This dish was just ok. It lacked the depth of flavor that I look for in a delicious gumbo, and there could also have been more of the proteins present. It was more soupy than gumbo. You definitely get a lot of it though, and the price is very reasonable.

This was some amazing flatbread! The Txistorra sausage tasted so good and had a great smokiness to it. I loved the heartiness of the broccoli rabe and manchego cheese.  Everything just worked so well together and it was very filling. Yum!

Project 365: Day 5

I really should stop going out on a work night, ouch! Met Hubbs and Shumster out for drinks last night and of course all the usuals were out too. Needless to say, I stayed out later than I should have and ended up eating cheap, greasy Chinese take out. Not good. What is good is that Hubbs might join the Ireland trip, yay!

I love risotto because I can just whip it up and throw in any leftovers I need to get rid of. I had a package of chicken sausage that I had purchased on sale so I made this risotto that I will be eating the next couple of days for work lunches. It’s not very traditional but it tastes fickin’ good! I try to cook using all natural and organic ingredients when I can.

Office Holiday Party Extravaganza!

So my office held our 2nd Annual Holiday Potluck and everyone (well almost everyone) brought delicious food to share! I’m posting some of the yummy food so you can get a few ideas for your next holiday get together.  If all else fails, make a Costco run apparently. I mean who needs a fancy corporate holiday party when you can have a good ole potluck?! All names have been changed to protect the innocent! 🙂

Simple but delicious, a perennial party favorite! Just wrap ‘Lil Smokies (these are turkey) with crescent pastry rolls (these use a low fat variety) and voile, you have an all-American treat! According to Rapunzel, each piece has only 45 calories!

The perfect combination of beefy meat and sticky sweet. Simmer sliced beef kielbasa sausage in a mixture of pomegranate juice, ketchup and Tabasco sauce until the sauce is thick and reduced. Serve on a buttery Ritz cracker to make it classy! Thanks Dumes!

OK, I made that name up but my roommate IS from Kansas and he makes this delicious dip once in a while. Just combine Velveeta cheese (SO American!) with browned ground beef and a can of Ro-Tel brand diced tomatoes with chiles (another midwestern staple) in a crock pot. Set it and forget it! It’s customary to eat this with potato chips, not tortilla chips, silly!

If you like THIN crust pizza, Firewood Cafe in the Castro is the place to go.  They have one of the thinnest crust around which is great for their mostly carb-conscious patrons, hehe!  I personally love thin crust so I often order pizza from here.  They have 5 different pizzas on their regualr menu and usually one daily special, and they’re all pretty good.  The pizzas aren’t the most creative, but they are tasty, decently sized, and very affordable.  Win, win if you ask me.  This Italian sausage pizza was delicious.  I like how the thin crust stayed crispy, and the vegetables did too.  Their homemade sauce isn’t particularly noteworthy, but it’s yummy enough and doesn’t detract from the toppings.  For $10.75, I’m sold!

I randomly read on Eater.com that Danny Bowien, the chef at Mission Chinese Food, had acquired a smoker and was going to start having bbq on the menu.  So I HAD to order the Chinese bbq platter when I finally saw it on the menu.  I must say that the brisket tastes pretty amazing with a great smoky flavor and oh so tender.  The hot link was ok, didn’t taste very different from others I’ve tried.  I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked the pork trotters – very flavorful.  I was afraid that I wouldn’t like the texture of the skin, but I hardly noticed it from the rest of the meat. And of course, the homemade pickles were great!

This hearty soup tasted surprisingly light considering the amount of ingredients.  The trick to soups with this many vegetables is to cook them all to the same doneness.  Unfortunately, the carrots and white beans in this soup were mushy compared to the other vegetables.  However, it was still a nice, tasty soup for a warm summer day.
