Tacos al pastor – Taqueria El Mexicano

Tacos al pastor Taqueria El Mexicano
Spicy pork with onions, hot salsa, and cilantro on corn tortillas with lime and radishes. $1 each
Taqueria El Mexicano, South San Francisco CA

Mmm, I sometimes head to the Taqueria El Mexicano taco truck to in the afternoon when I start getting hunger pangs. The tacos are delicious and at only $1 each, they won’t break the bank. It seems that the truck near the corner of Utah Ave and South Airport Blvd changes, but the tacos are always good.

Shanghai lumpia – Baby’s Eatery and Palabok

Shanghai lumpia Baby's Eatery and Palabok
Crispy, deep fried lumpia filled with ground pork.

Shanghai lumpia Baby's Eatery and Palabok
These little suckers are SO addicting! I dare you to eat just one – I don’t think it’s possible. They aren’t the healthiest things to eat, but I absolutely love them. 🙂

Best in Show, SF Sketchfest 2012

Q&A with Fred Willard and Michael Hitchcock after a screening of “Best in Show” at the Castro Theater, SF Sketchfest 2012. Omg, these two were frickin’ hilarious! I loved hearing them talk about how they made the movie and researching their roles, lol!

Cuarto Sombras panini – Cafe Cuatro Sombras

Project 365: Day 111

I’m at SFO International Terminal A with Hubbs and waiting to board our Virgin Atlantic flight to LHR. Yippee! The flight is 9+ hours long so I’m gonna have plenty of movie-watching time. I’m SO glad it’s a direct flight. We arrive in London tomorrow morning but have to wait at the airport for our afternoon connection to Dublin on British Midland International. SO excited!

Cafe Cuatro Sombras panini
Black forest ham, lettuce, tomato, recao and cilantrillo mayo with a garlic and cheese spread on an olive oil bread. Served with potato chips. $7.50
Cafe Cuatro Sombras, Old San Juan, PUERTO RICO

Leave it to a cafe to deliver some of the better food we had in Old San Juan. This panini was delicious. Otherwise, San Juan was a food bust for the most part.

Iced lattes Cafe Cuatro Sombras
16 ounce iced latte. $3.75

Pork and amarillo dumplings – Dragonfly

Pork and amarillo dumplings Dragonfly
Steamed dumplings with citrus mojo. $14
Dragonfly, Old San Juan, PUERTO RICO

Ew, these were gross! The dumpling wrappers were thick, dry and chewy. It was difficult to taste the filling because the wrapper was SO starchy. Thank god for dipping sauces. I’m guessing amarillo refers to some type of yellow chili pepper.

Frozen pina colada

This was a frozen pina colada we had puchased from a stand in the Plaza de Armas right before Rick Santorum and his family paraded through for a campaign rally. It was surreal to see him randomly in Old San Juan!

Braised pulled pork – Waterfront Cafe

Braised pulled pork Waterfront Cafe
Pork meat and skin with okra cooked in a rich sauce, served with baguette slices. Part of “Tapas for Two” $64 (Barbados dollar)
Waterfront Cafe, Bridgetown, BARBADOS

Wow, this was pretty greasy. It was definitely packed with flavor, but the slabs on fatty skin in this stew-like dish gave off way too much fat.

St. John's Church ironwork
Beautiful painted ironwork inside St. John’s Church. This amazing old church is located on the eastern side of the island atop a cliff overlooking the nearby shoreline. Highly recommended to visit.

Sea island shrimp & Plantation pork – Waterfront Cafe

Sea island shrimp & Plantation pork
Cajun spiced and char-grilled shrimp with a ginger soy glaze. Ripe plantain stuffed with ground pork, capers and herbs, deep-fried and served with a tomato salsa. Part of “Tapas for Two” $64 (Barbados dollar)
Waterfront Cafe, Bridgetown, BARBADOS

Plantation pork Waterfront Cafe
Mmm, this was very good! The shrimp was surprisingly tender even with that amount of char on the outside. The fried pork balls were different, but very yummy. I don’t think I’ve even had something like it before. Both items were packed with flavor.

Captain Thomas Henry Sealy grave
Looking down in the grave of Captain Thomas Henry Sealy, located at the cemetery at St. John’s Church. Our taxi driver tour guide told us that we wanted to be buried standing up and facing the sea so he could remain on the lookout for approaching enemy ships. What a diva, lol!

Heritage porchetta – Locanda

Heritage porchetta Locanda

Arugula, fingerling potato, onion. $24
Locanda, San Francisco

Again, this dish was definitely on the salty side. But the pork was SO tender and flavorful that I almostforgave the saltiness of it. I surely couldn’t eat the entire thing without a few gallons of water. The pork was also VERY fatty. I love fatty cuts, but this was over the top. As a general theme, my meal at Locanda was salty.

Faux shark’s fin soup – Benu

Faux shark's fin soup Benu

With dungeness crab, Jinhua ham, and black truffle custard. Pre fixe dinner $180
Benu, San Francisco

I liked this. A bit on the tasty side (from the black truffle custard), but still flavorful. I don’t know what all the fuss is about shark’s fin (or faux shark’s fin in this case). It doesn’t taste like anything – it just has a cartilaginous texture. The Jinhua ham broth was rich and the dungeness crab helped to lighten it up. Good dish, but not my favorite.

Spicy pork stone pot rice – Mom’s Tofu House

Project 365: Day 98

This is the penultimate day of my work trip in Charleston, yay! I fly back to San Francisco tomorrow morning. I’ve suggested to my co-instructor that we have a final dinner together to celebrate the end of the course. I think I’ll take him to The Glass Onion. I’ve been there before and the food is great and reasonably priced. They also have a varied selection so I’m sure that he’ll find something that he likes.

It’s been great teaching with him. He’s definitely nice enough and easy to talk to. He was mostly a hotel hermit though, but I didn’t mind since that allowed me to use the rental car whenever I wanted. Hehe!

Bbq pork fried rice – Grand Palace Restaurant

Project 365: Day 96

Argh, it’s back to work and teaching. At least there’s only a few more days before I fly back to San Francisco. I hope a get good reviews, hehe. After my weekend of yummy, low country food I’ve been craving fried food again, lol! I guess when you’re surrounded by it, it’s difficult not to think about it. I think for dinner I’ll try some chicken fingers from Raising Cane’s. Chicken fingers aren’t anything special, but we don’t have this chain in the Bay Area (or California?) so I wanna give it a try. I think I’ll also grab dinner at Smokey Bones for some bbq. You think I’d be bbq’d out by now!

Bbq pork fried rice Grand Palace Restaurant

Fried rice with eggs, green onion, and bbq pork.  $7.50
Grand Palace Restaurant, South San Francisco CA

Meh, kinda dry and not very flavorful. I’ll pass on this next time.

Korean spare ribs – Wang’s in the Desert

Korean spare ribs Wang's in the Desert

4 pieces of bite size pork ribs braised in a soy bbq sauce. Served with tangy Korean cole slaw. $9
Wang’s in the Desert, Palm Springs CA

These were sticky, sweet, salty, and absolutely delicious! Among all the small plates we tried, this was the most substantial. I love pork ribs and these did not disappoint!
