Basil tilapia – Basil Thai Restaurant

Basil tilapia - Basil Thai Restaurant
Lightly floured, deep fried tilapia fillets, topped with vegetables, stir-fry sauce, side of carrots, cabbage, and lettuce. $16.95
Basil Thai Restaurant, Charleston SC

Mmm, this was very tasty! Having traveled through Thailand, I think I can say that this wasn’t authentic Thai food, but it certainly had a lot of flavor and was nicely prepared.

General Homeboy & Blackened mahi tacos – Taco Mamacita

General Homeboy & Blackened Mahi tacos - Taco Mamacita
Any two tacos and a side $8.99
General Homeboy (on right): panko breaded shrimp with a sweet Thai chili sauce, shredded cabbage, sliced radish, green onion and cilantro, served spicy. Side of Mexican street corn.
Taco Mamacita, Sullivan’s Island SC

General Homeboy & Blackened Mahi tacos - Taco Mamacita
Blackened Mahi (on left): grilled blackened mahi mahi with jalapeno corn slaw, grilled pineapple, cilantro, diced tomatoes and baja sauce.

After eating many tacos from The Mission (SF), I will say that these weren’t authentic at all (which is fine). They were, however, on the small side and lacked bold flavors considering the ingredients used. I’m used to tacos that are overflowing with meats and toppings, and while these tacos tasted OK, I’ll have to say that the flavors at The Taco Spot were better. On a more positive note, the Mexican street corn was delicious!

Mimosa – Crave

Mimosa - Crave

Ka lai cocktail – Basil Thai Restaurant

Ka lai cocktail - Basil Thai Restaurant

Svedka citron vodka, chambord, strawberry puree, prosecco. $9
Basil Thai Restaurant, Charleston SC

Ugh, this cocktail was way too sour. I thought the chambord and strawberry puree would mellow it out a little, but that wasn’t the case. I like the idea of the cocktail, but I don’t think it was executed properly. It looked beautiful though!

Cannon, Fort Moultrie
Cannon, Fort Moultrie. I really enjoyed walking the grounds of Fort Moultrie and seeing the large, heavy cannons and learning how the fort has been used through history.

Flash downpour - Tabbuli
When we started dinner, the evening was warm and pleasant until a flash downpour occurred. Everyone ran from the patio tables to seek shelter under the roof. I thought it was kinda fun!

Berry sangria – Taco Mamacita

Berry sangria - Taco Mamacita
Only available on Sundays. Carafe $7.50
Taco Mamacita, Sullivan’s Island SC

Yum, this was really tasty and oh so refreshing for a lazy Sunday. I liked that they used this crushed ice because it gave the sangria a consistency similar to an Icee. The berry flavor was also really nice, double-yum!

Sullivan's Island beach
Sullivan’s Island beach. The beach here was really odd to me – it was very different from the beaches I’m used to in California. The sand was hard and packed down and it was super windy. Apparently, it’s dangerous to go into the water after a storm because of all the jellyfish that become washed up close to shore.

Rustic skillet – Crave

Rustic skillet - Crave
Country ham, red bliss potato hash, caramelized onion, roasted red bell peppers, all sauteed together served with scrambled eggs and topped with black pepper gravy. Includes corn bread muffins, fresh fruit, and coffee. $11
Crave, Mount Pleasant SC

Argh, this looked SO good on the menu but it was SO frickin’ salty! And you know it’s gotta be super salty if I’m complaining because I’m usually a total salt monger. The ham and the gravy were the saltiest coomponents, but after a while everything just tasted salty and I had to stop eating.

Cornbread muffin - Crave
Cornbread muffin with butter. Mmm, these were SO delicous, warm, and fluffy!

Fried wontons – Basil Thai Restaurant

How can you go wrong with hot, fried wontons filled with proteins and cream cheese?! You really can’t, hehe. This appetizer is perfect for sharing and definitely starts a dinner off on the right foot.
