Chicken tenders - Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen
Nom, noms! I love Popeyes. I crave it once in a while and have to get my fix. Their chicken tenders are much larger than those at most fast food chains and that’s probably why they cost a bit more. But they’re SO worth it!

Mashed potatoes and cajun gravy - Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen
And their mashed potatoes with cajun gravy is my absolute fast food favorite! I love the horrible-for-you-tasting gravy with the gristly bits, lol.

Crazy Coyote Tacos, Banning CA

Mmm, I love the tacos at Crazy Coyote! The fish taco is still my favorite, but it’s really about that thick corn tortilla. Noms!

Matzo ball soup – Wise Sons Jewish Delicatessen

Matzo ball soup - Wise Sons Jewish Delicatessen
Chicken noodle soup with a traditional matzo ball. $6
Wise Sons Jewish Delicatessen, San Francisco CA

I don’t think I’ve ever had matzo ball soup at a restaurant before! Kinda weird since I really like matzo ball. This version did not disappoint – it was SO good. I actually wasn’t feeling well that day and thought that eating this would perk me up. It tasted wonderful and the huge matzo ball was fun and delicious! Mission accomplished…

Wise Sons filming
They were filming something at the restaurant when I was there. The kitchen space is pretty small but you could see the owners walking around and explaining things to the camera.

Fried chicken – Eureka Restaurant and Lounge

Fried chicken - Eureka Restaurant and Lounge
With garlic mashed potatoes, collard greens, sweet potato-black eyed pea relish, and black pepper gravy. $18
Eureka Restaurant & Lounge, San Francisco CA

Fried chicken - Eureka Restaurant and Lounge
Mmm, this was pretty tasty. The fried chicken was crispy on the outside and nice and juicy on the inside. I think the sweet potato relish wasn’t needed with the garlic mashed potatoes but I appreciated the different textures. I’m also glad that they served the gravy on the side because I would have eaten it all otherwise.

Bread and butter - Eureka Restaurant and Lounge
Bread and butter. Complimentary

Pollo al horno – Sol Food

Pollo al horno - Sol Food
Free-range, wheat-free boneless, skinless chicken thighs marinated with oregano and garlic then baked. Served with rice, black beans, fried green plantain (tostones con mojo), sweet fried yellow plantain (maduros), organic salad. Two pieces $12.25
Sol Food, San Rafael CA

Wow, this chicken was REALLY flavorful especially when drowned in their addictive hot sauce! The rice, beans and salad were fine but nothing special. I definitely liked the sweet plantain better than the fried green plaintain. The green plantain was too dry and hard for my liking. You also get a lot of food for your money!

Hot sauce - Sol Food

Delicious vinegary hot sauce.

Buttermilk fried chicken – Harvey’s

Buttermilk fried chicken - Harvey's
Two large chicken breasts battered to order and deep fried, with cole slaw, mashed potato, and country gravy. $13.95
Harvey’s, San Francisco CA

Wow, this was A LOT of food! I don’t think I even started on the second chicken breast. Surprisingly, the chicken was a step above most of the food at Harvey’s although the mashed potatoes and coleslaw were of average/marginal quality. I guess Harvey’s is popular because of location.

French toast – Solaire Restaurant + Bar

Solaire Restaurant + Bar, Santa Cruz CA

These were just your standard French toast. They tasted fine but they weren’t anything special.

Chicken sausage - Solaire Restaurant + Bar

These sausages were pretty sad especially when they cost four bucks!

Condiments - Solaire Restaurant + Bar
Ketchup, maple syrup and butter.

Spicy and sweet Korean fried chicken – K-pop

Spicy and sweet Korean fried chicken - K-pop
Breaded Korean style fried chicken thighs in a spicy and sweet sauce. Served iwth daikon non-spicy kimchee and a mixed green salad with strawberry dressing. $13.95
K-pop, San Francisco CA

Ugh, this chicken was kinda yucky! I guess I did like the flavor, but the chicken itself was really weird. I don’t think there was any actual meat in the fried chunks. It almost seemed like it was all fried skin and filler. The pieces broke apart like fried chicharrones with lots of fat under the skin. I was not impressed. The best part was the daikon kimchee. I wouldn’t have minded the salad, but the strawberry dressing grossed me out. I would have preferred it undressed if they had told me that it was gonna arrive with pink goo all over it.

Chicken croquettes – Bossa Nova

Chicken croquettes - Bossa Nova
These were very interesting croquettes. The shell on these things were SO hard. It was actually really difficult to break into them with a fork and knife. The sheer hardness of it fascinated me to some extent but it was also annoying to eat. The interior was a bit bland and had an odd mushy texture.
