Sweet and sour chicken – United Airlines

Sweet and sour chicken - United Airlines
Served with fried rcie, side salad with ranch dressing, dinner roll, butterscotch brownie.
San Francisco (SFO) to Paris (CDG), United Airlines

Ugh! I would say that this was a joke of Chinese food, but I’m pretty sure sweet and sour chicken is an American invention in the first place. I’m just gonna say that this was NOT good, yuck!

Open flame chicken meal – Goood Frikin’ Chicken

Open flame chicken meal - Goood Frikin' Chicken
Marinated over night in an herbal marinade, cooked slowly on open flame til tender and done. Served with macaroni and cheese, side salad, olive oil pita, and garlic dip. Half chicken $11.75
Goood Frikin’ Chicken, San Francisco CA

I love the marinade that they use for their chicken! It’s SO delicious and I end up devouring the entire chicken, skin and all. Actually, the skin is my favorite part, hehe. Although their mac and cheese isn’t oozy-gooey I still love it. It’s full of cheesy flavor and works well with the Mediterranean spices used on the rest of the food. And of course I could eat stacks of their pita and garlic dip. Noms!

Chongqing chicken – Mama Ji’s

Chongqing chicken - Mama Ji's
Pieces of chicken are fried first then cooked with chilies and Sichuan peppercorns. $10.95
Mama Ji’s, San Francisco CA

This small Castro restaurant is really quirky. It was opened by a husband/wife combo (Belgian? and Chinese) and the food is pretty good. I hear the Belgian beers are also really good. The service, however, was random and there were long stretches of unneeded waiting – NOT COOL!

This chicken dish was nice and spicy and I appreciated that the chicken pieces were large and recognizable as chicken instead of the heavily breaded alternatives. Some of the pieces were a little hard, dry and overcooked though. And please get those waitresses to move with purpose!

Eggplant with ground chicken – Little Saigon

Eggplant with ground chicken - Little Saigon
Com ca tim ga xao la hue. Onion, basil, garlic sauce over rice. $6.95
Little Saigon, South San Francisco CA

Mmm, even though this wasn’t the best quality and it was on the salty side I still love these flavor combinations. Actually, whether Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, or Japanese I uaually always like the eggplant dishes I order.

Green chile chicken pot pie – Chile Pies

Green chile chicken pot pie - Chile Pies
Homemade pie served with green chile gravy, vegetables, cheddar crust, side salad. $8
Chile Pies, San Francisco CA

Green chile chicken pot pie - Chile Pies
Hmm, this wasn’t as good as I remembered. Last time I had the red chile pot pie and while the filling was certainly more flavorful, it was the cheddar crust that had the most impact. The cheddar crust was thick and hearty and kept all the juices inside the pie. This time around, I’m not sure there was even any cheddar on the crust. It was thinner and even soggy on the inside. Definitely not what I wanted to find. 😦

Pollo alla diavola – Alicante

Pollo alla diavola - Alicante
Macadamia crusted chicken scaloppini, spicy tomato sauce, Spanish achovies, patatas bravas. $22 (apparently)
Alicante, Palm Springs CA

OK, this was LAME! We actually had ordered the veal marsala (and were charged for the veal marsala), but we were dining with friends and had a lot of food so by the time our entrees came around, we just went with the flow. The pollo alla diavola dish was decent, but I’m kinda mad that they still charged us for the veal which was $4 more. I don’t have much patience for dishonesty or carelessness.

Spicy chicken with ssam – K-pop

Spicy chicken with ssam - K-pop
Korean style marinated chicken mixed with onion, scallion, and sesame seeds served with vegetable wraps. $14.95
K-pop, San Francisco CA

Even though K-pop isn’t the best Korean food around and the food tends to be on the salty side, I still crave it once in a while because it’s the only Korean restaurant nearby. The flavors are great and the banchan selection is respectable, but they really need to dial the salt level down. They service is also hit or miss, but beggars can’t be choosers.

Pesto chicken pizza – Alicante

Pesto chicken pizza - Alicante
Free-range chicken, pesto, sundried tomato, feta, mozzarella on a gluten-free crust. $13
Alicante, Palm Springs CA

This pizza was pretty good, but I wasn’t sold on the gluten-free crust. It had a weird, hard texture that didn’t sit well with me. It didn’t have that airy, elastic quality that’s SO fulfilling about normal pizza crusts. I sometimes try to eat healthy, but I’ll probably stick to gluten-full pizza crusts, hehe.

Eggplant with chicken and shrimp – Jade Cafe

Eggplant with chicken and shrimp - Jade Cafe
Green onion and garlic in special sauce. $10
Jade Cafe, San Francisco CA

I think I just threw up a little bit in my mouth just thinking about this dish. The eggplant was mushy, the chicken and shrimp were overcooked and of poor quality, and there was about 2 cups of rancid oil in there! GROSS, this place serves disgusting food.

Hai nan chicken soup – Cafe Encore

Hai nan chicken soup - Cafe Encore
Lai fun noodle, bok choy, garlic, green onion. $7.50
Cafe Encore, Millbrae CA

Hai nan chicken soup - Cafe Encore
Mmm, this was REALLY good! The soup was super flavorful and the chicken was tender and delicious. I loved that they kept all the bones on since it lends so much more flavor. I not fussy, so I don’t mind eating around them. I’m craving this soup right now!

Salt and pepper chicken wings – Cafe Encore

Salt and pepper chicken wings - Cafe Encore
These were SO delicious probably because they douse them in MSG instead of salt (I’m just speculating, but I’m sure it’s true). I had ordered this to go so they weren’t as crispy as they could have been, but they somehow retained most of their crispiness and were pretty damn good! $5.50
