SF Giant & Fixin’s burger – It’s Tops Coffee Shop

SF Giant & Fixin's burger - It's Tops Coffee Shop
“It’s Tops award-winning fresh ground burgers are juicy and hand formed. Fixin’s are grilled onion, mayo, lettuce, tomato and pickles.” Added Monterey jack cheese and subsituted crispy onion rings. $11.20
It’s Tops Coffee Shop, San Francisco CA

I’d been meaning to finally try this hole-in-the-wall 50’s diner on Market Street. We were starving after a night at the theatre so we decided to duck in for a late meal on our way home. The restaurant decor is very kitschy and the service was super friendly, but the food was marginal verging on just plain bad. This burger was pretty large, but really boring and sad looking. The onion rings were limp, soggy and greasy. Ew!

Gyoza – Wasabi Bistro

Gyoza - Wasabi Bistro
Japanese pot stickers with pork and vegetables inside. $5.95
Wasabi Bistro, San Francisco CA

I came here for a random weekday lunch after hitting the gym and it was pretty empty. The food was pretty good though and decently priced. These gyoza were delicious, but I rarely meet a gyoza I don’t like. Hehe.

Edamame - Wasabi Bistro
Edamame. Complimentary

Place setting - Wasabi Bistro
Place setting. Omg, I just noticed that the chopsticks are from a different restaurant. Perhaps the same owner? Tacky…

Cheese plate – Maven

Cheese plate - Maven
Delice de bourgogne (triple creme cow’s milk cheese), petit agour (sheep’s milk aged cheese), roaring forties (blue cheese) with pears, pistachios and honey. $16
Maven, San Francisco CA

Wow, this was A LOT of cheese! We were having a four-course tasting menu but we weren’t sure how much food it would be so we ordered this cheese plate early on to supplement our meal. Boy, we wish we hadn’t. No, the cheese was amazing but we were SO full that we really didn’t need anymore food. We tried our best ot eat as much of it as we could though. I think the roaring forties blue cheese with the honey on top was my favorite. NOMS!

Four Roses Manhattan - Maven
Four Roses Manhattan. $9

A disastrous dinner at Kitchen Story!

Three buddies - Kitchen Story
Three Buddies: grilled double sided short ribs, broccolini, kimchi rice, Asian. pear. $18
Kitchen Story, San Francisco CA

I REALLY wanted to like this place! I’ve been to 3 of the previous restaurants in this seemingly cursed location, and the mediocrity continues! 7×7 Magazine has this place on their list of date spots, which is great if you’re speed dating (more on that later).

Negatives:
– Even though they only had 2 reservations a 6pm, they couldn’t confirm my reservation. I had to point out my own name on their reservation list! Sad.

– There were only 3 tables occupied, but we were still seated at the most dreary, cave-like table possible. The people a few tables over were even using their cell phone lights to read the menu.

– Less than an hour into dinner, we ordered another round of wine and declined dessert. They QUICKLY brought our check, had us sign and took it away. This is normally fine, but they also set the 2-top table next to us for three people while the waiting parties breathed on top of us from the bar. I swear they must have pushed the other table closer to ours because the third menu was practically touching our table! Omg, we get the hint! We are no longer customers and should leave! That’s just wrong. That’s what I meant about speed dating above, this place seems to care more about volume than service. Even the table on the other side us felt it. I overheard them when they sat down, whispering that they needed to eat quickly because they were told that their table was reserved soon. Sheesh! If you can’t fit a party in for a decent dinner, please don’t seat them and rush them! We had a reservation and STILL felt rushed! Last time I checked, an hour isn’t a long seating for dinner.

Big hug - Kitchen Story
Big Hug: their famous Millionaire’s bacon wrapped bay U-10 scallop, grilled eggplant over spicy cilantro sauce, garlic egg noodle. $16

Omg, these garlic noodles were disgusting! They tasted like cardboard with dry rot – seriously. The scallops were overcooked and the bacon made an impenetrable coat around them. This was more like a “slap on the face” than a “big hug”.

Spicy Kobe rolls - Kitchen Story
Spicy Kobe Rolls: grilled Wagyu strips wrapped cucumber, mint, spicy limt beetroot sauce. $10

I know you can’t make anything out, but that’s probably for the better. These meat rolls were hard to chew, hard to handle, and poorly conceived.

