Beef panang curry – Thai House Express

Beef panang curry - Thai House Express
Beef in medium red curry sauce (coconut milk based) and fresh basil. A la carte $10.95
Thai House Express, San Francisco CA

I really like the panang curry at Thai House Express. It has a wonderfully rich flavor and the beef is almost always juicy and tender. I did have it once when the beef was dry and stringy, ew. I once had a visitor from Thailand and I took him here. He ordered everything in Thai and requested that the dishes be prepared “Thai spicy”. Omg, I could barely eat anything! It was SO spicy. That just reinforces the fact that “American spicy” isn’t really spicy at all. But I will say that even when I was traveling in the outer provinces of Thailand, they didn’t prepare food as spicy as Thai House Express that night.

Mmm, these things were definitely huge and gave me quite the buzz after brunch was over. Gotta love Sunday Fundays!

BBQ beef, short ribs, and chicken with 2 scoops of rice and macaroni salad. $8.75
L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, Millbrae CA

BBQ mix plate - L&L Hawaiian Barbecue
I always crave this once in a while, and I’m always inevitably disappointed. My mouth starts to tingle from all the salt and fat and I’m left feeling bloated. So why do I torture myself? Who knows, but I keep going back. I do love their macaroni salad – it’s delicious!

Smokehouse baby back ribs – Brookwood Farms BBQ

Smokehouse baby back ribs - Brookwood Farms BBQ
With macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, cornbread, and a fried pickle. $11.99
Brookwood Farms BBQ, Charlotte/Douglas International Airport (CLT)

Again, wow! The restaurants at CLT sure know how to pack your plate at really good values. Twelve bucks wouldn’t get you much at most airports, but this was a whole lotta food! I loved the mac ‘n cheese, and the ribs tasted decent but they had an odd texture. Everything together was maybe a little too salty for my taste.

Breakfast plate – The Lowcountry Grill

Untitled
Scrambled eggs, three bacon strips, and “All the way” hashbrowns topped with ham, onions, green bell peppers and cheese. $7.79
The Lowcountry Grill, Charleston International Airport (CHS)

I was hungover from the night before so I thought that this large, greasy breakfast plate would do me good but it made me feel even worse, lol! It’s nothing against the food because it was exactly what I expected – a basic, no-frills plate. It tasted a little bland, and there was so much of it! The food ended up being too rich and fatty for my tummy. 😦

Blackberry cheesecake – 17 North Roadside Kitchen

Blackberry cheesecake - 17 North Roadside Kitchen
Because the lights had gone out in the restaurant midway through dinner, the place was pretty dark by the end of our meal so a co-worker offered his cell phone light so I could take a photo of dessert, lol! Take my word that there is a blackberry sauce underneath that’s obscured by the shadow. The cheesecake was ok, but was more crumbly than I like. Three course dinner $30

Smoked duck – 17 North Roadside Kitchen

Smoked duck - 17 North Roadside Kitchen
Cherry wood smoked duck breast, white stone grits, spinach, peach gastrique. Three course dinner $30
17 North Roadside Kitchen, Mount Pleasant SC

Mmm, this dish was SO delicious! The duck was cooked perfectly and had a yummy smoked flavor. And how can you resist peaches when you’re in South Carolina? I don’t think it’s possible. This plate had some of my favorites things so it was definitely a success!

Confit pork cheeks – Social Wine Bar

Confit pork cheeks - Social Wine Bar
Smoked pecans, mushrooms, polenta, blackberry jus. $15
Social Wine Bar, Charleston SC

Mmm, this was a very tasty dish! The pork cheeks were super tender and flavorful and I enjoyed all the different components on the plate. The sweet blackberry jus tasted great with the hearty protein, and the pecans added some crunch against the creamy polenta. I also loved the presentation!

Strings of lights, Mad River Bar. Perhaps I had too much to drink and my vision had become blurry, hehe! 🙂

Cilantro lime martini – 17 North Roadside Kitchen

Cilantro lime martini - 17 North Roadside Kitchen
Absolut citron, triple sec, fresh lime, cilantro. $8
17 North Roadside Kitchen, Mount Pleasant SC

This cocktail was great and had a nice cilantro flavor, but not overpowering. Halfway through dinner, the power went out in the restaurant so we were dining by candlelight alone. We actually didn’t mind because we were having a great time talking and joking about work. The other thing that struck me about this dinner, was that the waiter totally looked like an ex on mine – weird!

Russet potato chips – Social Wine Bar

Russet potato chips - Social Wine Bar
Blue cheese fondue and scallions. $6
Social Wine Bar, Charleston SC

This was a really tasty snack to share. The potato chips may have been a bit on the greasy side but the fondue was SO yummy and I liked that they also put bleu cheese crumbles on top. Noms!

Pan seared scallops – 17 North Roadside Kitchen

Pan seared scallops - 17 North Roadside Kitchen
Local quail eggs, sweet corn puree, asparagus crudo. Three course dinner $30
17 North Roadside Kitchen, Mount Pleasant SC

This dish was SO cute! I loved how they topped each scallop with a tiny quail egg. The scallops were perfectly cooked and everything tasted amazing. I did think that some of the raw asparagus shavings looked clunky and unappetizing.

Cheese and herb biscuit - 17 North Roadside Kitchen
Cheese and herb biscuit with honey butter. Complimentary
These warm, savory biscuits were oh so delicious and addictive. I had to stop eating them to save room for dinner, hehe!
