls - PPQ Beef Noodle House
Cha gio. Crispy fried rolls with ground pork, taro, carrots, and silver noodles. Served with lettuce, mint leaves and cucumber with nuoc mam. $6.75
PPQ Beef Noodle House, San Francisco CA

We don’t order the fried Imperial rolls very often because they’re less healthy than the fresh spring rolls. They’re so much tastier and fun to eat (since you get to wrap them in all the greens) though! I’ve always like how the wrapper gets super crispy and hard and blistered. Noms!

Braised pork cheeks steamed bun – Little Uncle

Braised pork cheeks steamed bun - Little Uncle
Pickled vegetables, garlic chili paste. Each $3.30
Little Uncle, Seattle WA

Which is better, braised pork cheeks or pork belly? I’m not gonna choose between the two because they’re both delicious! These buns were super tasty and I loved the braising sauce. The pickled radish and carrot gave these morsels the perfect bite. Mmm…

Beef with oyster sauce – Tuk Tuk Noodle Bar

Beef with oyster sauce - Tuk Tuk Noodle Bar
Sauteed beef with mushroom, onion, bamboo shoot, carrot, and green onion. Set Menu A £11.80 per person
Tuk Tuk Noodle Bar, London ENGLAND

Ugh, another throw-away dish from Tuk Tuk. The beef quality was bad and the sauce was plain and boring. There was plenty to go around though!

Roast chicken with gravy – United Airlines

Roast chicken with gravy - United Airlines
Served with potatoes, carrots, green beans, side salad, dinner roll, and cream crackers.
London (LHR) to San Francisco (SFO), United Airlines

The chicken doesn’t look very appetizing, but it was actually palatable with the salty gravy on top. The carrots and beans were way overcooked and had the consistency of soft food for the elderly. I’m not a salad person so I just picked at a few lettuce leaves. This was another underwhelming dinner service from United Airlines. Please, let me fly first class next time!