Bread and butter - Kitchen Story
Bread and butter. Complimentary

Positives:
– The workers are really sweet when they’re not trying to kick you out of your table.

– The portions are decent.

– My Three Buddies short ribs weren’t overly salty.

I’ve heard that this place is better for brunch so I’ll give them another chance. Hopefully they won’t completely disappoint again.

Dol sot bi bim bap – K-pop

Dol sot bi bim bap - K-pop
“Mixed rice” with soy marinated chicken strips, fried egg, assorted vegetables and served on a hot stone pot with soup. $13.95
K-pop, San Francisco CA

This was pretty good and super hot temperature-wise! I wish the egg was runnier (maybe even raw like other bi bim baps), but it still tasted good and the whole thing was flavorful.

I think this Korean restaurant is a great new option in the Castro. The food is a little on the salty side but the flavors are great. The service also needs improvement. At the end of our meal, we could NOT get our check no matter how hard we tried. We literally stalked all the servers until we could finally flag one down. I hope this places stays open though.

OB Lager beer - K-pop

OB Lager beer. I’ve always found Korean beer to be super drinkable!

Mu shu bbq duck wrap – Harbor Village Kitchen

Mu shu bbq duck wrap - Harbor Village Kitchen
Stir fried with lettuce, bamboo shoot, black fungus, and carrot with a flour tortilla. $9.50
Harbor Village Kitchen, San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

Omg, this was just a large greasy pile of crap! The duck was gross and stringy and I still can’t believe they threw in a flour tortilla to accompnay the mu shu pile. That was laughable! Let’s just say I didn’t eat much of this.

Artic char – Maven

Artic char - Maven
Fried brussels sprouts, white beans, red verjus, golden raisins, dill. Bloomspot 4-course chef’s tasting menu with cocktail pairings for two.
Maven, San Francisco CA

I love how crispy they fried the skin on the char. The brussels sprouts were delicious and the shallot(?) compote on top was also yummy. A successful dish.

Bitter Brother in Law cocktail - Maven

Bitter Brother in Law Cocktail: pisco, vermouth, elderflower, gentian, Peruvian bitters.
Why the bitter in-law gotta be latino?! 😉

Sweet basil chicken and minced basil chicken – Coriander Gourmet Thai

Sweet basil chicken and minced basil chicken - Coriander Gourmet Thai
2 item combo with sweet chicken and crispy basil and minced basil chicken with pad thai and steamed broccoli. $9.77
Coriander Gourmet Thai, San Francisco CA

Oh, mall food… We definitely have a love/hate relationship. I love that you’re so convenient but I hate that you’re usually of really bad quality and typically super salty. Coriander Gourmet Thai was decent and a pretty good value so I can’t complain too much.

Spicy pork with ssam – K-pop

Spicy pork with ssam - K-pop
Korean style marinated pork mixed with onion, scallion, and sesame seeds served with vegetable wraps. $14.95
K-pop, San Francisco CA

I didn’t realize this dish was going to be SO paleo-friendly when I ordered it, but it was a nice bonus! The flavors were good but this thing was WAY too salty! Geez, I could barely eat it after a while. Too bad because It looked and smelled amazing.

Ban chan - K-pop
Ban chan. Complimentary
Mmm, I love ban chan and seven different kinds is decent at this price point.

Beef cheek “a l’orange” – Mission Chinese Food

Beef cheek a l'orange - Mission Chinese Food
Orange glaze, kaffir lime leaf, satsuma, sesame. $14
Mission Chinese Food, San Francisco CA

Wow, I really liked this dish! Mission Chinese Food is always updating their menu (well, at least their online to-go menu that I order from) and some dishes are more successful that others. Boom, beef cheek a l’orange was da bomb, lol! The cheeks were rich and juicy and the sauce was delicious. The coating could have been crispier, but I think it got soggy during the delivery time. This would kick ass straight from the kitchen!

Pollo asado super nachos – Zapata Mexican Grill

Pollo asado super nachos - Zapata Mexican Grill
Grilled chicken, black beans, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, and salsa. $8.75
Zapata Mexican Grill, San Francisco CA

Gut bomb alert! But super nachos are one of my many guilty pleasures. Granted I don’t order this often, but they are especially delicious after a night of partying, lol!
