Bbq pork – Tai Wu Mr. Fong’s Restaurant

Bbq pork - Tai Wu Mr. Fong's Restaurant
This was different. I guess I’ve never had a large plate of cold, sticky (slimey?) bbq pork for dim sum before. Usually it’s at least warm, but it was the sticky texture that put me off.

Cornmeal crusted fish tacos – Starbelly

Cornmeal crusted fish tacos - Starbelly
House pickled jalapeno and radicchio slaw, mixed greens salad with goat cheese and tomatoes, pickled jalapenos, limes. $9
Starbelly, San Francisco CA

I loved the texture of the fish, but they were difficult to taste among all the other ingredients. They were nicely cooked though and not greasy at all. The salad was actually my favorite part. The tomatoes and goat cheese were delicious!

Dahlia flowers (Dahlia sp., Asteraceae)
Yellow, magenta and peach dahlia flowers (Dahlia sp., Asteraceae), Noe Street. Not many houses in my neighborhood have front yards, and while this one is just a small strip of grass, I like that they’ve planted these bright dahlias.

Har gow – Tai Wu Mr. Fong’s Restaurant

Har gow - Tai Wu Mr. Fong's Restaurant
Shrimp dumplings. These were nice and large and the wrapper wasn’t too thick, noms! $4.50
Tai Wu Mr. Fong’s Restaurant, Daly City CA

Random building with graffiti, Sweeney Ridge Trail
Random building (old lookout?) covered with graffiti, Sweeney Ridge Trail. By the time we walked to this point, the sun was blazing so we wimped out and walked back down. Since the trail is completely exposed it’s uncomfortable to walk on really HOT days.

Grapefruit Splash cocktail – Starbelly

Grapefruit Splash cocktail - Starbelly

Carpano Antica sweet vermouth, fresh grapefruit juice, prosecco. $9
Starbelly, San Francisco CA

There’s nothing better than a well-made breakfast cocktail! This had great flavor and was bright and sparkly to ease you into the morning.

Tree shadows on orange wall, Edison Elementary School. I was walking to the gym one morning and was struck by the beautiful colors!

Chicken feet in black bean sauce – Tai Wu Mr. Fong’s Restaurant

Chicken feet in black bean sauce - Tai Wu Mr. Fong's Restaurant
David wouldn’t eat any of these, so I was left with the chore. I guess I thought that I liked chicken feet from childhood, but maybe I was wrong. These were a hard to eat and too sweet and mushy for my taste. They were all skin and bones and I couldn’t finish them. Perhaps if they were piping hot I could have conquered, hehe! $3.60

Globe Lily or Fairy Lantern (Calochortus albus, Liliaceae)
White flowers of the Globe Lily or Fairy Lantern (Calochortus albus, Liliaceae). These looked like they were on their way out, but I was glad to have caught them before the season was over.

Shrimp noodle rolls – Tai Wu Mr. Fong’s Restaurant

Thick rice noodles filled with shrimp and served with sweet soy sauce. These are yummy! $4.50

Siu mai – Tai Wu Mr. Fong’s Restaurant

Siu mai - Tai Wu Mr. Fong's Restaurant
Pork dumplings. These are a standard dim sum offering and I always seem to order them as a comparative measure. These weren’t too fatty and were of better quality than some other dim sum places.

Indian paintbrush (Castilleja sp., Orobanchaceae)
Orange Indian paintbrush flowers (Castilleja sp., Orobanchaceae). We walked some hill trails near the restaurant and were treated to some spectacular wildflowers!

Egg sandwich – Mission Beach Cafe

Egg sandwich - Mission Beach Cafe
Roasted tomato, caramelized onion, aged cheddar, garlic aioli and arugula on toasted English muffin, yukon gold potatoes. $9
Mission Beach Cafe, San Francisco CA

This sandwich may look small and normal, but the ingredients were super rich that it made the sandwich filling enough for one person. Because I had also ordered a side of biscuits and gravy, I couldn’t finish the sandwich by myself. The melted aged cheddar over the roasted tomato and caramelized onions was particularly delicious.

Combination seafood with spicy basil – Thai House Express

Combination seafood with spicy basil - Thai House Express
Sauteed shrimp, squid, and scallop with onions, chili, carrot, bell pepper and basil leaves. A la carte $13.95
Thai House Express, San Francisco CA

I like the flavors in there, but the squid was a bit overcooked so it was tough to chew. The service also tends to be inconsistent. It ranges from the most attentive service to having to flag down the waiter depending on the night.

Salvia "Hot Lips" (Salvia microphylla, Lamiaceae)
Salvia “Hot Lips” (Salvia microphylla, Lamiaceae). I love the vibrant red and white flowers of this plant (Baby sage, Graham’s sage, Blackcurrant sage).

Dungeness crab and bay shrimp benedict – Mission Beach Cafe

Dungeness crab and bay shrimp benedict - Mission Beach Cafe
Two poached eyes, guacamole and citrus hollandaise on toasted English muffins, yukon gold potatoes. $15
Mission Beach Cafe, San Francisco CA

I’d say the best parts of this dish were the citrus hollandaise and potatoes. Sadly, the small pieces of seafood got lost in the guacamole, hollandaise and runny egg yolk.

Crazy eyed lion statue, Noe Street

Crazy eyed lion statue, Noe Street. This is a pretty popular lion statue found in front of many homes in San Francisco, but this house added funny eyeballs to theirs, hehe.
