Breakfast tacos – Rebel Kitchen

Breakfast tacos - Rebel Kitchen
Eggs over medium, ham, and cheese on corn tortillas topped with salsa. $7.85
Rebel Kitchen, Kealakekua HI

Mmm, everything I like served as a breakfast taco! This was delicious and I love the slightly runny eggs!

Korean steak street tacos – Duke’s Waikiki

Korean steak street tacos - Duke's Waikiki
Kochujan marinated steak, salsa verde, lettuce, onions, cilantro, flour tortillas. $12.95
Duke’s Waikiki, Honolulu HI

These tacos had a lot of flavor, but they were definitely on the salty side. Perhaps the steak was over-marinated or something. I loved the pickled side though!

Chicken crisp burrito combo – Taco Time

Chicken crisp burrito - Taco Time
All-white chicken, cream cheese, mild green chiles, onions and spices hand-rolled in a soft flour tortilla, then deep-fried to golden perfection. Includes a 22 oz drink and small Mexi-Fries.
Taco Time, Seattle WA

OK, I’ll admit it – I’m obsessed with the chicken crisp burrito! I have to go to Taco Time during every Seattle visit and have one. It’s really sad, but I can’t deny with guilty indulgence.

Mexi-Fries - Taco Time
Mexi-Fries. OK, they’re really just tater tots with a bunch of salt and “Mexican” spices, lol! They are fickin’ addicting though!

Special hot sauce - Taco Time
Special hot sauce. This sauce is like crack! I douse everything in this sauce it’s SO good.

Chorizo sausage scramble – Portage Bay Cafe

Chorizo sausage scramble - Portage Bay Cafe
House-made chorizo sauasage, organic bell peppers and tomatoes scrambled with three eggs and topped with queso fresco, sour cream, homemade slasa and fresh green onion. Served with a warmed flour tortilla instead of toast. $14
Portage Bay Cafe, Seattle WA

This place was packed with a line out the door! Thank goodness we had reservations. I don’t completely agree why this place is super popular though. I get that they use fresh, mostly healthy ingredients but their preparations aren’t anything special. I expected a little bit more considering their shear popularity. The food was good, but I thought it was overpriced for what it was. And the service was random and slow at times.

Huevos rancheros – Circa 59

Huevos rancheros - Circa 59
Over medium eggs, corn tortilla, chorizo, chili verde, avocado. $14
Circa 59, Palm Springs CA

I guess Circa 59 tried to make a fancy version of huevos rancheros, but I was not impressed. The eggs came out fried and not over medium, the tortillas were super greasy and had a weird gummy texture, and the chorizo was WAY too salty. Lame! This was a brunch I wish I could take back.

Crispy fish tacos – Circa 59

Crispy fish tacos - Circa 59
Avocado, tomato, cabbage, sriracha aioli, lime. $16
Circa 59, Palm Springs CA

Wow, I can’t believe I paid $16 for what looks like a pile of barf! The crispy fish nuggets weren’t even crispy – they were super soggy as was the super greasy tortillas that surround this messy dish. I felt like a 5 year old eating the little fish bits in my tacos.

As nice as this restaurant purports to be, they sorely lack in service and food for that matter. We were seated outside without misters and for some reason the scarce waiters refused to give us any water. We had to flag down management to finally get any water. WTF!?

Peg’s glorified huevos rancheros – Peg’s Glorified Ham N Eggs

Peg's glorified huevos rancheros - Peg's Glorified Ham N Eggs
Monterey skillet breakfast served with golden hash browns, pico de gallo, cabbage slaw, fresh pinto beans and warm tortillas. $8.99
Peg’s Glorified Ham N Eggs, Reno NV

I had high hopes for this place since it had SO many great Yelp reviews. Wow, were they wrong! The food was marginal at best. This breakfast platter was definitely gigantic, but I’d rather have a little bit of good food than a large pile of crappy food. The eggs were cooked all the way through, the hash browns were also overdone and hard, and the beans were flavorless. Lame, a major disappointment! At least the cantaloupe was sweet.

Tacos Chava’s – Chava’s Restaurant

Tacos Chava's - Chava's Restaurant
Beef, bell pepper, onion, tomato, and mushroom. Served with rice and refried beans. $8.75
Chava’s Restaurant, San Francisco CA

Ugh, this was the first time I’ve been here and I wasn’t impressed. The beef was super chewy and the whole thing just had a weird flavor. You should never name a dish after your restaurant if it isn’t very good. 😦

Pollo burrito – El Farolito

Pollo burrito - El Farolito
Grilled chicken, rice, beans, salsa. Regular $5.25
El Farolito, San Francisco

I’m dumbfounded by the extreme popularity of this place! I would say that most people are too drunk after hours to realize what they’re eating or care about the questionable service, but I’ve also seen this place packed for early dinner.

The last time I ate here, my food was good but the time previous it was super salty. Again, this chicken burrito was SO salty it gave me a major headache! I’m convinced the food is on par with nearby taquerias or even below them which begs the question of why they’re so popular. The service is a completely different issue. The cooks seem to be running a mile a minute but the cashier, who also acts as the expeditor, is inevitably slow and inconsistent. I’ve had major waits for food that seems to come out willy-nilly.

I get that this place is a no-frills, no-nonsense taqueria but at least serve consistent, non-salty food and get it out in a decent amount of time. I’m over it.

Cornmeal crusted fish tacos – Starbelly

Cornmeal crusted fish tacos - Starbelly
House pickled jalapeno and radicchio slaw, mixed greens salad with goat cheese and tomatoes, pickled jalapenos, limes. $9
Starbelly, San Francisco CA

I loved the texture of the fish, but they were difficult to taste among all the other ingredients. They were nicely cooked though and not greasy at all. The salad was actually my favorite part. The tomatoes and goat cheese were delicious!

Shrimp tacos – Henry’s House

Shrimp tacos - Henry's House
Flour tortillas filled with grilled shrimp topped with a chipotle lime slaw, pico de gallo, pepperjack cheese, and sweet chili infused sour cream. $10
Henry’s House, Charleston SC

The shrimp usually comes fried, but I requested them grilled. They were OK, but what really annoyed me was that they were supposed to be half-off for happy hour but we were still charged full price. Super lame! I guess it was also pointless to order the shrimp grilled since the tacos are covered in sour cream anyway.

Fleet Landing Restaurant, Concord Street
Fleet Landing Restaurant, Concord Street. I haven’t been here yet, but would like to since it’s one of the few waterfront restaurants in downtown. People seem to enjoy their shrimp and grits as well as the fried green tomatoes.
