Pear and chocolate bread puddin’ – Arizmendi Bakery

Project 365: Day 29

I think I drank too much last night, lol! I was hurting this morning, but thank god I didn’t have to work until noon.

Last night we went to the Foodspotting Ball Ball held at their San Francisco office near the ballpark. We arrived a little early so we ducked into District to relax and grab a quick glass of wine. Brooklyn who I know from Cheer SF was working and took great care of us! We were only there quickly but he sat us at a reserved table and gave us great service. Thanks, Brooklyn! I’ve always liked that guy!

The Ball was ok. We talked to a few people and everyone seemed nice and were having a good time. There was free wine and beer and a few food items. I thought there would be more food though. They encouraged people to bring food items in the shape of balls but I only noticed I person who brought chocolate rice krispy balls. There may have been more people who brought stuff but I didn’t see them. Everybody seemed to be gathered around the Beretta table because they were serving their delicious dungeness crab arancinis with a calabrese aioli. Noms! Every time they would bring out a freshly fried batch, the crowd with greedily swoop in and leave the table barren once again. I’ll admit I had a couple of them. They were the only thing substantial to eat anyway.

Afterward, under the influence of wine, I had the great idea of going to Badlands for another drink. Bad move! We followed that with another drink at The Edge, then headed home and crawled into bed. Ahhh…

Pear chocolate bread pudding Arizmendi Bakery

Bread pudding with pear, chocolate, bread flour, eggs, buttermilk, cream, sugar, cinnamon, brown sugar, butter, dried fruit, yeast, sea salt, and pecans. $2.75
Arizmendi Bakery, San Francisco

Noms! SO good, Arizmendi and getting back on my nommy list! I think there is coconut in this bread pudding too. I skipped the gym this morning because I wasn’t feeling so hot, and of course I ate crap all morning. On my way to Bart I went to Arizmendi and grabbed this bread pudding. Never had it before but it’s pretty darn tasty!

Large chunks of chocolate and pear cover the top of the bread pudding.

Probably not the healthiest thing for you, but it’s worth the calories (and fat, lol)!

Cracked Dungeness crab – Swan Oyster Depot

Cracked 1/2 Dungeness crab Swan Oyster Depot

Large portion of half crab served with bread and butter and your choice of cocktail sauce, Louie sauce, or butter for dipping. $17.95
Swan Oyster Depot, San Francisco

This place is crazy popular! I arrived before noon on a Thursday and there was already a line out the door! There’s limited seating inside, only stools at the singular counter so you must wait until a seat becomes available. I wouldn’t recommend going here with a large group because you might be waiting a long time! The wait is definitely worth the wait for the freshest seafood and great service. The guys behind the counter are super friendly and the place just has a very cool, old-school vibe.

The dungeness crab was delicious! They do a great job cracking the shells so it’s fairly easy to remove all the yummy flesh. I ordered mine with cocktail sauce but next time I’ll try the Louie sauce. That would complete the decadent meal, hehe!

Sourdough bread Swan Oyster Depot

Sourdough bread and butter. Complimentary.

Fried shrimp po’boy – Brenda’s French Soul Food

Fried shrimp po' boy Brenda's French Soul Food

Cornmeal fried shrimp with lettuce, tomatoes and chipotle remoulade on a toasted French roll. Served with coleslaw and pickled watermelon. $9.75
Brenda’s French Soul Food, San Francisco

This sandwich was SO good! The shrimp were cooked perfectly and the chipotle remoulade tasted amazing. You can put that sauce over anything and it would taste good. This meal was very rich and fattening but it’s nice for an occasional treat. I definitely wouldn’t be eating this every day!

The restaurant is super popular so if you’re going during lunch, you better arrive early otherwise you’ll be waiting for a while. They’ve expanded their dining room but every table gets filled. I had to sit at the front counter the last time I went. I don’t mind that sort of thing, especially for lunch and the people next to me were friendly enough and unobtrusive.

Coleslaw Brenda's French Soul Food

Coleslaw of cabbage, carrots and red cabbage. Love that it’s not so mayonnaise! It’s nice and on the lighter side.

Pickled watermelon rinds Brenda's French Soul Food

Pickled watermelon rinds. Yummy!

Watermelon tea Brenda's French Soul Food

Sweet watermelon house tea. $2.25
So frickin’ refreshing!

Warm egg salad sandwich – Il Cane Rosso

Warm egg salad sandwich Il Cane Rosso

Petaluma Farm egg salad, anchovy garlic butter, aged provolone cheese, greens. $9
Il Cane Rosso, San Francisco

This was REALLY good! And huge! I could barely eat it all but I didn’t want any of it to go to waste. The eggs were good perfectly, soft and creamy. The anchovy garlic butter put it over the top – SO nommy! I also loved the simple salad that helped to cut the richness of the egg salad.

