Green chives pancake – Dumpling Empire

Green chives pancake - Dumpling Empire
Fried Chinese pancake filled with green chives, glass noodles, and egg. $5.95
Dumpling Empire, South San Francisco CA

I liked the flavor of these pancakes, but the outsides were on the greasy side. I love the sharpness of the Chinese chives though. They also give you two whole pancakes so it’s a good value.

Chicken pad thai – Sweet Basil Thai Cuisine

Chicken pad thai - Sweet Basil Thai Cuisine
Sliced chicken breast, fried tofu, ground peanuts, rice noodle, sprouts, egg, ordered “hot”. $8.50
Sweet Basil Thai Cuisine, San Francisco CA

I love that Sweet Basil Thai actually packs some heat in their dishes. Other Thai restaurant promise heat, but don’t usually deliver. I think they’re afraid they’ll blow out most Americans’ tastebuds. I’ve spent over a month in Thailand and the food is REALLY hot so I can understand their caution. This pad thai was delicious and spicy. It didn’t get me sweating, but it had some welcomed heat after so many bland dishes elsewhere.

Chicken mole super nachos – La Tortilla

Chicken mole super nachos - La Tortilla
Tortilla chips topped with shredded chicken in mole sauce, black beans, cheese, spicy salsa, guacamole and sour cream. $7.75
La Tortilla, San Francisco

I love the nachos at La Tortilla. Not because they’re particularly amazing or special, but because they’re so saucy and huge and packed with tons of flavor (and a great value). I really can’t ask for more at this price. Great job, La Tortilla!

String bean beef – Red Jade

String bean beef - Red Jade
This dish was pretty tasty and not too greasy. I liked how they used larger cuts of beef so that they’re still recognizable as such. The beef was also properly cut in cross section for ease of chewing. And the was plenty of flavorful string beans. $8.95
Red Jade, San Francisco CA

Schmaltz rice – Mission Chinese Food

Schmaltz rice - Mission Chinese Food
Dressed in chicken fat, with cucumber, cilantro, ginger, green onion, fried garlic and hot sauce. $7.50
Mission Chinese Food, San Francisco CA

Ok, how can rice cooked with chicken fat not be simply amazing?! This was SO tasty. The rice had a softer texture with the fatty dressing and a lot more flavor. I can confirm that this rice had no chance and was quickly devoured!

Prawn shui mai and King crab Shanghai siew long bun - Yauatcha
Shu mai with chicken, xiao long bao with pork. A Taste of Yauatcha menu £28.88 for 2 people
Yauatcha, London ENGLAND

Noms, these were SO tasty! I don’t think I’ve ever had Shanghai soup dumplings with crab in them, and they didn’t break, yay! Even the shu mai was fancy with large chunks of prawn and chicken. Mmm, I’m craving dim sum now. 🙂

General Tso’s spicy boneless chicken – Red Jade

April 20, 2015. $8.95

General Tso's spicy boneless chicken - Red Jade
Requested using only white meat chicken. $9.50
Red Jade, San Francisco CA

I love General Tso’s chicken (depending on the restaurant). It’s deep fried chicken goodness usually covered in a sweet, spicy sauce. Red Jade’s version isn’t too heavily breaded so you can still see the pieces of chicken inside, and their sauce it pretty tasty!

Beef with oyster sauce – Tuk Tuk Noodle Bar

Beef with oyster sauce - Tuk Tuk Noodle Bar
Sauteed beef with mushroom, onion, bamboo shoot, carrot, and green onion. Set Menu A £11.80 per person
Tuk Tuk Noodle Bar, London ENGLAND

Ugh, another throw-away dish from Tuk Tuk. The beef quality was bad and the sauce was plain and boring. There was plenty to go around though!

Szechuan eggplant with minced pork – Red Jade

Szechuan eggplant with minced pork - Red Jade
Onion, garlic, bamboo shoot, green onion. $8.50
Red Jade, San Francisco CA

I know this looks really oily in the pic, but it actually wasn’t that bad. I think the lighting is misleading. I love eggplant dishes at Chinese restaurants and this was pretty tasty. The sauce was garlicky and delicious and the eggplants were nicely prepared. Noms!

Chicken green curry – Tuk Tuk Noodle Bar

Chicken green curry - Tuk Tuk Noodle Bar
Spicy curry with green chilies, coconut milk, bamboo shoots, Thai aubergines and lime leaves. Set Menu A £11.80 per person
Tuk Tuk Noodle Bar, London ENGLAND

Yuck, this green curry was gross! It had a thick, gloppy consistency and was utterly unappetizing. There was also an odd bitter taste that I couldn’t figure out. Definitely one of the worst Thai curries I’ve tasted.

Har gau and Steamed special fen guo dumplings – Yauatcha

Har gau and Steamed special fen guo dumplings - Yauatcha
A Taste of Yauatcha menu £28.88 for 2 people
Yauatcha, London ENGLAND

These were more your typical dim sum dumpling items so this steam tray was more familiar than the others (and maybe a little more boring). The two kinds of dumplings were actually really good though. The har gow is a tried and true standard. I’m not completely sure what all was in the fen guo dumpling, but I would guess it was a mixture of pork, shrimp, garlic chives, mushrooms and peanuts.
