Gnocchi with milk-braised pork – Pesce

Gnocchi with milk-braised pork - Pesce
Maiale al latte. Pancetta, sage. $14
Pesce, San Francisco CA

I was surprised when this came out and it was almost a thick soup. When I read gnocchi, I thought it was gonna be a dry pasta dish. It’s pretty great that chefs can prepare food in so many ways. This dish was super rich and hearty, but it wasn’t my favorite. I’m not sure that I liked the gnocchi as a soup after all.

Szechuan beef – Jasmine Tea House

Szechuan beef - Jasmine Tea House
$9.50
Jasmine Tea House, San Francisco CA

I’m a sucker for salty, deep fried, saucy Chinese food so this dish was right up my alley! They pack a lot of food into those delivery containers so I can’t complain. The beef is probably not the best quality, but I really like the flavor of the dish and they can make it on the spicier side too.

French toast – Mission Bowling Club

French toast - Mission Bowling Club
Mascarpone, maple butter, fruit compote. $9
Mission Bowling Club, San Francisco CA

This french toast was ok, it was a bit on the greasy side which is a definite theme at MBC. I’m not sure I liked the blob of mascarpone cheese either. It was a little too much for me and could have been incorporated more creatively.

Empanadas – Fresca

Empanadas - Fresca
Peruvian aji de gallina, salsa criolla, hardboiled egg, olive, greens. $8
Fresca, San Francisco CA

These empanadas were really tasty and nicely priced at four bucks a piece. The crust was flaky and buttery and the Peruvian filling was delicious. Mmm…

Cocktails - Fresca
Killing Tyme: Four roses bourbon infused hibiscus, thyme, canton madeira, orange bitters. $10
House Manhattan. $10

Warm banana bread – 1760

Warm banana bread - 1760
‘Chunky monkey’ ice cream, peanut butter crunch. $9
1760, San Francisco CA

This was probably one of the better dishes I tried at 1760 and I’m not even a huge dessert person. That doesn’t mean that this dessert completely rocked, just that the other dishes weren’t all that good. I’m also a sucker for caramelized bananas! Although the plate was a little messy and chaotic, this dish tasted pretty yummy! (The banana bread could’ve been a little warmer though).

Americano - 1760
Americano. $3

Fried chicken and waffles – Mission Bowling Club

Fried chicken and waffles - Mission Bowling Club
Salted chili, maple butter. $12
Mission Bowling Club, San Francisco CA

Ugh, I was NOT impressed! I’ve always said that the fried items at MBC are super greasy and this chicken was no exception. They were pretty gross and even the waffle was saturated in oil – yuck! I thought the salted chili was a cute substitute for the traditional hot sauce, but nothing could hide or counteract the overall greasiness of this dish.

Porkivore – Sushirrito

Porkivore - Sushirrito
Oven-roasted pork belly, shaved cabbage, red radish, avocado, cilantro, mustard seed mayo. $9.50
Sushirrito, San Francisco CA

These sushi burritos are super popular during lunchtime in the Financial District/SoMa. I think they’re delicious but it’s also a lot of rice and I’m trying to cut back on carbs (I need to maintain my trim figure, lol). I’ve tried several varieties now and I liked this Porkivore. The pork belly was delicious and the mustard seed mayo was a good sauce accompaniment especially with added hot sauce. Noms!

Ceviche trio – Fresca

Ceviche trio - Fresca
Ceviche Mixto: catch of the day, calamari, shrimp, scallops, cilantro, onion, rocoto, lime juice.
Ceviche de Coco: ahi tuna, lime, coconut juice, rocoto, scallions, cashews, jicama, fresno chile.
Ceviche Pasion: salmon, passion fruit, red onion, yellow pepper, cilantro, purple corn.
Served with Peruvian bar snacks. $16
Fresca, San Francisco CA

I love getting the trio (or quarto) at Fresca because you get to try a variety of their ceviches and the price is great. This time around, I really liked the mixto. It’s the most traditional one, but I really just liked the flavors. I was surprised by the ceviche passion with it’s passion fruit dressing. It tasted pretty good!

Plantain chips - Fresca
Plantain chips. $5
I think it’s kinda lame that you have to pay for plantain chips. They should just give you less and make it complimentary.

Bbq pork belly – 1760

Bbq pork belly - 1760
Cole slaw, purple potato salad, pickled red onion, carrot, pea shoot. $21
1760, San Francisco CA

This tasted good, but I think it was overpriced for the portion. I also think that the sour/tart flavors dominated the dish and I hoped for more luscious bbq flavors to rise through. The purple potato salad wasn’t my favorite thing either. I’ve had purple potato salad before but they had better flavor and texture than this one by 1760. Overall, I kinda think that this restaurant is overrated. There were more missteps than successes during this meal.

Prosecco di Valdobbiadene - 1760
