It started raining last night and has continued raining today! Not very hard though, more like a sprinkle. I’m from Seattle, I’m used to the real stuff!

Today is the eve of my Birthday Weekend! Yay!!! So for lunch I decided to treat myself to a lobster roll from We’re On a Roll. It’s a food stand in front of New England Lobster Company. I needed a little pick-me-from to combat the gloomy weather. It IS almost my birthday, you know. Hehe! This is the first time I’ve been to this stand, but I’m so glad they’re here. There’s nothing else nearby except fast food joint and mediocre sandwich shops. It’s nice to have a nicer alternative.

The office also surprised me with a birthday cake from Suzanne’s Cake & Pastry in Millbrae. And I have to admit that I was truly surprised – I wasn’t expecting it. That was super sweet!

At first I thought that this was a little overpriced. That’s a lot for lunch in South San Francisco! But you do get the side of coleslaw and chips, and there’s a lot of delicious lobster in that roll! They have the chopped vegetables in front of their lunch trailer so you can add as much or as little as you like.

They also have picnic tables nearby where you can eat your delicious roll, but since it was raining I ate mine in the car. Yum! I’d go back.

This dish was just ok. It lacked the depth of flavor that I look for in a delicious gumbo, and there could also have been more of the proteins present. It was more soupy than gumbo. You definitely get a lot of it though, and the price is very reasonable.

Finally made it to Criolla Kitchen! It was weird going into the old Bagdad Cafe space and experiencing a new restaurant. I think the spirit of Bagdad Cafe is still there somehow. Anyway, the food at Criolla was pretty good, but didn’t quite meet my expectations. I wanted to get blown away with flavor, I mean it’s suppose to be “soul food”, right? This particular dish was actually pretty tasty. The shrimp was tender and nicely cooked and the tomato sauce was flavorful. Other dishes like the gumbo could have had more of a kick.

The portion size of their lunch plates are ridiculous! All that food for only six dollars! The dish tasted pretty good too. They use large pieces of chicken breast and I love the whole mushrooms. Noms!

A great hearty soup with large chunks of steak, potatoes, celery and carrots.  This was their soup of the day so it’s not always be available, but I’m glad I got it since I was very hungry that day, hehe.  1/2 sandwich 1/2 soup combo, $5.95

Yet another amazing happy hour value at Hog & Rocks.!  I’m not suer that the chile and agave nectar sauce really stood out though.  It didn’t have a very defined flavor.  In fact, it tasted pretty light and mellow – if that’s possible with chicken wings.  You certainly get a lot of wings for five bucks, but in terms of flavor I don’t think I’ll be ordering these again (and they were cold!).

Wow, Beretta doesn’t skimp on the burrata cheese for this dish!  I personally love buratta.  The cream filled fresh mozzarella cheese acquires such a creamy, luscious texture.  It’s absolutely divine.  I’ve never had eggplant caponata before this, but I really enjoyed it.  The dish was very flavorful and the fresh vegetables, basil and pine nuts helped to brighten the fried eggplants.  There’s a lot going on here, but they all work.  The buratta is additional, but I highly recommend ordering it.  I don’t think I would have enjoyed this dish half as much sans the buratta!

This creamy Boston clam chowder has such amazing flavor! It’s not too thick, nor is it too runny. What I love about this chowder is it’s simplicity – the ingredients are the stars. You can taste all the vegetables, the clams, and the cream. Anchor Oyster Bar has always served straightforward food made with amazing ingredients. And I think that’s the key to their success. It’s a small restaurant and there’s always a wait for their delicious seafood, but don’t get discouraged, the tables somehow turn quickly.

This dish is even hotter than their Ma Po Tofu!  Perhaps it’s all the dried chili flakes that practically coat every piece in the dish.  But it is VERY delicious.  It has a wonderful smokiness and the variety in textures is absolutely fabulous.  Another go-to dish of mine from Mission Chinese Food.

This hearty soup tasted surprisingly light considering the amount of ingredients.  The trick to soups with this many vegetables is to cook them all to the same doneness.  Unfortunately, the carrots and white beans in this soup were mushy compared to the other vegetables.  However, it was still a nice, tasty soup for a warm summer day.
