Steak and prawns – Zapata Mexican Grill

Steak and prawns - Zapata Mexican Grill
Grilled steak, prawns, rice, black beans, guacamole, salad, salsa and 4 corn tortillas. $13.50
Zapata Mexican Grill, San Francisco CA

I was pleasantly surprised by this plate – I thought it was going ot suck! The prawns were acutally really good though. They were large, juicy and tender. The grilled steak could have been more tender and less salty, but it still tasted great with everything else. And of course, they make sure to pack the plate! 🙂

Pollo asado super nachos – Zapata Mexican Grill

Pollo asado super nachos - Zapata Mexican Grill
Grilled chicken, black beans, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, and salsa. $8.75

Gut bomb alert! But super nachos are one of my many guilty pleasures. Granted I don’t order this often, but they are especially delicious after a night of partying, lol!

5 color sushi bowl – Island Gourmet Markets

5 color sushi bowl - Island Gourmet Markets
Ahi, salmon, yellowtail?, imitation crab, spicy tuna, avocado, shiso, pickled ginger, wasabi. $6.85
Island Gourmet Markets, Waikoloa HI

I’m amazed at how much better the grocery store sushi is in Hawaii than in California. And it’s cheaper! We’re getting robbed on the mainland!

Waipi’o stack breakfast – Island Lava Java

Waipi'o stack breakfast - Island Lava Java
Two eggs over easy, stacked on house-made wheat toast with applewood smoked bacon, fresh avocado, tomato, arugula and chipotle aioli. Served with a cup of fresh fruit. $11.95
Island Lava Java, Kailua-Kona HI

This was SO nommy! The bacon was perfect and I loved the chipotle aioli. Even their homemade wheat bread was tasty. I wish the eggs were less fried (they were advertised as over easy) because I love a super-runny yolk but that’s only a minor criticism. Noms!

Waipi'o Valley
We actually drove to Waipio Valley on the north side of the Big Island and it was beautiful and impressive! Although the breakfast stack was delicious, I think the Valley takes the cake. 😉

Roasted veggie omelette – Island Lava Java

Roasted veggie omelette - Island Lava Java
A generous whole-egg omelette filled with roasted veggies, Big Island goat cheese, macadamia nut pesto, avocado and parmesan cheese. Served with fresh fruit. $13.25
Island Lava Java, Kailua-Kona HI

Mmm, this omeltte was great and the ingredients were very tasty. I loved the macadamia nut pesto and the large portion. And orchid blossoms in your fruit are always a nice touch! 🙂

Iced Kona coffee - Island Lava Java

100% extra fancy Kona coffee, full city roast, over ice. $3.25

Local musician
We sat outside where they had a local musician serenading us with some Hawaiian flare. He was actually really good and we tipped him accordingly.

Times Square sandwich – Giovanni Pastrami

Times Square sandwich - Giovanni Pastrami
Double Decker! 1/2 pound of gourmet bacon and turkey breast with avocado, tomato, lettuce, and mayonnaise on toasted sourdough. Served with macaroni salad. $16
Giovanni Pastrami, Honolulu HI

Another gigantic sandwich from Giovanni Pastrami. This one was less creative with the ingredients, but it still hit the stop. Actually, it more than hit the spot – it sat in my stomach for a long while afterward, hehe.

Royce’s spicy nachos – Giovanni Pastrami

Royce's spicy nachos - Giovanni Pastrami
A giant plate of homemade tortilla chips covered in a pepper jack cheese sauce, spicy taco-seasoned natural black angus ground beef, tomatoes, onions, guacamole, sour cream, and green onions. $15
Giovanni Pastrami, Honolulu HI

This was definitely a largo plate of nachos, but it wasn’t very good. The seasoned ground beef wasn’t spicy at all at the pepper jack cheese sauce was super bland. Lame!

Cancun nachos with pollo asado – Cancun Sabor Mexicano

Cancun nachos with pollo asado - Cancun Sabor Mexicano
Corn chips melted with jack cheese, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, whole beans, grilled skinless chicken and jalapenos de la casa. $8.95
Cancun Sabor Mexicano, Berkeley CA

It may not be readily evident from this pic, but this nacho plate is pretty darn big! And delicous! They use organic meats and other amazing ingredients. I’m also very much in love with their salsa bar. They have plenty to choose from and you can keep going back for more!

Huevos rancheros – Circa 59

Huevos rancheros - Circa 59
Over medium eggs, corn tortilla, chorizo, chili verde, avocado. $14
Circa 59, Palm Springs CA

I guess Circa 59 tried to make a fancy version of huevos rancheros, but I was not impressed. The eggs came out fried and not over medium, the tortillas were super greasy and had a weird gummy texture, and the chorizo was WAY too salty. Lame! This was a brunch I wish I could take back.

Crispy fish tacos – Circa 59

Crispy fish tacos - Circa 59
Avocado, tomato, cabbage, sriracha aioli, lime. $16
Circa 59, Palm Springs CA

Wow, I can’t believe I paid $16 for what looks like a pile of barf! The crispy fish nuggets weren’t even crispy – they were super soggy as was the super greasy tortillas that surround this messy dish. I felt like a 5 year old eating the little fish bits in my tacos.

As nice as this restaurant purports to be, they sorely lack in service and food for that matter. We were seated outside without misters and for some reason the scarce waiters refused to give us any water. We had to flag down management to finally get any water. WTF!?