Warm egg salad sandwich Il Cane Rosso

Definitely worth tackling the crazy tourists at the Ferry Building, hehe!

Flowers Il Cane Rosso

Roses on the table with my order number. It was cold outside that day, brr!

Roasted pork banh mi – Saigon Sandwich

Project 365: Day 19

I wasn’t feeling well this morning so I stayed in bed for most of the morning, then drove to the Little Saigon area in the Tenderloin to grab some banh mi. They were SO good. I proceeded to catch up of DVR all day and just generally relax so I could start feeling better. The last thing I need is to get sick right now. I need to remain healthy so I can get in great shape for the cruise, lol!

That and T-Head is taking me to Locanda tonight for a late birthday dinner. I’ve been wanting to try that place, but I know that it’s one of those super dark restaurants that you can barely see what your eating. I’ve mentioned this before, but I hate that! Isn’t part of enjoying your food is being able to see it! I ate at Bar Tartine which is near Locanda and that place was almost pitch black, argh! At least the food at Locanda should be very good. That’s what the reviews say anyway. I’ll be the judge of that!

Roasted pork banh me Saigon Sandwich

Vietnamese sandwich with sliced roast pork, pickled carrots and onions, jalapenos, cilantro and mayonnaise on a toasted roll. $3.50
Saigon Sandwich, San Francisco

I can understand why this is on the 7×7 Big Eat SF list. It’s super tasty and ONLY $3.50. I wasn’t too hungry but it’s a decent sized sandwich and I couldn’t finish it. The pork was very tender and flavorful and all the pickled vegetables, jalapenos and cilantro stuffed inside made it a very hearty meal. A winner!

Jalapeno cheese focaccia – Liguria Bakery

Jalapeno cheese foccacia Liguria Bakery

A large slab of addictive focaccia bread topped with jalapenos and cheese. $5
Liguria Bakery, San Francisco

This was the best focaccia I’ve EVER tasted, no joke! It has an amazing texture and it’s SO amazingly buttery. Even though this was my second choice, I’m glad that I ordered the jalapeno cheese flavor. It had a great flavor and had a little bit of heat which I wasn’t expecting from a focaccia!

I’ll still sing the praises of this bread even though my store experience wasn’t all that great. I arrived around 1:15pm on a random Thursday. The old lady at the counter must have been cranky because it was nearing the end of her shift. I patiently wait for her to finish with the customer in front of me, then she glares at me and asks “What do you want!?” I ask for some of the black olive focaccia. She responds, “We’re out” and continues staring at me. I was a bit taken aback, but decide to forge on. I’ve decided that she’s not going to give me any more information so I ask, “Well what do you have left?” She grudgingly tells me and I decide on the jalapeno cheese. Omg, how ruuuuuude! How about some customer service here? I was waiting for her to completely roll her eyes at me as it could’ve happened easily.

Anyway, I get home with the focaccia and I’m blown away! The piece was big enough to into six pieces which I continue to hoard for the next few days. It even tasted great when reheated in the oven! I’ll definitely go back (but when I’m up for that lady’s look of death)!

Bone marrow canoe – The Monk’s Kettle

Bone marrow canoe Monk's Kettle

Served with diced pears(?), toast and mixed greens. $9
The Monk’s Kettle, San Francisco

Such a rich and decadent treat! This hit the spot and it tasted great with the Duvel beer. I loved the simple and cute presentation. The menu said that this was served with lemon, but I think it was actually diced pears on top. It was definitely a soft, sweet fruit. Regardless, everything tasted great together!

Old school pretzel knot – The Monk’s Kettle

Old school pretzel knot Monk's Kettle

Served with a cheddar fondue and house mustard. $4.5
The Monk’s Kettle, San Francisco

A simple and elegant bar snack! It’s fun to eat and tastes great with beer. This was more light and bready than I imagined that it would be when I ordered it, but I really liked it. The cheese and mustard dipping sauces were also very tasty.

Halfway done!

Japanese deer tartare – Benu

Project 365: Day 17

Had a busy day-before-my-birthday day! Woke up with my lovey, stayed in bed and randomly caught a Streetfighter movie on TV (Legend of Chun Li or something like that, lol), went to the gym, got my hair did, had lunch downtown, picked up my wool and seersucker blazers from the tailor, did computer stuff, then had an AMAZING birthday dinner at Benu!

The dinner had 17 courses and lasted 3.5 hours! That’s pretty good if you ask me. I once had a pre fixe dinner in the Jewel Box at Mistral Kitchen in Seattle that lasted almost 4 hours, too. I honestly LOVE long dinners. They’re super relaxing and the food is almost always spectacular at these nice establishments. I thoroughly enjoyed this year’s birthday dinner. The food was SO delicious and the service was impeccable. (Anybody want to hit up French Laundry next?)

