Mimi’s fried chicken dinner – Hutch Bar & Kitchen

Mimi's fried chicken dinner - Hutch Bar & Kitchen
Steamed rice, sherry herb gravy, buttermilk biscuits, squash casserole. Per person $20
Hutch Bar & Kitchen, Oakland CA

Omg, talk about value – there was so much food on this plate for 2 people! We definitely took a lot of this home. The chicken was really good, and I was really happy about the steamed rice. It had a soft consistency almost liked mashed potatoes and tasted great with the sherry herb gravy. The squash casserole was really salty so it wasn’t my favorite. The biscuit tasted good, but were on the hard, dense side.

Crispy chicken fillet – McDonald’s

Crispy chicken fillet - McDonald's
Served with rice and gravy. 60 PHP
McDonald’s, Boracay PHILIPPINES

Lol, this is how I like my McDonald’s chicken – served with gravy and rice! This will never happen in the States, but it really should. I mean fast food is super unhealthy already in the US, why not add a side of gravy, lol! For real though, this was delicious. 🙂

Soy sauce flavor spicy ramen – Ramen Dojo

Soy sauce flavor spicy ramen - Ramen Dojo
Roasted pork, fried whole garlic, kikurage mushroom, fresh green chives, quail egg, and chicken gravy (cooked ground chicken, chopped shiitake mushroom, chopped ginger, sesame oil, shredded red pepper). Ordered with extra pork and regular spicy. $11.25
Ramen Dojo, San Mateo CA

I’ve been on a ramen kick lately and this place has been one of the best I’ve visited! The soup is delicious and the chicken gravy is amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever had ramen where I’ve really noticed the chicken gravy before. It had an awesome chunky consistency and packed a lot of flavor. Maybe the gravy, if ever present before, was just been mixed into the soup at other restaurants. I’m not sure, but I feel like I’ve been missing out until now. Noms!

Ramen Dojo, San Mateo CA

Wow, this was some of the best ramen I’ve had in a while! The broth was delicious and the “regular spicy” level was perfect. I think “extra spicy” would have been too much and the additional heat would have detracted from the flavor of the broth. You’d spend all your time sweating rather than enjoying the ramen. The “regular spicy” level was actually pretty spicy already! The pork was very flavorful and had a good amount of fat on it. Yum!

Breakfast poutine – The Coterie Room

Breakfast poutine - The Coterie Room
Country gravy, fried cheese curd, french fried potato, tender herbs, fried egg. $13
The Coterie Room, Seattle WA

Wow, this was really delicious! All the flavors were great and I loved the addition of the sunny side up egg on top. I wish I could eat this more often, but then I’d have to buy larger clothes. 😉

Fried chicken – Town Hall

Buffalo fried chicken - Town Hall
Buffalo fried chicken (Sunday BBQ special), jambalaya(?). $23
Town Hall, San Francisco CA

Um, this wasn’t a successful dish. It had a weird flavor (and not very Buffalo-y tasting either), and the crust was soggy. Maybe they fried the chicken pieces first then tossed them in a Buffalo sauce, but by the time they made it to our table the sauce had soaked through the batter. The sides were also forgettable because I don’t even remember what they were and I can’t tell from the pic. I think one of them was a jambalaya though.

Mary's buttermilk fried chicken - Town Hall
Mary’s buttermilk fried chicken, smashed potatoes, corn maque choux, bacon gravy. $25 (comped)

So this dish was comped because the kitchen had overcooked the first batch and didn’t want to serve it. I can respect a kitchen (or management) that refuses to serve mis-cooked food, bravo. But I felt REALLY bad for my roommate who had to wait while everyone else ate their entrees because fried chicken takes a long time (he was birthday boy). When it came out, this batch also seemed overcooked so I’m not sure it was worth the wait. The batter was bland but it was at least crispy. I was not a fan of this dish overall. (The fried chicken at Wayfare Tavern is WAY better.)

Crawfish and bacon poutine – Fins on the Hoof

Crawfish and bacon poutine - Fins on the Hoof
Fresh cut fries, crawfish and house-cured bacon gravy, cheese curds, peas, spring onions. $10
Fins on the Hoof, San Francisco CA

Omg, this was delicious! The fries were crispy and well-cooked and the toppings were amazing. This had so much flavor and I initially thought that it would be super heavy and gross, but it actually wasn’t! The large fluffy cheese curds along with the peas and scallions helped to break up the fried ingredients and gravy. It was a great well-balanced poutine. I want some more!

Mixed sausages plate – Paprika

Mixed sausages plate - Paprika
Grilled Hungarian sweet sausage and Swiss bockwurst with mashed potatoes and homemade gravy, onions, cornichons, sauerkraut, and condiments. $13.50
Paprika, San Francisco CA

This was a really fun and delicious plate! I enjoyed both of the sausages and I liked how they were scored along their lengths and split on the ends. The added texture allowed for more grill marks on their surfaces which I loved. The mashed potatoes were good and I loved their Eastern European style gravy. It had lots of flavor. The accompaniments made it really fun to eat and to mixed and match all the different flavors. Noms!

Roast chicken with gravy – United Airlines

Roast chicken with gravy - United Airlines
Served with potatoes, carrots, green beans, side salad, dinner roll, and cream crackers.
London (LHR) to San Francisco (SFO), United Airlines

The chicken doesn’t look very appetizing, but it was actually palatable with the salty gravy on top. The carrots and beans were way overcooked and had the consistency of soft food for the elderly. I’m not a salad person so I just picked at a few lettuce leaves. This was another underwhelming dinner service from United Airlines. Please, let me fly first class next time!

Lamb meatballs with gravy

Lamb meatballs with gravy
Served with hummus and white rice.
Sitges ES

Mmm, I love lamb meatballs. And these were covered in a yummy gravy, score! The meatballs were tender and super flavorful, and the gravy tasted great with the rice and even the hummus.

Loco moco – L&L Hawaiian Barbecue

Loco moco - L&L Hawaiian Barbecue
Savory hamburger patty placed over rice, covered with brown gravy and topped with 1 egg over easy. Served with macaroni salad. Mini $5.75
L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, Millbrae CA

OMG, I love loco moco! I justify ordering this by saying that at least I only buy the mini size instead of the regular, lol. L&L’s version is great and comforting. I also love their macaroni salad so it’s a win-win!

Country fried steak – Escena Lounge & Grill

Country fried steak - Escena Lounge & Grill
Hand-hammered cutlet, two eggs over medium, country gravy, toast and breakfast potatoes. $14
Escena Lounge & Grill, Palm Springs CA

OMG, this cutlet was ridiculously HUGE! I can usually eat A LOT, but I couldn’t even begin to finish this thing, lol. It was pretty good, maybe a bit on the dry side, but the gravy and breading were flavorful. I think my heart is screaming from the sight of this again, hehe.
