Work bbq at Marina Park

Marinated chicken on the grill

Marinated chicken on the grill (with Maggie girl in the background)!

Our work group decided to have another weekend bbq to celebrate a birthday/last day of work. We decided to switch it up and have it in the East Bay this time around. It was a little cold and windy, but we had a great time eating, drinking, playing volleyball, and just hanging out.

It took a bit of effort and lot of lighter fluid to get this baby going!

Easiest chicken salad sandwich ever!

Easiest chicken salad sandwich
I make this sandwich with leftovers and things I already had in the house, so it’s super easy!

Ingredients
Leftover roasted chicken from the store, chopped
Celery, finely chopped
Capers
Tartar sauce
Mayonnaise
Salt and pepper
Cheese
Bread or roll

Combine the first 6 ingredients in a bowl and mix to the consistency and seasoning you like. I’ve found that adding tartar sauce is great because it already has some of the great flavors I enjoy. There’s usually some in the fridge already so it’s also very convenient. Scoop a generous portion onto the bread, top with cheese, then I like to put it under the broiler until the cheese is melted and the bread is a little toasted.

There you have it! A delicious, quick and easy chicken salad sammy, enjoy!

Breakfast sandwich – Big Ed’s Alley Inn

Breakfast sandwich - Big Ed's Alley Inn
Bacon, eggs, cheese and mayo of white bread. Served with home fries. $8.95
Big Ed’s Alley Inn, Reno NV

I think this just about gave me a heart attack, lol! The sandwich bread was definitely grilled on the same area on the grill where the bacon and eggs where first cooked. And that healthy slathering of mayo just about stopped my heart. If I was younger, I’d say this was awesome but sadly I’m getting old and have to admit that this was a bit too greasy and fatty for me…

Coffee - Big Ed's Alley Inn

Arepa con relleno – Poquito

Arepa con relleno - Poquito
A plain arepa topped with pork fritada, green onions, sweet plantain, cheese, white beans, pickled onions. $9
Poquito, San Francisco CA

This was not what I was expecting when I saw “arepa” on the menu, but this was SO good! It pretty much had everything on it so it was pretty filling. The pork was delicious as was the fried plantain. A heavy dish, but very nommy!

African wood sorrel (Oxalis pes-caprae, Oxalidaceae)
Yellow Bermuda buttercup/African wood sorrel (Oxalis pes-caprae, Oxalidaceae), 17th Street. It’s wintertime in San Francisco so these weedy plants are popping up everywhere! I wouldn’t want these rampants weeds in my own garden, but I will admit that they’re cute.

Breakfast platter – The WestWood

Breakfast platter - The WestWood
Levain bread, prosciutto, chevre, deviled eggs, brown sugar-glazed bacon, pickled vegetables, fresh fruit. $14
The WestWood, San Francisco CA

I am torn about this place. The food was decent, but the wervice was really mixed. I think the two owners(?) were running service that morning and the older white-haired man was really nice, but the younger dark-haired man was rude and unattentive. I liked the variety of this breakfast platter, but I’m still not certain that the cheese was actually goat cheese. I asked for confirmation, but the affirmative still seemed unsure. It’s also really dark in the back so you should request to sit outside or near the front if you want to enjoy the bright sunny weather for a leisurely weekend brunch. Otherwise, it feels like you’re dining in a cave.

Pepperoni slice – Arinell Pizza

Pepperoni slice - Arinell Pizza
Thin crust, New York style, neapolitan slice with pepperoni. $3.25
Arinell Pizza, San Francisco CA

I always find myself unable to resist getting a slice at Arinell once I’ve exited 16th Street Bart station starving after work. I’ll inevitably slink inside and grab a slice on my way to the gym.

Super prawn taco – La Corneta Taqueria

Super prawn taco - La Corneta Taqueria
Black beans, rice, lettuce, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, spicy pico de gallo salsa. $5.50
La Corneta Taqueria, San Francisco CA

They sure know how to pile on the toppings at La Corneta! The prawns were perfectly cooked, tender and very flavorful. Perhaps, it was a tad on the salty side, but I enjoyed this very much!

Tortilla chips and salsa - La Corneta Taqueria
Tortilla chips and salsa. Complimentary

Super burrito al pastor – Taqueria Cancun

Super burrito al pastor - Taqueria Cancun
Marinated pork with rice, beans, cilantro, salsa, onions, cheese, avocado, and sour cream. Served with corn totilla chips. $6.50
Taqueria Cancun, San Francisco CA

Wow, this place is a mad house at 2 AM! I was in desparate need of food so I stumbled into this joint for a large, delicious burrito. I’m pretty sure it was good, I think… Lol! The intercom announcing the order numbers is REALLY loud, but I supposed that’s necessary at that hour. 🙂

Fried egg sandwich – Universal Cafe

Fried egg sandwich - Universal Cafe
House-made sourdough English muffin, house-made porchetta, spicy tomato confit, yellow cheddar, mixed greens salad. $14.50
Universal Cafe, San Francisco CA

When the side salad is the best part of your meal, there’s something wrong. The housemade English muffin was dense, doughy and undercooked, the tomato confit was on the sour side, and the porchetta was too fatty and extremely difficult to chew.

Sugar salt and pepper - Universal Cafe
Sugar, salt and pepper.
