Espresso shot – Blue Bottle Coffee Mobile Kiosk

Project 365: Day 23

My bicep was still hurting this morning. I started noticing it yesterday so I didn’t do any arm exercises at the gym today. I hope I didn’t tear it or anything!

It was also very difficult getting out of bed. It’s Friday and the prospect of the weekend was so soothing that I wanted to just stay in bed and wait for it to begin. Alas, I got up and started my day. Baby Girl needed to be taken outside and fed anyway, lol!

Hoping that work flies by today. Going straight home afterward and getting some laundry done. I also need to start cleaning the apartment for my work party tomorrow night. So excited about it, but also dreading the work that’s got to happen before it can happen. LOTS of cleaning!

Espresso Blue Bottle Coffee Mobile Kiosk

Shot of espresso. $2.50
Blue Bottle Coffee Mobile Kiosk, San Francisco

This shot of espresso was a little sour to me! It didn’t have the depth of flavor that I expect in an espresso shot. I do love supporting Blue Bottle though and their coffee cart is convenient located near my gym. GCW – gym, coffee, work. 🙂  Rapunzel was chatting about Jersey Shore yesterday so now it’s stuck in my head. I called her a grenadine – that was kinda funny!

Irish coffee – The Buena Vista

Irish coffee The Buena Vista

Whiskey, coffee, sugar, whipping cream. $7.50
The Buena Vista, San Francisco

This place claims that the Irish coffee was first introduced to the United States at this very spot by Stanton Delaplane. I like to think that this is true because stuff like that is kinda fun. The place is SO touristy, but has a cheesy quirky charm that I can appreciate.

The Irish coffee was very good! I can’t say that I have them often, but the combination of whiskey and coffee with the topping of cream has a soothing quality about it. The bartender was a no-nonsense and efficient older gentleman. The place was surprisingly calming despite the hordes of tourists!

This is what is inscribed on one of their displays next to the bar counter:

How To Make The Perfect Buena Vista Irish Coffee

1. Preheat 6 oz glass with hot water and empty
2. Drop in two sugar cubes
3. Pour hot coffee into hot glass until it is about three quarters full. Stir until the sugar is thoroughly dissolved
4. Add full jigger of Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey
5. Top with a collar of lightly whipped whipping cream by pouring gently over a spoon. Enjoy while piping hot!

"Mostly" organic breakfast

Project 365: Day 2

Egg sandwich

So this is what I make for breakfast pretty much every work day. Eating the same thing every morning probably sound boring, but it’s fast, delicious and mostly healthy! I’ll make a fried runny egg sandwich using a One Bun whole wheat 100 calorie bun, an organic egg, 2 slices of prosciutto, and cheese. La Quercia prosciutto is my preferred choice. I buy it at my neighborhood Whole Foods, but they sometimes run out of stock and won’t get more for over a week, lame! Then I have to buy some replacement brand. I think this one is Fiorucci – not as yummy. I rotate the cheeses depending on what’s on sale at Whole Foods. Right now I’m on a super nommy wedge of brillat savarin.

Egg sandwich and coffee

I have to have coffee in the morning! It helps wake me up and I love the taste. I buy organic coffee (different brands depending on what’s on sale) and use an organic vanilla flavored soy creamer. I’d prefer to use a milk based creamer, but none of the organic brands have a flavored option. Egg sammich + coffee = happy vicenteSF!

So I’m still feeling sick today, but I’ve decided to go into work anyway. Partly because I don’t want to use up all my sick leave and partly because Rapunzel got screwed yesterday with SO much work. I guess some other people called in sick, too. I wish I could have another day in bed to fully recover but I guess I feel well enough to at least go in and get some work done.

Philz bagel – Philz Coffee

Philz bagel Philz Coffee

Seeded wheat bagel toasted with olive oil, then spread with a light layer of cream cheese, topped with fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, then lightly sprinkled with salt. $3.25
Philz Coffee, San Francisco

This is my absolute favorite bagel breakfast sandwich EVER! I always get it on some kind of wheat bagel and ask for “light on the cream cheese” (just to be safe), hehe. It’s SO flavorful and you don’t feel gross and heavy after eating it. NOMS!

Jacob's Wonderbar Brew Philz Coffee

Jacob’s Wonderbar Brew coffee. Any of Philz coffees + Philz bagel = a perfect morning!

Mimosas – Zazie

Mimosas Zazie

La Groseille mimosa with black currant (front). $8
Corsica mimosa with fresh grapefruit juice (back). $8
Zazie, San Francisco

It seems silly to pay $8 for a glass of champagne with some juice added, but the mimosas at Zazie are super yummy!  I really liked the La Groseille.  The black currant was SO refreshing!

