Hella-peno burger munchie meal – Jack in the Box

Hella-peno burger munchie meal - Jack in the Box
Beef patty topped with American cheese, stuffed jalapenos, mayo-onion sauce and ketchup on a sesame seed bun. Served with two tacos, fries and medium Diet Coke. $6
Jack in the Box, San Francisco CA

OK people, don’t judge me – LOL! We had just driven back to the city from a gala fundraiser up in Marin County where they didn’t serve very much food, so I was STARVING! We walked in and my eyes immediately fell on the promotional sign for the Hella-peno burger. I had to try it! The burger was pretty lame, but it filled me up and it came with tacos, fries and a drink – all for six bucks so I’m not gonna complain. This makes me a bad person. 🙂

Tavern burger – Stock in Trade

Tavern burger - Stock in Trade
Angus beef, aged Grafton cheddar, two fried eggs, pickles, caramelized onions, aioli, toasted Acme bun and fries. $13
Stock in Trade, San Francisco CA

This burger had a lot of flavor but it was super cold and lifeless! It was definitely a service mistake and I’m kinda surprised they served it. Damn, I would have microwaved it myself to get a bit of warmth on the plate!

Mimosas - Stock in Trade

Mimosas. This was one of the most bland mimosas I’ve ever tasted. Ew!

Enchiladas suizas – Casa Azteca

Enchiladas suizas - Casa Azteca
Two corn tortillas filled with beef, covered with a mild red chile sauce and cheese. Topped with guacamole and sour cream. Served with Spanish rice, refried beans, and tortilla soup. $12.95
Casa Azteca, Milpitas CA

This was a great value for only thirteen bucks and everything was pretty good, but all the textures on the enchilada plate were soft. I didn’t mind too much but I wish they would have thrown in something crunchy to balance things out. I think that’s why other places thrown in a small pile of that cheap iceberg lettuce “salad”. You all know what I’m talking about. The tortilla soup was also on the salty side.

Hue spicy noodle soup – PPQ Beef Noodle House

Hue spicy noodle soup - PPQ Beef Noodle House
Bun bo hue. Beef shank, pork hock, fancy pork and tendon in spicy lemongrass beef broth with round noodles. Accompanied by sprouts, lemon, jalapeno, basil, onions and cilantro. Medium $8
PPQ Beef Noodle House, San Francisco CA

Wow, this was really good! I loved the spicy broth and the mixture of ingredients. The last hue soup I experienced had blood cubes in it which is probably more authentic (I’m guessing), but I liked this version better. Blood cubes are a bit too rich more my taste. This broth had a deep, rich flavor that was brightened up a bit by the lemongrass. I could eat this for days!

Volcanic beef – Sweet Basil Thai Cuisine

Volcanic beef - Sweet Basil Thai Cuisine
Wok fried premium flank steak with basil, bell peppers and black pepper in lava sauce. $12.95
Sweet Basil Thai Cuisine, San Francisco CA

Hmm, I wasn’t a fan of this dish. The “premium” beef was really tough and it didn’t have much flavor. The lava sauce wasn’t lava-ish at all. I guess I should have requested it extra hot, but you would think that something called “lava sauce” would already have some heat to it.

Yangtze spareribs – Jasmine Tea House

Yangtze spareribs - Jasmine Tea House
Marinated tender spareribs BBQ with chef’s special light honey sauce. $11.95
Jasmine Tea House, San Francisco CA

Meh, I wasn’t a fan of these spareribs. The chef’s special sauce wasn’t very tasty and you couldn’t taste much honey. You would think that a honey sauce would have some sweetness and thickness to it, but this was somewhat bland and runny. The meat was also on the tough and dry side. I wouldn’t order this again.

Burmese style beef curry – Burma Superstar

Burmese style beef curry - Burma Superstar
Burma Superstar’s special curry. Beef braised until tender with potatoes and topped with cilantro. $13.75
Burma Superstar, San Francisco CA

I’m not actually sure what makes this curry Burmese. I really need to find out these distinctions. I’ve noticed that most of the time, Burmese food is pretty similar to Thai food. But this curry was more like a beef stew that a typical Southeast Asian curry that you might think of. Regardless, it was very tasty and super hearty. There was plenty of beef in there so we definitely got full. 🙂

This dish was really good. There was a lot of tender slices of beef in there and they also packed in a lot of onions, scallions, garlic, and chilies. Definitely worth a re-order. $8.75

Bulgoki beef buns – Rikki Rikki

Bulgoki beef buns - Rikki Rikki
Three steamed asian buns, filled with bulgoki beef and wild greens. Happy hour $5.95
Rikki Rikki, Kirkland WA

Uh, that’s a new spelling of the word! I guess that’s what you get when you order a Korean style beef packed into Chinese steamed buns at a Japanese sushi restaurant, lol! These buns were ok. They didn’t have the great Korean bulgogi flavors that I was expected. At two bucks a pop, I really can’t complain too much though. They’re a great value!

Wagyu filet “carpaccio” – Luce

Wagyu filet carpaccio - Luce
Crispy sweetbreads, barley scented beef consomme, summer truffle. Tasting menu $95
Luce, San Francisco CA

Wow, this was a successful dish for me! The thinly sliced beef was delicious and the toasted barley pieces were fun to crunch. The deep aroma of the beef consomme was wonderful and the crispy sweetbreads were rich and tasty too. The summer truffle had a mild aroma, but had a great flaky texture that added to the dish.

Madarin combo clay pot – Jasmine Tea House

Madarin combo clay pot - Jasmine Tea House
Shrimp, beef, scallop, squid, chicken, jalapeno, vegetable, garlic. $12.95
Jasmine Tea House, San Francisco CA

Mmm, for a delivery clay pot dish, this rocked! The ingredients were of surprisingly good quality and they tasted great! There were so many proteins packed in there. Most Chinese places fill the dish with bok choy and only give you a few slices of meat. I was even surprised that the squid and scallops were tender and fresh tasting. Now that’s impressive for Chinese delivery! I would definitely order this dish again.

Emirates Team NZ chellenger burger – Waiheke Island Yacht Club

Emirates Team NZ chellenger burger - Waiheke Island Yacht Club
100% NZ beef and lamb, smoked tomato chutney, beets, lettuce, kikorangi blue cheese and egg. $15
Waiheke Island Yacht Club, San Francisco CA

Omg, this burger was killer! If this is what all New Zealand burgers are like, I need to visit NZ soon! The patty was juicy and flavorful, and all the toppings were delicious. The burger was huge so I just rolled up my sleeves and got down and dirty with it. I don’t care what anybody say, but I’m a fan of eggs on burgers and this sunny side up egg was a thing of beauty. I was also delighted by the kikorangi blue cheese which I’d never had before. It was spread on the top bun and I initially thought that it was some kind of decadent pate spread because it was so rich and delicious, NOMS!