Afterward went to the Castro for some drinks but I didn’t last very long. I was SO frickin’ full and could barely move.

Can’t wait for brunch with T-Head and RSL tomorrow, then getting trashed with even more friends at Badlands!

Japanese deer tartare Benu

Served with artichoke mayonnaise and walnut bread. Pre fixe dinner $180
Benu, San Francisco

When I saw this dish on the menu, I was very intrigued. I’ve had venison before, but never as a tartare. The deer had a surprisingly clean flavor. I expected it be very gamey, dark and tough, but it tasted pretty neutral. Most of the flavor from this dish came from the artichoke mayonnaise, walnut bread, and whatever the freeze dried crumbles were on the plate.

Japanese deer tartare Benu

All the plates duirng dinner were beautiful! They were small poritons, but after 17 courses I was stuffed. The plates looked simple at a glanced but they had a lot of different components.

I’ll post the rest of the dishes soon!

Walnut bread Benu

Walnut bread. Even the bread was fantastic!

Dom Perignon champagne 1993

Moet e Chandon a Epernay, Champagne, Cuvee Dom Perignon, 1993. $40 corkage
Silverfox had this bottle of champagne laying around and he decided to pop the cork for my birthday dinner, aww! That’s a good thing because Benu had bottles of Dom Perignon 1996 and 1995 for $750 and $957, respectively. Ouch! We got away with only paying corkage.

The boxed bottle of champagne is just asking to be opened!

Corey Lee signed menu

Menu signed by chef Corey Lee. This was a cute surprise at the end of the meal. We had menus at our table the entire time to keep up with what we were eating, but those were taken away at the end and replaced with a couple signed menus.

Lobster roll – We’re On A Roll

Project 365: Day 16

It started raining last night and has continued raining today! Not very hard though, more like a sprinkle. I’m from Seattle, I’m used to the real stuff!

Today is the eve of my Birthday Weekend! Yay!!! So for lunch I decided to treat myself to a lobster roll from We’re On a Roll. It’s a food stand in front of New England Lobster Company. I needed a little pick-me-from to combat the gloomy weather. It IS almost my birthday, you know. Hehe! This is the first time I’ve been to this stand, but I’m so glad they’re here. There’s nothing else nearby except fast food joint and mediocre sandwich shops. It’s nice to have a nicer alternative.

The office also surprised me with a birthday cake from Suzanne’s Cake & Pastry in Millbrae. And I have to admit that I was truly surprised – I wasn’t expecting it. That was super sweet!

Lobster roll We're On A Roll

Cooked lobster stuffed in a warm split-top, buttered roll, topped with chopped red onions, celery and bell peppers. Served with homemade coleslaw and Tim’s Cascade poato chips. $15.50
We’re On A Roll, South San Francisco CA

At first I thought that this was a little overpriced. That’s a lot for lunch in South San Francisco! But you do get the side of coleslaw and chips, and there’s a lot of delicious lobster in that roll! They have the chopped vegetables in front of their lunch trailer so you can add as much or as little as you like.

Lobster roll We're On A Roll

They also have picnic tables nearby where you can eat your delicious roll, but since it was raining I ate mine in the car. Yum! I’d go back.

Smoked salmon frittata – La Boulange de Noe

Project 365: Day 15

These days before my birthday weekend are DRAGGING by! It’s painful, hehe.

Omg! Hubbs and I booked our flights to Dublin and London last night! I’m SO excited. We’re meeting Kryan and D-Dubbs in Ireland to celebrate Kry’s birthday, then heading to London to visit our friend D. Did I mention how excited it am?!?! The airfare did cost a pretty penny so I’m feeling a bit poor right now. Not the way to be when you have dinner at Benu coming up. Lol! So I’m gonna have a pretty busy Spring in terms of travel. I have a Caribbean cruise, a Europe trip, Las Vegas trip, and a possible trip to Ohio for a friend’s birthday. This is the most I’ll be travelling in a while! Heck yeah!

Smoked salmon quiche La Boulange de Noe

Egg frittata with asparagus, potatoes and tomatoes with smoked salmon and lemon wedge on top. Served with creme fraiche, mixed greens and toast. $6.75
La Boulange de Noe, San Francisco

I stopped by La Boulange on the way home from the gym this morning and ordered what I thought was going to be a small snack because I was starving yet again. It ended up being an entire plate of food which I couldn’t finish. Gotta love breakfast at La Boulange though! The food is consistently good and super cheap. You get all this for $6.75! The frittata was a little overdone but it still tasted great. It was filled with lots of vegetables and topped with plenty of smoked salmon. The salad was good but overdressed.
