Spicy grilled catfish – Cracker Barrel

Spicy grilled catfish - Cracker Barrel
Two farm-raised catfish fillets, macaroni n’ cheese and country green beans. $9.69
Cracker Barrel Restaurant, North Charleston SC

Oh well for my attempt to order something healthy. These catfish fillets were pan fried in LOTS of butter. They tasted good, but I really wasn’t in the mood for another heavy meal. I can’t pass up mac & cheese though! This version was pretty good!

Turnip greens - Cracker Barrel
Turnip greens with pork bits.

Corn muffins - Cracker Barrel
Made-from-scratch corn muffins and butter.

Sampler dinner – Captain D’s

Untitled
Classic batter dipped fish with 2 buttermilk breaded chicken tenders, 2 premium breaded shrimp, hush puppies, macaroni & cheese, and steamed broccoli. $5.28
Captain D’s Seafood Kitchen, North Charleston SC

Be still my heart and clogged arteries! This was A LOT of fried food, but I did get steamed broccoli so that makes it all ok, right? LOL! This plate was a mess. The fish was super greasy, the chicken strips and shrimp were super dry, and the broccoli was mushy. I did like the mac & cheese though.

Crab cakes, East Coast vs. West Coast – Jake’s on Market

Crab cakes - Jake's on Market
Fresh Maryland blue crab cake with Old Bay aioli. Fresh local dungeness crab cake with Meyer lemon aioli. Mixed green salad with citrus. $14.50
Jake’s on Market, San Francisco CA

I hate to say it, but I liked the East Coast crab cake better. They tasted SO different from each other but I was craving something comforting that night and the East Coast cake had a deeper, fuller flavor. The West Coast crab cake definitely tasted more clean and refreshing.

Bread and butter - Jake's on Market
Bread and butter. Complimentary.

Layers of homes on Roosevelt Way. I like how the buildings appeared stacked from this angle.

Flying fish and cou cou – Waterfront Cafe

Flying fish and cou cou Waterfront Cafe
Three fillets of fish steamed in a Caribbean fish broth. Served with cornmeal cou cou, fried plantain, and pickled cucumber. $48 (Barbados dollar)
Waterfront Cafe, Bridgetown, BARBADOS

The extras were better than the fish, lol! But you really can’t complain about pickled cucumbers and fried plantains. The flying fish, on the other hand, had a really strong fishy taste – not my thing. Great presentation though.

Independence Arch
Independence Arch at the end of the historic Chamberlain Bridge in Bridgetown. At the base of this colorful arch, there is The Pledge which reads, “I pledge allegiance to my country Barbados and to my flag to uphold and defend their honour and by my living to do credit to my nation wherever I go.” Pretty cool stuff.

Caribbean crab cake – Waterfront Cafe

Caribbean crab cake Waterfront Cafe
Blended with potato and herbs, lightly crisped on the griddle with creamy horseradish sauce. $30 (Barbados dollar)
Waterfront Cafe, Bridgetown, BARBADOS

Simple, tender, and tasty! I think this was the first time I’ve had a crab cake paired with a horseradish sauce, but it totally worked.

St. John's Church cemetery
Cemetery behind St. John’s Church. I don’t know who first decided to plant Plumeria trees in tropical cemeteries, but I think they’re a perfect choice! These deciduous trees look sad and creepy when bare, but provide vibrancy and color when in bloom.

Bajan fish balls – Waterfront Cafe

Bajan fish balls Waterfront Cafe
Salted cod, potato and fresh herbs deep-fried golden with aioli dipping sauce. Part of “Tapas for Two” $64 (Barbados dollar)
Waterfront Cafe, Bridgetown, BARBADOS

These were very good! The fish balls were warm and flavorful, and even better dipped in the aioli. The appetizer sampler definitely had a lot of fried items, but who cares!? We’re on vacation, right!

Waterfront Cafe boardwalk
This was the view from our boardwalk table at the Waterfront Cafe. The restaurant is ideally situated along the Constitution River beside these parked fishing boats. Super convenient, and awesome food and drinks!

