Chicken fried steak – Gussie’s Chicken and Waffles

Chicken fried steak - Gussie's Chicken and Waffles
Served with 2 eggs scrambled, homefries, country bacon gravy and a biscuit. $11.95
Gussie’s Chicken and Waffles, San Francisco CA

This was disgusting! We sat there for a while wondering what it was. There was very little gravy because most of it had soaked into the soft doughy breading to create an odd mealy surface. So gross! I’m surprised that a quintessentially Southern place like Gussie’s can make such a horrible chicken fried steak. The biscuit was also super dry and puck-like.

Coffee - Gussie's Chicken and Waffles

Entrees – AQ Restaurant

Guinea hen - AQ Restaurant
Guinea Hen: sweet potato, cereals and salted persimmon butter. $26
AQ Restaurant, San Francisco CA

I’m sorry, but neither of these entrees were very memorable. There was a lot of stuff on each plate but it all lacked harmony and balance. The individual components were nicely prepared, but I wasn’t excited by any of it. Lame…

Duo of beef - AQ Restaurant
Duo of Beef: black garlic, broccoli with burnt ends and cheddar. $34

Steak and prawns – Zapata Mexican Grill

Steak and prawns - Zapata Mexican Grill
Grilled steak, prawns, rice, black beans, guacamole, salad, salsa and 4 corn tortillas. $13.50
Zapata Mexican Grill, San Francisco CA

I was pleasantly surprised by this plate – I thought it was going ot suck! The prawns were acutally really good though. They were large, juicy and tender. The grilled steak could have been more tender and less salty, but it still tasted great with everything else. And of course, they make sure to pack the plate! πŸ™‚

SF Giant & Fixin’s burger – It’s Tops Coffee Shop

SF Giant & Fixin's burger - It's Tops Coffee Shop
“It’s Tops award-winning fresh ground burgers are juicy and hand formed. Fixin’s are grilled onion, mayo, lettuce, tomato and pickles.” Added Monterey jack cheese and subsituted crispy onion rings. $11.20
It’s Tops Coffee Shop, San Francisco CA

I’d been meaning to finally try this hole-in-the-wall 50’s diner on Market Street. We were starving after a night at the theatre so we decided to duck in for a late meal on our way home. The restaurant decor is very kitschy and the service was super friendly, but the food was marginal verging on just plain bad. This burger was pretty large, but really boring and sad looking. The onion rings were limp, soggy and greasy. Ew!

A disastrous dinner at Kitchen Story!

Three buddies - Kitchen Story
Three Buddies: grilled double sided short ribs, broccolini, kimchi rice, Asian. pear. $18
Kitchen Story, San Francisco CA

I REALLY wanted to like this place! I’ve been to 3 of the previous restaurants in this seemingly cursed location, and the mediocrity continues! 7×7 Magazine has this place on their list of date spots, which is great if you’re speed dating (more on that later).

Negatives:
– Even though they only had 2 reservations a 6pm, they couldn’t confirm my reservation. I had to point out my own name on their reservation list! Sad.

– There were only 3 tables occupied, but we were still seated at the most dreary, cave-like table possible. The people a few tables over were even using their cell phone lights to read the menu.

– Less than an hour into dinner, we ordered another round of wine and declined dessert. They QUICKLY brought our check, had us sign and took it away. This is normally fine, but they also set the 2-top table next to us for three people while the waiting parties breathed on top of us from the bar. I swear they must have pushed the other table closer to ours because the third menu was practically touching our table! Omg, we get the hint! We are no longer customers and should leave! That’s just wrong. That’s what I meant about speed dating above, this place seems to care more about volume than service. Even the table on the other side us felt it. I overheard them when they sat down, whispering that they needed to eat quickly because they were told that their table was reserved soon. Sheesh! If you can’t fit a party in for a decent dinner, please don’t seat them and rush them! We had a reservation and STILL felt rushed! Last time I checked, an hour isn’t a long seating for dinner.

Big hug - Kitchen Story
Big Hug: their famous Millionaire’s bacon wrapped bay U-10 scallop, grilled eggplant over spicy cilantro sauce, garlic egg noodle. $16

Omg, these garlic noodles were disgusting! They tasted like cardboard with dry rot – seriously. The scallops were overcooked and the bacon made an impenetrable coat around them. This was more like a “slap on the face” than a “big hug”.

Spicy Kobe rolls - Kitchen Story
Spicy Kobe Rolls: grilled Wagyu strips wrapped cucumber, mint, spicy limt beetroot sauce. $10

I know you can’t make anything out, but that’s probably for the better. These meat rolls were hard to chew, hard to handle,Β and poorly conceived.

Bread and butter - Kitchen Story
Bread and butter. Complimentary

Positives:
– The workers are really sweet when they’re not trying to kick you out of your table.

– The portions are decent.

– My Three Buddies short ribs weren’t overly salty.

I’ve heard that this place is better for brunch so I’ll give them another chance. Hopefully they won’t completely disappoint again.

Combo numero uno – Puerto Alegre

Combo numero uno - Puerto Alegre
Shredded beef crispy taco, shredded chicken enchilada, and a chile relleno (green pepper stuffed with Monterey jack cheese, covered in egg batter) served wtih rice, black beans and small side salad. $10.85
Puerto Alegre, San Francisco CA

Wow, this was plenty of food to fill me up! I can get pretty hungry though so I love combination plates. You get to try multiple things at a reasonable price.

Loco moco – Starbelly

Loco moco - Starbelly
Prather Ranch beef patty, steamed rice, sunny egg, green onions and sweet soy. $10
Starbelly, San Francisco CA

Ugh, this was a joke! In my nostalgia for Hawaii, I was stupid enough to order a loco moco from Starbelly. The hamburger patty was tough and bland and there was no yummy gravy! And by the time it made it to the table, it was cold. Gross. I usually love this restaurant, but we were having brunch with a group and the service was terrible! They were super slow and inattentive. Also, more than one of our dishes came out overcooked and they even forgot a couple of our plates. Lame!

Super loco moco – Big Island Grill

Super loco moco - Big Island Grill
The three items I chose were homemade hamburger patties, roast pork, and spam. Served on a bed of rice tropped with two eggs over medium and homemade brown gravy. $11.25
Big Island Grill, Kailua-Kona HI

Dear lord! This plate was a monster. I honestly didn’t expect it to be this large when I ordered it, partly because it was only $11.25. But I was amazed and a little queasy when I saw it, lol. It tasted amesome though and I loved the brown gravy! Thank goodness we went on a hike that day.

Super loco moco - Big Island Grill
This is how it arrived to the table, just covered in delicious gravy. Lol!

Kaeng pa-nang – Original Thai Cuisine

Kaeng pa-nang - Original Thai Cuisine
Panang curry with beef. Rich, strong, zesty with a touch of coconut milk, peppers, peas, carrots, zucchini, basil leaves and kaffir lime leaves. $13
Original Thai Cuisine, Kailua-Kona HI

This had a lot of great flavor and you can choose the spiciness level. Of course I asked for “Thai hot”! The beef was a little tough and chewy though.

Korean steak street tacos – Duke’s Waikiki

Korean steak street tacos - Duke's Waikiki
Kochujan marinated steak, salsa verde, lettuce, onions, cilantro, flour tortillas. $12.95
Duke’s Waikiki, Honolulu HI

These tacos had a lot of flavor, but they were definitely on the salty side. Perhaps the steak was over-marinated or something. I loved the pickled side though!
