Almond croissant – Boudin Bakery and Cafe

Almond croissant - Boudin Bakery and Cafe
I like that the pastries at Boudin are larger than those from other bakeries, and they’re actually really tasty too! This flaky croissant had plenty of delicious almond paste inside and toasted almonds on top. $2.49

Goddess salad – Little Star Pizza

Goddess salad - Little Star Pizza
Baby gems with a creamy pesto dressing, topped with chives and toasted almonds.  Small $8
Little Star Pizza, San Francisco CA

I’m not a big salad guy (I like to eat meat), but this goddess salad was delicious. The simple combination of the pesto dressing and toasted almonds on top of the large, crisp gem lettuce was perfect. And the small order was perfect for two people. Yum!

Prawns with green beans – Radio Africa & Kitchen

Prawns with green beans - Radio Africa & Kitchen
Almonds and berbere (spice mixture). Pre fixe menu
Radio Africa & Kitchen, San Francisco CA

I really liked these prawns – they had a lot of flavor. They were probably on the verge of being overcooked so they could have been a bit more tender, but I still liked the dish overall.

Spinach pizza – Mozzeria

Spinach pizza - Mozzeria
Almonds and red onions. Pre fixe menu
Mozzeria, San Francisco CA

I’m all for pizzas not having sauce, but this wasn’t very good. It was super dry and sad. The only thing providing any juicy element were the few strands of caramelized red onions because even the spinach had dried out from baking. The dough was also a little too thick to have it without sauce, and the warm toasted almonds dried out your mouth even more. I’d say this pizza was a FAIL.

Floating island – Alamo Square Seafood Grill

Floating island - Alamo Square Seafood Grill
Meringue, creme anglaise (vanilla custard), toasted almonds, caramel sauce, strawberry and mint garnish. Daily 3-course prix fixe $14.50
Alamo Square Seafood Grill, San Francisco CA

This was a very simple, light and elegant dish and it tasted really good! I don’t think I’ve ever had this before but I can see that it’s a great cost effective way to put out a delicious dessert. You really need the toasted almonds and caramel sauce to elevate it though. Noms!

Crispy apple turnovers – L’Epigramme

Crispy apple turnovers - L'Epigramme
Croustillant de pomme au caramel. Feuille de brick, apples, caramel sauce, toasted almonds, powdered sugar. Entree/Plat/Dessert option 28€
L’Epigramme, Paris FR

This was a perfect ending to a perfect meal! It was quite large so I’m glad we only had this one dessert and could share. I enjoyed that the pastry wasn’t overly sweet and that you could wipe up the rich, dark caramel sauce to your liking. The puff pastry was wonderfully thin and crispy and the apple filling was warm and delicious. Thank you L’Epigramme!

Artisan cheese – The Alembic

Artisan cheese - The Alembic
With marcona almonds and assorted bread. $4
The Alembic, San Francisco CA

The waitress, after confirming with the kitchen, told us that this was a Camilla soft goat cheese. We were VERY skeptical because it had the flavor and texture of a cow’s milk soft cheese like brie. There is no way in my mind that this was a goat cheese. I tried Googling the brand/variety afterward and came up with nothing comparable. I hate
it when you’re given false information at restaurants!

Huckleberry and peach crostata – Staple & Fancy

Huckleberry and peach crostata - Staple & Fancy
Vanilla ice cream and almonds. Family style supper $46 per person
Staple and Fancy, Seattle WA

I’m not a fan of super sweet desserts, but this was on the other end of the spectrum. It was bland and the dough was thick and undercooked. Perhaps this is why I rarely order desserts. Unfortunate since the rest of the meal was delicious up to this point. 😦

This salad was pretty tasty! I especially loved the little fried goat cheese balls – they were delicious. The salad had lots of great ingredients and they all tasted great together.