Bul jol spread – Waterfront Cafe

Bul jol spread Waterfront Cafe

Classic salted codfish salad, blended with lime, oil and fresh thyme. Served with baguette slices. Part of “Tapas for Two” $64 (Barbados dollar)
Waterfront Cafe, Bridgetown, BARBADOS

This wasn’t my favorite. It wasn’t bad tasting, but salted codfish is definitely an acquired taste. I did enjoy the light airy texture of the spread.

Royal Clipper
This was a pretty cool looking 5-masted ship called the Royal Clipper docked at the cruise ship terminal.

The Sizzler – BB’s Crabback

Conch BB's Crabback
(Lambi) Conch meat with BB’s own seasoning, served sizzling with a freshly-made bake (roll) and sliced cucumber, tomato, and citrus. $36 (East Caribbean dollar)
BB’s Crabback, St. Georges, GRENADA

Conch BB's Crabback
I definitely wanted to try conch during this trip to the Caribbean. I really liked this dish, but I’m not sure that I could really appreciate the conch. The seasonings were tasty, but I couldn’t taste the true conch flavor. Since I’ve never had it and don’t know much about how it’s supposed to be cooked, perhaps conch is one of those proteins that’s best suited for aggressive preparations. If that’s the case, BB’s Crabback certainly succeeded. It was noms, regardless.

St. Georges, Grenada
View of St. Georges, Grenada and towards the north. The morning started out cloudy and overcast, but as the day progressed the sun came out and warmth permeated throughout.

Grilled snapper collar – Locanda

Grilled snapper collar Locanda

Cavolo nero, olives, white beans. $22
Locanda, San Francisco

This was SO good! The fish was perfectly grilled and the flavor combination was new to me. I loved the cavolo nero with the olives and white beans. A very hearty dish and beautifully executed. Cavolo nero is also known as black cabbage, Tuscan cabbage, Tuscan kale, lacinato, and dinosaur kale. I’m guessing that they used it to make the green broth.

Pan fried seafood pot stickers – Wang’s in the Desert

Project 365: Day 85

Another ho-hum day at work. I had a great workout afterward, then swung by Dinosaurs for a banh mi sandwich before grabbing the J Muni back home. The prices were SO cheap there that I bought an extra sandwich to bring to lunch tomorrow. They were very tasty! Pics to come once I’m caught up, lol!

Pan fried seafood pot stickers Wang's in the Desert

Shrimp and scallops with water chestnuts and scallions (4 pieces). Served with a ginger soy dipping sauce. $10
Wang’s in the Desert, Palm Springs CA

These pot stickers looked promising on the menu, but they were a little dry and dense. I really wasn’t all that impress with the food at Wang’s overall. Their happy hour is a lot more fun and a better value than their actual dinner.

Hecho roll – Hecho

Project 365: Day 67

I had to work half a day this morning and the anticipation for my Caribbean vacation is hitting me hard! After my French Laundry meal last night (I’ll try to get those uploaded asap), I’m not feeling so hot in the body image department. Oh well, not much I can do now. I’m hitting the gym this evening and probably tomorrow night as a final attempt to tone up. Lol!

Hecho roll Hecho

Spicy tuna with albacore and pico de gallo. $16
Hecho, San Francisco

I enjoyed this roll. The fresh salsa on top was a nice surprise. Kind of expensive though.

Walu nigiri – Hecho

Project 365: Day 66

This is the day I went to French Laundry in Yountville. It was an 8:45 dinner reservation so I drove all the way up and had to drive back to the city afterward because I had to work the next morning. My friend has a Per Se connection so we received spectacular service and extra food, heck yeah! We were in and out of the restaurant in 5 hours! Previously, my longest dinner was 4 hours at Mistral Kitchen in Seattle. Dinner was amazing and I can’t wait to go back!

Walu nigiri Hecho

Hawaiian butterfish. $6
Hecho, San Francisco

This was definitely a buttery fish, SO good! I have to say that overall, Hecho is a bit overpriced though.

Edamame Hecho

Edamame, boiled soy beans. $5
