Fish tacos – El Chupacabra

Fish tacos - El Chupacabra
Beer battered cod, cabbage, white sauce and pico. 3 on soft white corn tortillas served with tortilla chips and limes. $6.99
El Chupacabra, Seattle WA

These tacos were a little sad, so that’s why I’m glad they were only $6.99. The fried fish didn’t taste so fresh and the corn tortillas were cold and limp. The white sauce wasn’t even white! As elusive as a chupacabra, so was the pressence of a decent fish taco!

Salsas - El Chupacabra

Different salsas at the table (you’ll need them!).

Sunomono with crab – Izakaya Yuzuki

Sunomono with crab - Izakaya Yuzuki
Vinegar dressed cucumber salad with crab meat, seaweed and flowers. Tasting menu
Izakaya Yuzuki, San Francisco CA

Wow, this was the fanciest cucumber salad (sunomono) I’ve ever had! The baby cucumbers were intricately sliced, but not all the way through so they remained intact while still being able to see the expert knife-work. The fresh crab was delicious and the dressing had the perfect balance of tart and sweet. Noms!

Limoncello mascarpone cake – Fishermen’s Grotto

Limoncello mascarpone cake - Fishermen's Grotto
A sweet and tart lemon creation. Two layers of sponge cake filled with mascarpone and topped with vanilla shavings. $8.25
Fishermen’s Grotto, San Francisco CA

Noms, what a great combination! This cake wasn’t overly sweet and it had a great lemon taste – perfect! The sponge cake was moist and super flavorful.

Tortilla chips and guacamole – La Carta de Oaxaca

Tortilla chips and guacamole - La Carta de Oaxaca
The food here is very good, but I think it’s over-priced for the portions! I don’t know why Seattleites are willing to pay these prices for something that could easily cost a dollar or two less. That goes for the entire menu. $6
La Carta de Oaxaca, Seattle WA

Blue statice flowers
Blue statice flowers (Limonium sp., Plumbaginaceae), Port Orchard.

House margarita – El Chupacabra

House margarita - El Chupacabra

Gold tequila, triple sec and their own sour mix, muddled limes, shaken and served on the rocks in a pint glass. $6
El Chupacabra, Seattle WA

These margaritas were decent. I asked for “no salt” but that’s a minor mistake. There were really annoying “ladies” sitting at the bar though and they were bullying a table of kids sitting nearby. Lame! The ladies seemed liked regulars so I guess they were permitted by the bar staff to bully other guests… 😦

Obanzai – Izakaya Yuzuki

Obanzai - Izakaya Yuzuki
Kyoto style cooked local vegetables, served in three different preparations. Tasting menu
Izakaya Yuzuki, San Francisco CA

I can’t remember all the vegetables in this dish, but on the left are eggplants and on the right are a type of yam. The bowl contains a leafy green. The preparations were delicious and the eggplants were my favorite!

Crab cioppino – Fishermen’s Grotto

Crab cioppino - Fishermen's Grotto
Dungeness crab, prawns and clams in a rich tomato stew. You pick it from the shell. We provide the bib. $29.95
Fishermen’s Grotto, San Francisco CA

Mmm, this was SO delicious! The tomato stew was certainly rich and flavorful and there was A LOT of cracked dungeness crab in there. I had fun wearing the plastic bib and picking out as much crab meat as possible. 🙂

Cabernet sauvignon - Fishermen's Grotto

House cabernet sauvignon. $7

Spunky Monkey flowers

Chicken cabbage salad – Dinosaurs

Chicken cabbage salad - Dinosaurs
Shredded chicken with green and red cabbage, carrots, daikon, and rau rum. Served with crushed roasted peanuts, fried shallots, and a sweetened lime-fish sauce dressing. $5.75
Dinosaurs, San Francisco CA

I liked this salad, but the chicken wasn’t as good as the kind they put in their banh mi’s. But everything tastes better with that lime-fish sauce on top!

Zaru tofu – Izakaya Yuzuki

Zaru tofu - Izakaya Yuzuki
House-made fresh tofu with sea salt. Tasting menu
Izakaya Yuzuki, San Francisco CA

This was different from any tofu I’ve ever had – I enjoyed it. The texture was super soft and creamy. It had very little flavor so the sea salt was useful. It was also a bit difficult to eat this with the awkward wooden spoons they provided but I like a challenge. 🙂

Sea salt - Izakaya Yuzuki
