Pan seared Alaskan halibut – Jardiniere

Pan seared Alaskan halibut - Jardiniere
Avocado, cherry tomato, basil. Tasting menu $140
Jardiniere, San Francisco CA

Mmm, another fabulous dish from Jardiniere. The halibut was cooked perfectly; it had a nice crust on the outside and the inside was soft and pillowy. The accompanying broth had so much flavor, and the avocado was a nice change of pace.

Vietnamese spring rolls – Hula’s Island Grill

Vietnamese spring rolls - Hula's Island Grill
Tofu, peanuts, apple, lemongrass, carrots, basil, lettuce. $5
Hula’s Island Grill, Santa Cruz CA

These rolls were pretty bland and lacked Vietnamese flavor. They needed some mint and fish sauce or something. You really had to dip the rolls in the sauces to get any flavor – kinda disappointing.

Monterey Bay calamari – Solaire Restaurant + Bar

Monterey Bay calamari - Solaire Restaurant + Bar
Flash fried, lemon chips and basil. $13
Solaire Restaurant + Bar, Santa Cruz CA

These were SO disgusting and I’m annoyed that a restaurant kitchen would actually send these out. The calamari was way overcooked to the point of being hard and super dry. They tasted like they were freezer burned before being fried; they definitely didn’t taste like they were made from fresh squid. This dish was overpriced for such poor quality. LAME!

Comme Ca, Las Vegas NV

Mmm, I loved the food at Comme Ca! We went during happy hour so the menu items at the bar and lounge were half off – score! This tart was very tasty and the ingredients were great.

Pho Big Bowl, Seattle WA

Soup additions - Pho Big Bowl
There’s something very comforting about pho. The rich beef broth is usually so flavorful and completely warms your body. Mix in a little heat, sour, and umami and you have a winning combination! Mmm.

Italica mussels – Frjtz

Italica mussels - Frjtz
One pound of fresh steamed mussels served with bread. Made with tomato-basil sauce with garlic, parsley, and red pepper flakes. $13
Frjtz, San Francisco CA

This had a lot of flavor, but was a tad on the salty side. I enjoyed that the mussels were large and meaty. They were nicely cooked so they were still tender and delicious!

Red wine and prosecco - Frjtz

Brunch cocktails – Chambers Eat + Drink

Spa collins cocktail - Chambers Eat + Drink

Spa collins: gin, basil, mint, cucumber, orange, citrus, ginger beer. $11
Chambers Eat and Drink, San Francisco CA

I loved brunch cocktails, especially when they’re expertly made. These cocktails were ok. The Spa Collins was on the tart side and the Bloody Mary was on the bland side. I did really enjoy the Lucky Lemonade though!

I really like the bruschetta at Pasta Pomodoro. It’s simple, fresh tasting and has lots of flavor! It’s also reasonably priced and easy to share.

Tutto mare – Boulevard Cafe

Tutto mare - Boulevard Cafe
Spaghetti, prawns, clams, mussels, fish, garlic, basil, white wine, red sauce. $15.95
Boulevard Cafe, Daly City CA

This restaurant is one of those places where the menu is gigantic and appears to contain food from all cuisines. Usually the food at these places are sorely lacking, but the things I ordered were actually pretty good. The tutto mare had plenty of seafood which I was surprised about since most places will skimp of the more expensive proteins. It had bold flavors and the pasta was perfectly al dente.

Avgolemono soup - Boulevard Cafe
Avgolemono soup. Traditional Greek soup with chicken, rice, lemon and egg. $2.95
This was OK. It was mostly broth.

Sweet basil chicken and minced basil chicken – Coriander Gourmet Thai

Sweet basil chicken and minced basil chicken - Coriander Gourmet Thai
2 item combo with sweet chicken and crispy basil and minced basil chicken with pad thai and steamed broccoli. $9.77
Coriander Gourmet Thai, San Francisco CA

Oh, mall food… We definitely have a love/hate relationship. I love that you’re so convenient but I hate that you’re usually of really bad quality and typically super salty. Coriander Gourmet Thai was decent and a pretty good value so I can’t complain too much.
