Ling cod tartare – The Walrus and the Carpenter

Ling cod tartare - The Walrus and the Carpenter
Scallion, ginger, miso, egg yolk, asparagus. $10
The Walrus and the Carpenter, Seattle WA

I’ve never had ling cod tartare before so this was a new experience. I’m glad I tried it, but I’m not sure I would order it again. It tasted fine, but there were a slimey textural element that I wasn’t fond of. I don’t know if it was from the ling cod or the egg and miso combination. Honestly, I’m not sure what the texture of raw ling cod is supposed to be in the first place. 🙂

Kakiage – Izakaya Yuzuki

Kakiage - Izakaya Yuzuki
Shrimp and root vegetable tempura with green tea salt. Tasting menu
Izakaya Yuzuki, San Francisco CA

This dish was very new to me – whole shrimp with shredded root vegetables fried tempura style! I liked the flavors especially with the dipping sauce, but the texture was a little limp and chewy. The pieces looked crispy but they really weren’t. Hmm…

Shrimp spring rolls – Pho Big Bowl

Shrimp spring rolls - Pho Big Bowl

Goi cuon tom. Shrimp, rice noodle and veggies. $4.85
Pho Big Bowl, Seattle WA

Decent shrimp spring rolls. What I was struck by was the thick consistency of their peanut sauce. I’ve never had one so thick! It still tasted good though.

Tacos al pastor – La Carta de Oaxaca

Tacos al pastor - La Carta de Oaxaca
Barbecued pork in homemade tortillas with cilantro, onion and hot sauce. $6
La Carta de Oaxaca, Seattle WA

Hmm, again, this tasted good but I wasn’t totally impressed. Perhaps I’m just spoiled from living near the Mission in San Francisco where I can get authentic, delicious tacos any time and for less money.

Half dozen oysters – The Walrus and the Carpenter

Half dozen oysters - The Walrus and the Carpenter
3 Sea Cow oysters (right), Hammersley Inlet, WA. 3 Treasure Cove oysters (left), Case Inlet, WA. Served with a mignonette and fresh horseradish. Happy hour $12.39
The Walrus and the Carpenter, Seattle WA

These little oysters were delicious! I sat at the oyster bar during happy hour and this place was packed. I waited over 30 minutes for a seat to open up but it was worth it. I will say that there was a little bit of shell debris in some of my oysters, but that was easily forgivable for their freshness. The service here was also top notch. The guy behind the bar was great as was the hostess!

Variegato amarena and Caramello al sale – D’Ambrosio Gelato

Variegato amarena and Caramello al sale - D'Ambrosio Gelato
Kirsch cherry and salted caramel gelato. Small $3.95
D’Ambrosio Gelato, Seattle WA

This gelato had a very creamy texture. I liked the cherry flavor more than the salted caramel which is surprising. I think the salted caramel had an odd waxy texture that I didn’t like.

Mole negro oaxoqueno – La Carta de Oaxaca

Mole negro oaxoqueno - La Carta de Oaxaca
The house specialty. Black mole with chicken, served with white rice and tortillas. $11
La Carta de Oaxaca, Seattle WA

Omg, this was the smallest portion of chicken I have ever received at a restaurant. It was a small chicken thigh with the bone in so you even couldn’t count the volume of the bone! What a joke – this was more a snack than a proper lunch. While the mole was tasty and there was a lot of it on the plate, there was very little protein to enjoy it with. When I have money to throw away, I may return to dine here…
