Crispy duck leg cassoulet – Town Hall

Crispy duck leg cassoulet - Town Hall
Butter beans, chorizo, farm egg, Italian parsley, grilled bread. $25
Town Hall, San Francisco CA

Oops, I guess you really can’t see the duck, but I swear it’s in there under the farm egg. This dish had good flavors, but it was salty. I think the presence of duck confit and chorizo really upped the saltiness from the start, but I swear they must have added even MORE salt because there was too much! At twenty five bucks for this bowl, I think the execution could have been better.

Power poach – Grange Restaurant

Power poach - Grange Restaurant
Two eggs, whole wheat toast, apple wood smoked bacon, fresh fruit. $13
Grange Restaurant, Sacramento CA

Omg, the guy running the host desk was HORRIBLE! I walked in to a barely seated restaurant during breakfast service and he was way too busy on the phone. He made eye contact with me and kept talking, and even switching from the phone at the bar to the phone at the host desk. I’m literally just standing there watching him for almost 10 minutes. Some sweet busser finally had to come over and offer to seat me! And my waiter even apologized that I had to wait forever to get seated. How can an entire restaurant know that someone is waiting WAY too long to get seated and the clueless, idiot host doesn’t?!? This boggles my mind. I don’t make it so Sacramento very often, but if this is their idea of fine service I’ll stick to San Francisco thank you very much. Btw, my power poach was boring and bland.

Emirates Team NZ chellenger burger – Waiheke Island Yacht Club

Emirates Team NZ chellenger burger - Waiheke Island Yacht Club
100% NZ beef and lamb, smoked tomato chutney, beets, lettuce, kikorangi blue cheese and egg. $15
Waiheke Island Yacht Club, San Francisco CA

Omg, this burger was killer! If this is what all New Zealand burgers are like, I need to visit NZ soon! The patty was juicy and flavorful, and all the toppings were delicious. The burger was huge so I just rolled up my sleeves and got down and dirty with it. I don’t care what anybody say, but I’m a fan of eggs on burgers and this sunny side up egg was a thing of beauty. I was also delighted by the kikorangi blue cheese which I’d never had before. It was spread on the top bun and I initially thought that it was some kind of decadent pate spread because it was so rich and delicious, NOMS!

Faith’s warm ham and cheese toast – Town Hall

Faith's warm ham and cheese toast - Town Hall
Poached egg, jalapeno cream. $14
Town Hall, San Francisco CA

Omg, this appetizer was a meal by itself! And a delicious one at that, but you certainly can’t have more food after this dish. It’s super heavy and filled with fatty goodness. You are not warned on the menu, but it also comes with 3 jalapeno poppers, lol! The jalapeno cream sauce is frickin’ delicious and the poached egg is great after it’s broken and mixes with the cream sauce. This dish is like a fancy croque madame gone crazy! (But a good kinda crazy.) Noms!

Butter basted eggs – Nopa

Butter basted eggs - Nopa
Broccoli de ciccio, green beans, soft polenta and parmesan. $14
Nopa, San Francisco CA

This was pretty tasty and I loved the smoky flavor of the roasted broccoli, but there really wasn’t much food in this little bowl. I was still hungry after eating this especially after the wait to get seated and then to receive the actual food. Perhaps they could considering adding a bit more food in the future because this wasn’t very satisfying.

Chitarra bachata – Roxy’s Cafe

Chitarra bachata - Roxy's Cafe
Sweet plantain chitarra noodles, chorizo and fresh farm hen egg sauce, cheese and flower garnish. 10-course chef’s tasting menu $75
Roxy’s Cafe, San Francisco CA

I guess that chitarra is a type of pasta cutter and not a Thundercat (I learn something new every day!), so these were definitely homemade noodles. The noodles had an interesting, soft texture that I quite enjoyed and the chorizo was delicious. I thought this was very inventive, but what do I know… 🙂

Cocktails – Figo

Rosso di Sera cocktail - Figo
Rosso di Sera: Bulleit, aperol, grenadine, lemon, egg white emulsion, mint sprig.
Figo, Palo Alto CA

We were killing time before meeting some friends for dinner so we slipped into Figo for a couple cocktails. These were well-made and I loved that they used huge, singular ice cubes. My kinda place!

Judy Joe scram – Judy’s Cafe

Judy Joe scram - Judy's Cafe
Two scrambled eggs, spinach, ground chuck, onion and mushroom, served with homefried potatoes and 9-grain wheat toast. $13
Judy’s Cafe, San Francisco CA

Another huge scramble from Judy’s Café. They jam-pack the ingredients into their scrams so it’s mostly filling than egg. I don’t mind one bit! 🙂

Pickled egg and anchovy – Roxy’s Cafe

Pickled egg and anchovy - Roxy's Cafe
Shishito pepper, bulgur wheat, sprouts. 10-course chef’s tasting menu $75
Roxy’s Cafe, San Francisco CA

Mmm, I love pickled food items! I really enjoyed all the flavors in this dish. The bulgur wheat was a little hard to chew, but I liked that its mellow flavor helped to tone down the acidity of the pickled egg and anchovy. And of course you all know that I love shishito peppers! I’m not quite sure what the pale condiment was because it had a very subtle taste that I couldn’t figure out. This dish was beautiful and tasty!

Denver scram – Judy’s Cafe

Denver scram - Judy's Cafe
Two eggs scrambled with diced ham, onion, bell pepper, served with homefried potatoes and 9-grain wheat toast. $12
Judy’s Cafe, San Francisco CA

We came across this busy brunch spot in the Marina because another restaurant we were planning on eating at was closed. The menu items were pretty basic and standard fare. The Denver scramble was ok. There was A LOT of it so you definitely got your money’s worth. The potatoes were delicious though and I couldn’t stop eating them! They were soft and tender and super flavorful. The service, on the other hand, was sporadic, confused and difficult to flag down.

Green chives pancake – Dumpling Empire

Green chives pancake - Dumpling Empire
Fried Chinese pancake filled with green chives, glass noodles, and egg. $5.95
Dumpling Empire, South San Francisco CA

I liked the flavor of these pancakes, but the outsides were on the greasy side. I love the sharpness of the Chinese chives though. They also give you two whole pancakes so it’s a good value.

Scrambled eggs and bacon – Patisserie Valerie

Scrambled eggs and bacon - Patisserie Valerie
Two eggs with bacon on granary toast. £6.70
Patisserie Valerie, London ENGLAND

The scrambled eggs tasted better than most of the scrambles I’ve had in Europe, but it was still that weird crumbly, somehow boiled kind of scramble that I’m not used to. Who knew there were so many ways to make basic scrambled eggs? 🙂 The bacon was tasty and I’m a fan of granary bread now! I’d never had this kind of bread before as far as I know, but I liked the light airy texture of it.