Coffee Zazie

Zazie’s organic specialty coffee. $2.95

Yummy "dim" dinner – Range

We had an absolutely wonderful dinner at Range on Valencia Street in the Mission. The restaurant is dimly lit so I wasn’t able to take any good food pics, but I thought I’d post these anyway for posterity, hehe. We also had the creamed nettles with a poached farm egg for an appetizer, but that pic didn’t come out at all.  Enjoy!

Pink Panther cocktail Range

Pink Panther cocktail – Tito’s vodka, pomegranate, tawny port, black pepper, lemon.
Yummy yummy cocktail and I loved the soft pink color!

Smoking Gun cocktail Range

Smoking Gun cocktail – Bulleit bourbon, maraschino, Dolin sweet vermouth, scotch rinse.
I didn’t like this cocktail as much.  I think the scotch rinse was too much for me.

Pan roasted bavette steak Range

Pan roasted bavette steak with horseradish, barley, brussels sprouts, shiitake mushrooms and baby turnips. $28
Yum!  I’m not a huge horseradish fan, but these were mild and tasted great with the perfectly cooked steak.  The brussels sprouts were yummy and the baby turnips were so frickin’ cute!

Coffee rubbed pork shoulder Range

Coffee rubbed pork shoulder with creamy hominy and braised greens. $25
Omg!  I’m hungry just recalling this dish!  The pork was so tender and juicy and the coffee rub gave it a great flavor.  The sauce was to die for and tasted SO good with the hominy and greens.  A definite winner dish!

Bostock – Four Barrel Coffee

Bostock Four Barrel Coffee

Citrus, hazelnut and almond flavors all in one amazing pastry!  I didn’t even know what this what when I bought it (they didn’t have the labels up yet that morning), but it sure tasted great.  I later learned that it’s called  a “bostock” on a return visit.  Upon researching this delicious treat, I found out that it’s traditionally made from a day-old brioche that’s soaked in an almond and orange simple syrup and topped with almond cream and sliced almonds.  After it’s baked, the edges become crisp and get an amazing caramelly flavor.  The center stays moist and buttery and the almondy top gets beautifully toasted.  The version at Four Barrel has hazelnuts instead of sliced almonds and they sprinkle it with a little powdered sugar.  NOMS!

Lemon pistachio donut – Dynamo Donuts

Lemon pistachio Dynamo Donuts

Pistachio donut with lemon zest, lemon icing and toasted pistachios. $3
Dynamo Donuts and Coffee, San Francisco

I think this is the first time I’ve ever had this flavor combination in anything, and now I’m a huge fan!  They tasted great together and the donut was simply perfect.  The sugar glaze and pistachios added a great crunch, and while the lemon flavor was less pronounce it was very good.  This donut was fluffy, light and yummy – noms!

Coffee Dynamo Donuts

Small coffee.  $2.25

Vietnamese coffee – The Slanted Door

Vietnamese coffee The Slanted Door

I decided to have a hot Vietnamese coffee during this meal, foregoing the iced version.  This was definitely a swankier version from the ones you get at your corner Pho shop.  The metal filter wasn’t beat up and they provide a pottery dish to place it on.  What I didn’t like was that the coffee had already finished dripping through the filter before it got to my table.  Part of the fun is watching it drip down.  The expeditor also stirred in the condense milk for me!  I appreciated the service but I would have preferred to do it myself.  😦  These are minor complaints though since the coffee was delicious!  $4

Vietnamese iced coffee – Turtle Tower Restaurant

Vietnamese iced coffee Turtle Tower Restaurant

Filtered coffee with condensed milk.  $2.95
Turtle Tower Restaurant, San Francisco

I love Vietnamese iced coffee!  I can’t have it often because I feel so guilty consuming that much condensed milk, but it’s a nice treat when I do.  Turtle Tower does it right!  They bring it out to your table to drip through a dented filter while you eat your meal.  Afterward, all the coffee has dripped through and you can stir to mix in the condensed milk.  Pour it over the ice and you have the perfect after-meal sweet treat!  The coffee is dark and rich, nicely balanced by the sweet milk, and its slight bitterness is diluted by the partially melted ice cubes – lol!

Pulled pork folded omelette – Ella’s

Pulled pork folded omelette Ella's

With pasilla peppers, pulled pork, corn relish, jack cheese, and chipotle crema. Served with potatoes and wheat toast.  $12.75
Ella’s – San Francisco

I thought this omelette was OK.  The filling was really runny so that turned me off from the start.  The egg also had a weird, plastic-y texture.  There is no arguing that you get your money’s worth though – it was gigantic!  It tasted fine, but I wish that the flavors had more punch.  The whole thing tasted somewhat bland.  The potatoes were just OK, too.  I definitely had to used some ketchup to add more flavor.  I have to say that my favorite part of my order was the thick wheat bread that came with it.  Is that sad?

Coffee Ella's

Cup of regular coffee.  $2.50
