Ensalada de remolacha – Poquito

Ensalada de remolacha - Poquito
Ecuadorian beet salad with carrots, peas, bell pepper and cilantro. $5
Poquito, San Francisco CA

This was not what we expected when we saw it on the menu, but we really loved this salad! Everything tasted great together, even the peas which I was originally skeptical about.

Roasted baby beet salad – Trio Restaurant

Roasted baby beet salad - Trio Restaurant
Baby beets, mixed greens, pecans, blue cheese, citrus sections, balsamic vinaigrette. $9
Trio Restaurant, Palm Springs CA

You can’t really tell, but there are tiny pieces of roasted beets in there – I swear! That was another disappointing thing about this restaurant – if I’m ordering a beet salad, I think the beets should be a prominent component! Ugh!

David makes a pan-fried pork chop dinner!

Aw, I love it when David cooks dinner! I try and offer to do the dishes, but he’s such a putzer that he ends up doing them before I can get the chance. Hehe! This meal was lovely and a nice change of pace from eating out. As much as I love dining at restaurants, it’s the home cooked meals that I remember the most!

Brunch plate 3 – Wicked Spoon Buffet

Brunch plate 3 - Wicked Spoon Buffet
Roasted beet salad with citrus and goat cheese, home made Italian sausage, goat cheese ravioli with fried sage. Brunch buffet $22
Wicked Spoon Buffet, Las Vegas NV

This was definitely a heavy plate! The beet salad was delicious and the citrus wedges helped to lighten things up. The Italian sausage tasted great, but omg, it was super fatty. The ravioli wasn’t as tasty as it looked. It was too soft and mushy and drowning in butter.

Beet and halumi cheese salad – Cafe Mystique

Beet and halumi cheese salad - Cafe Mystique
Mixed greens, pine nuts, black, olives, balsamic vinaigrette. $8
Cafe Mystique, San Francisco CA

Halumi (halloumi) is a goat/sheep cheese from Cyprus. It’s hard-ish and dry and it was fried before being added to this tasty salad. The halumi was on the salty side so it was great to have the beets to balance it out. The salad was over-dressed, however. 😦

Native American "street performer", Union Square
Native American “street performer” near Union Square. Like any other touristy city, San Francisco has its share of “street performers” who do nothing more than dress up in various costumes and expect money in return. Not impressed. My favorite part of this pic is the guy in the back with the snowman cardigan, hilarious!

Hummus – Cafe Mystique

Hummus - Cafe Mystique
Blended chick peas (garbanzo beans) with olive oil, pine nuts, parsley, pickled beets, and sprinkled with sumac spice. Happy hour $2.95
Cafe Mystique, San Francisco CA

Wow, less than three bucks and SO delicious! What a value! The hummus was light and creamy, and the toppings added even more texture and flavor. Noms!

Chinatown, Grant Avenue

Chinatown, Grant Avenue. I don’t make it out to Chinatown very often because it’s out of the way and can be a total tourist trap, but there are so many cool stores and restaurants there. It’s great to live in a city that is so diverse!

Roasted beets – RN74

Roasted beets RN74

With butternut squash, quince, arugula, olio nuevo olive oil, chestnut vinaigrette. New Year four-course tasting menu $80
RN74, San Francisco

This was tasty! I love the combination of sweet, earthy beets and peppery arugula. The vinaigrette and diced toppings were also lovey.

Bread and butter RN74

Bread and butter with salt. I love real butter, SO good!

Farm egg scramble – Local Mission Eatery

Project 365: Day 31

Lazy morning today. Putz around at home with Silverfox then walked down to the Mission for coffee at Philz Coffee then brunch at Local Mission Eatery. Don’t have much more to do today, it’ll be relaxing. I won tickets to a showing of Best In Show at the Castro Theater later. That’ll be fun! A couple of the actors in the movie are doing a Q&A beforehand. Silverfox has never seen the movie, but I think he’ll get a kick out of it. Codes is also arriving this evening and I’m sure he’ll want to go out. Thank goodness it’s only Saturday, lol!

Farm egg scramble Local Mission Eatery

Soft scramble with red and yellow beets, sliced radishes, greens on top of what I think was a sunchoke puree. $11
Local Mission Eatery, San Francisco

This was super tasty! It wasn’t what I was expecting since the menus said that the scramble was gonna come with “brussels, sweet potatoes, goat gouda”, but I think that this combination turned out better. I LOVE beets and the whole plate tasted fresh and light. The eggs were cooked perfectly and I loved the composition of the plate with all the beautiful colors.

Beets and orange salad – Nopalito

Beets and orange salad Nopalito

“Ensalada de betabeles y naranja”. Salad of beets, orange, pickled onion, queso fresco, chile de arbol, chile guajillo and lime. $6
Nopalito, San Francisco

I have never seen this particular combination of ingredients.  It’s SO good!  I think the queso fresco and chile powders totally make the dish.  The plate is bright and vibrant and the beets are oranges taste amazing.  Perhaps the lime wedge is over kill though, there’s already enough acid fromt he oranges and pickled onions.

Sauteed scallops – Nombe

Sauteed scallops Nombe

With uni butter and baby beets. $15
Nombe, San Francisco

Omg, this was such a rich dish!  And perhaps, not in a good way.  The uni butter, while delicious, was SO heavy.  There’s not a lot of it on the plate, but it completely overpowered everything else.  To be fair the beets were delicious and the scallops were cooked well.

This dinner was very disappointing.  The service was horrendous and the timing between dishes was atrocious!  The food was just ok overall and not really worth the price.  I don’t think I’ll go back.

It was very dark in the restaurant and halfway through, they decided to turn the lights even lower.  Therefore, I wasn’t able to photograph everything but here are the remaining pics I was able to snap before it the darkness made it impossible to take more.

Kurobuta pork belly Nombe

Grilled Kurobuta pork belly, mizuna, jicama, yuzo kosho dressing. $10
This was the best dish of the night (although it’s very hard to see, lol).  The meat was tender, flavorful and perfectly cooked.  I also loved the mizuna salad on the side!

Persimmon cosmo Nombe

Persimmon cosmo shochu cocktail. $5 happy hour
This was ok.  I’m glad it was discounted for happy hour otherwise I would have been more disappointed.

Nipponito cocktail Nombe

Nipponito – mint, lime, rice shochu. $8
Very sour!

Chioggia beet salad – Bar Agricole

Chioggia beet salad Bar Agricole

Mixed lettuces with Chioggia beets, avocado, toast and a tarragon vinaigrette. $13
Bar Agricole, San Francisco

This dish was absolutely beautiful with the pinkish red beets, green lettuces and avocado, pale vinaigrette, and dark toast. I didn’t know what a Chioggia beet was, but apparently Chioggia is a coastal town near Venice and the beets have concentric white and pink stripes before they’re cooked. They tasted great! Not sure where the mixed lettuces were though. There was only one type of green, and it appeared to be some type of cress.
