Bloody mary – Escena Lounge & Grill

Bloody mary - Escena Lounge & Grill

Garnished with olives, lemon, lime, and celery. $8
Escena Lounge & Grill, Palm Springs CA

We came here for a late lunch after a morning of shopping and we were surprised how nice it was. It’s just down the road from the PS house, so it was nice to discover a new nearby place to eat and relax. It was super sunny on the patio so this bloody mary was welcomed! It was on the large side and very tasty – score!

Chicken lettuce wraps – Lulu California Bistro

Chicken lettuce wraps - Lulu California Bistro
Minced chicken, water chestnut, crispy noodles, and sprouts served with lettuce wraps. Happy hour $7.49
Lulu California Bistro, Palm Springs CA

This wasn’t the best chicken lettuce wrap I’ve ever had. In fact, it was just marginal. But the price was great and the fun, hip atmosphere at Lulu helps to make up for the mediocre food.

Uptown special – Gussie’s Chicken and Waffles

Uptown special - Gussie's Chicken and Waffles
One southern fried chicken breast and one sweet potato waffle served with sweet cream whipped butter and warm home made brown sugar syrup. $10.54
Gussie’s Chicken and Waffles, San Francisco CA

Hmm, this was such a disappoinment! The chicken was way overcooked and the waffle was limp and lifeless! The service was super slow so maybe this was just waiting under the heat lamp so long that it dried out more than it should have.

Overcooked chicken - Gussie's Chicken and Waffles
I could barely cut through some of the chicken pieces because it was SO overcooked! If there was any flavor in this chicken, I couldn’t taste any of it because it was hard as a rock.

Fried fresh calamari – Yankee Pier

Fried fresh calamari - Yankee Pier
Topped with scallions, served with cocktail sauce and tartar sauce. $12.75
Yankee Pier, San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

Ew, why do I torture myself with bad airport food?! The calamari was super dry and chewy and none of the pieces were any bigger than popcorn. I must have gotten the bottom of the frozen bag or something.

The service was also horrendous and annoying. He was SO frickin’ pushy and he could barely speak English. He was so rude that I wanted to strangle him. Ugh, I miss Terminal 2!

Prather Ranch burger – Starbelly

Prather Ranch burger - Starbelly
March 2, 2014. With aged cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, house cut fries and pickle, grilled sesame seed challah bun. $13
Starbelly, San Francisco CA

Apparently, Starbelly believes that their burger is SO amazing that it needs 1 hour to prepare it and get it to your table. Puh-lease! This was my final meal at Starbelly, and it wasn’t even that good. Time to move onto greener pastures.

Entrees – Wayfare Tavern

Butcher's filet - Wayfare Tavern
Butcher’s Filet: shallot confit, bone marrow bordelaise, crispy onion, marjoram. $28
Wayfare Tavern, San Francisco CA

This filet dish was SO rich and delicious! The meat was really tender and flavorful and the shallot confit was amazing!

Seared tuna special - Wayfare Tavern
Seared Tuna Special: roasted baby carrots and turnips, root puree and herbs.

Organic fried chicken - Wayfare Tavern
Organic Fried Chicken: buttermilk brine, roasted garlic, crispy woody herbs, lemon. $24

The fried chicken was probably everyone’s favorite entree at the table. It was SO flavorful, juicy and tender. The breading was super herby and the chicken was perfectly cooked!

Sonoma duck - Wayfare Tavern
Sonoma Duck: mustard green tortellini, chanterelles, double consomme, poached winter citrus. $30

Chicken fried steak – Gussie’s Chicken and Waffles

Chicken fried steak - Gussie's Chicken and Waffles
Served with 2 eggs scrambled, homefries, country bacon gravy and a biscuit. $11.95
Gussie’s Chicken and Waffles, San Francisco CA

This was disgusting! We sat there for a while wondering what it was. There was very little gravy because most of it had soaked into the soft doughy breading to create an odd mealy surface. So gross! I’m surprised that a quintessentially Southern place like Gussie’s can make such a horrible chicken fried steak. The biscuit was also super dry and puck-like.

Coffee - Gussie's Chicken and Waffles
Coffee. $2.59

Entrees – AQ Restaurant

Guinea hen - AQ Restaurant
Guinea Hen: sweet potato, cereals and salted persimmon butter. $26
AQ Restaurant, San Francisco CA

I’m sorry, but neither of these entrees were very memorable. There was a lot of stuff on each plate but it all lacked harmony and balance. The individual components were nicely prepared, but I wasn’t excited by any of it. Lame…

Duo of beef - AQ Restaurant
Duo of Beef: black garlic, broccoli with burnt ends and cheddar. $34
