Baby beets – Luce

Baby beets - Luce
Lightly smoked with fig branches, pickled cherries, black olive, fresh ricotta. Tasting menu $95
Luce, San Francisco CA

I can certainly appreciate an artfully plated dish, but this is going a bit far maybe. There are literally only four tiny pieces of beets on this plate. I understand that there are many components here, but give me some more damn beets! LOL, I’m only slightly joking… The beets were delicious, and so were the pickled cherries. I think that was a beet gelee too, but don’t quote me on that.

Pork rib and catfish combo – Sandra Dee’s Barbeque & Seafood

Pork rib and catfish combo - Sandra Dee's Barbeque and Seafood
String beans, mac & cheese, hush puppy, cornbread muffin. 2 item combo $16
Sandra Dee’s Barbeque & Seafood, Sacramento CA

I liked most of the items on this plate. The bbq pork ribs were delicious, tender, and the bbq sauce had a nice heat to it. The mac and cheese was oozy-gooey and just the way I like it! The catfish strips were tiny and not properly cleaned (there was a lot of that gross silver crap that gives it a metallic flavor), and the muffin was a dense, dry hockey puck. The beans were fine, and the hush puppy was slightly greasy. I don’t know if I’d go running back when in the Sacramento area because there are other bbq places to try first.

Bianca pizza – Ragazza

Bianca pizza - Ragazza
Onion crema, shaved garlic, preserved lemon, aged provolone, wild arugula. Banquet-style dinner
Ragazza, San Francisco CA

Sorry for the dirty plate, but I had a lot of food before grabbing a piece of this pizza, hehe. And it was a delicious piece of pizza at that! I think it was the combination of the onion crema, garlic and preserved lemon that really made this pizza sing. The wild arugula was a great peppery topping. Noms!

Quesadilla de pibil – El Techo de Lolinda

Quesadilla de pibil - El Techo de Lolinda
Braised pork shoulder, oaxaca cheese, cilantro, salsa. $9
El Techo de Lolinda, San Francisco CA

Finally, a dish from El Techo that was actually good and priced approriately! Actually this was pretty large so I wouldn’t have minded if it had cost a few more bucks. The pork was tender and really flavorful, and I like their smokey salsa. I thought the oaxaca cheese was going to be the white, crumbly kind but I was happy to see that it was thick and melty!

Guacamole – El Techo de Lolinda

Guacamole - El Techo de Lolinda
Cotija cheese, tortilla chips. $7
El Techo de Lolinda, San Francisco CA

This guacamole was good, but just because you add a little cheese on top of a small bowl of it doesn’t mean it’s worth seven bucks! I think most of the food items on their menu are overpriced, and all their tortilla chips were greasy. Not running back here to eat again any time soon.

Chips and salsa - El Techo de Lolinda
Chips and salsa. $3
Kinda lame that they also charge you for chips and salsa when most restaurants provide it complimentary. It’s not even listed on their menu so most people assume that it’s free.

Warm hand pulled mozzarella – Ragazza

Warm hand pulled mozzarella - Ragazza
With heirloom tomatoes, brown butter and sage. Banquet-style dinner
Ragazza, San Francisco CA

Simple dishes with quality products are the absolute best! This was SO yummy! I love mozzarella and heirloom tomtatoes so it’s not a surprise that I would like this dish, but they added even more flavor with the brown butter and fried sage so I was a total fan.

Cheese arepa – Roxy’s Cafe

Cheese arepa - Roxy's Cafe
Sweet white corn bread, Howard McGinnis Ranch fresh berries, homemade ice cream. 10-course chef’s tasting menu $75
Roxy’s Cafe, San Francisco CA

This dessert was very tasty and I liked that it wasn’t super sweet. The warm cheese arepa was delicious and slightly savory which was a great contrast to the sweet berries and ice cream. I also loved the colors on the plate.

Fried arancini – Ragazza

Fried arancini - Ragazza
With smoked mozzarella and sun-dried tomato pesto. Banquet-style dinner
Ragazza, San Francisco CA

We came here for a friend’s birthday celebration and sat in the cool white tent located in the back patio. We had a great time with amazing friends and, of course, the food was fabulous. These arancini were delicious and perfectly cooked (not greasy at all!). The smoked mozzarella inside the fried risotto ball was gooey and flavorful, and the accompanying meat sauce was wonderful too.

I really liked this (tacky) cowboy statue at the de Young Museum, hehe! Hey, it has lots of movement! 🙂

Faith’s warm ham and cheese toast – Town Hall

Faith's warm ham and cheese toast - Town Hall
Poached egg, jalapeno cream. $14
Town Hall, San Francisco CA

Omg, this appetizer was a meal by itself! And a delicious one at that, but you certainly can’t have more food after this dish. It’s super heavy and filled with fatty goodness. You are not warned on the menu, but it also comes with 3 jalapeno poppers, lol! The jalapeno cream sauce is frickin’ delicious and the poached egg is great after it’s broken and mixes with the cream sauce. This dish is like a fancy croque madame gone crazy! (But a good kinda crazy.) Noms!

Salami pizza – Del Popolo

Salami pizza - Del Popolo
Tomato, mozzarella, basil, sweet peppers. $14
Del Popolo, San Francisco CA

This food truck is pretty cool because it’s over a story tall and they literally have a pizza oven conveyor belt in there! It’s super popular and the pizzas are pretty good, but honestly I’m not a fan of the brunt, blistered crusts. For me, the ash taste is overwhelming and pretty much contaminates the rest of the pizza’s flavor. I guess I’m one of the few who doesn’t like it that way.
