Ox tail empanadas – Lolo

Ox tail empanadas - Lolo
With tomato, red cabbage, and chipotle sauce. $8
Lolo, San Francisco CA

As much as I disliked my dining experience, I did like these empanadas. They were nicely fried and the texture was great. The oxtail had great flavor and the chipotle sauce was tasty. Overall, this place needs to greatly improve on service and timing! And lay off on the sauce, man!

Alice in Wonderland graffiti mural, Mission Street. This artwork was pretty cute. They painted it on a door and it depicts Alice approaching a tiny door with a key.

Texas biscuit and gravy – Waffle House

Texas biscuit and gravy - Waffle House
One toasted biscuit smothered in sausage gravy. $1.60
Waffle House, North Charleston SC

Ugh, my heart hurts just looking at this pic again. Sometimes I really don’t know why I keep eating this stuff. Maybe because it’s delicious! Ok, the Waffle House version wasn’t very good but I couldn’t help ordering it.

Minute Maid orange juice - Waffle House

Large Minute Maid orange juice. $0.99

Jake’s spaghetti and meatballs – Jake’s on Market

Jake's spaghetti and meatballs - Jake's on Market
Beef, pork and veal meatballs slow-cooked in a tomato basil sauce. $14.50
Jake’s on Market, San Francisco CA

Another definite comfort food. The meatballs were super juicy and the sauce was delicious! I liked that they didn’t go overboard with the amount of pasta.

Grated parmesan cheese - Jake's on Market
Extra grated parmesan cheese.

 Hen-and-chicks plants (Echeveria sp., Crassulaceae)
Large hen-and-chicks plants (Echeveria sp., Crassulaceae), Dolores Street. I love the dramatic, upright inflorescence.

Short rib gorditas – Lolo

Short rib gorditas - Lolo
Blue corn masa pockets filled with braised short ribs, roasted three chile sauce, avocado, and pickled onions. $12
Lolo, San Francisco CA

This was about the time during our meal when they still wanted to put more food down at our table, but there was absolutely no space! I don’t want to shove food down my throat just to make room, jerks – RUDE!

Oxalis crassipes 'Alba' (Oxalidaceae)

Oxalis crassipes ‘Alba’ (Oxalidaceae), 18th Street. Beautiful cascading oxalis with white flowers in The Castro.

Turkey dinner - Jake's on Market
Organic free-range turkey, house-made stuffing, whipped potatoes, green beans, cranberry orange compote, homestyle gravy. $15.50
Jake’s on Market, San Francisco CA

Wow, this was definitely Thanksgiving on a plate! It had all the wonderful components of a traditional Turkey-Day dinner, that’s for sure. And everything tasted great. Horrible for the waistline, perfect for the soul!

Roasted duck, Chinatown

Roasted duck, Chinatown. I can get a lot of different food in this city. These look delicious!

Octopus tiradito – Lolo

Octopus tiradito - Lolo
Chili flakes, sea salt and cascabel aioli. $12
Lolo, San Francisco CA

All of these dishes were preassembled because everything came out suspiciously quick for a super busy restaurant! And I mean quick! I don’t mind getting my food quickly, but I still want to feel like they’re cooking back there and that I’m not being rushed out of my table! Sheesh! The octopus in this dish was a little chewy. I’d let you know what it tasted like but there was SO much crap on top of it that you really couldn’t taste the octopus at all.

Dolores Park, The Mission. I love the newly rennovated playground area in this beautiful park!

Crab cakes, East Coast vs. West Coast – Jake’s on Market

Crab cakes - Jake's on Market
Fresh Maryland blue crab cake with Old Bay aioli. Fresh local dungeness crab cake with Meyer lemon aioli. Mixed green salad with citrus. $14.50
Jake’s on Market, San Francisco CA

I hate to say it, but I liked the East Coast crab cake better. They tasted SO different from each other but I was craving something comforting that night and the East Coast cake had a deeper, fuller flavor. The West Coast crab cake definitely tasted more clean and refreshing.

Bread and butter - Jake's on Market
Bread and butter. Complimentary.

Layers of homes on Roosevelt Way
Layers of homes on Roosevelt Way. I like how the buildings appeared stacked from this angle.

Carnitas – Lolo

Carnitas - Lolo
With organic blue corn tortilla, roasted tomatillo sauce, guacamole, pickled onions. $14
Lolo, San Francisco CA

The carnitas had a good flavor, but the blue corn tortillas were super dry and thick and there was WAY too much sauce on top. The menu said it was a “roasted tomatillo sauce”, but I think they switched it out to some kind of red pepper sauce instead. It seemed like they brought out all the tapas at once which was ridiculous since the tables were SO frickin’ tiny! Argh!

Graffiti mural, 15th Street
Graffiti mural with shark, 15th Street. I love the vibrant colors in this. The sharlk and the turtle are nice additions, lol.

Cocktails – Jake’s on Market

Ravenous Pineapple cocktail - Jake's on Market
Ravenous Pineapple – Herradura tequila, Ilegal mezcal, pineapple and lime served tall. $12

Jake's Takes Manhattan cocktail - Jake's on Market

Jake’s Takes Manhattan – Knob Creek bourbon whiskey, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur and Amaro Averna served up. $12
Jake’s on Market, San Francisco CA

I wasn’t too impressed by the cocktails at Jake’s, especially at $12 a pop. For one thing, if something is supposed to be “served tall” I expect it to come in a highball or similar glassware, not in a short tumbler. Lame! The Ravenous Pineapple cocktail was different, but not amazing tasting. The Manhattan tasted a little better.

Filon garnacha 2010 – Lolo

Filon garnacha 2010 - Lolo
Calatayud, Spain. Red wine, berries, leather, anise. Glass $8
Lolo, San Francisco CA

This dinner started off well with the wine (it tasted pretty good), but quickly went downhill from there. The service was sporadic and the timing was WAY off!

Pink flowered succulent (Echeveria sp., Crassulaceae), Dolores Street. My neighbor has a simple planter filled with beautiful succulents and other drought tolerant plants. Love the color of this one!

Manti – Tuba Restaurant and Grill

Manti - Tuba Restaurant and Grill
Stuffed beef dumplings topped with yogurt, red pepper flakes, sumac and dried mint. $16

These beef dumplings were so cute and small. They were dense and delicious and the yogurt sauce was flavorful! I would definitely order these again.
