Project 365: Day 12

Omg! It was SO hard waking up this morning. We were on the road by 4:50 AM and I drove the entire way. It took almost 7 hours! Silverfox was feeling sick so I took on the driving duties. He deserved to sleep during the car ride. The toughest part of the drive was the 210. It was so dark and foggy. It took a lot of concentration not to fall asleep behind the wheel. Once we passed Santa Clarita, it got brighter so it was a breeze from there on. We made one stop at Kettleman City for gas and a Starbucks run. I also grabbed this burrito bowl at Chipotle in Millbrae before Silverfox dropped me off at work.

It’s a holiday, but the workload seemed normal. I guess we have a lot of work that hasn’t been assigned yet (not gonna name names, argh!) so this coming week is gonna be fun! Not. I am excited to hit the gym tomorrow morning!

Standard Chipotle fare – barbacoa is my favorite here. Didn’t quite hit the spot but the large Diet Coke helped. Oh well, it was quick and on the way to work so I’m not gonna complain.

I had a hard time sleeping last night, not sure why. I even had a nightmare where a snake tried biting me. Odd, huh?

Silverfox and I had a late brunch at one of our usual Palm Springs breakfast joints, Pinocchio In The Desert. Unfortunately, we were SO disappointed. Maybe it was the overcast weather, but everything at this place seemed off.  I’ve always known that you don’t really go to Pinocchio for the food, but the atmosphere is usually really fun so you don’t notice that the food isn’t all that great.

Today, we both noticed that the food was really crappy. That and the bottomless mimosas gave me a headache and knocked me out for the afternoon.

We did have a great dinner at Johannes though. You can read my diatribe about dark restaurants in my previous entry. I HATE DARK RESTAURANTS! So annoying.

Otherwise, had a lazy day. Did some clothes shopping and ran some errands. A nice vacay day if you ask me. Just wish the food had been better.

I guess this tasted ok, but how can you really go wrong with a burger drenched in teriyaki sauce with pineapples! Hawaiian burgers have always been a favorite of mine, but the beef patty on this burger was a bit of a throw away. Sad.

Omg, SO good! This plate totally hit the spot and it was pretty big! I also loved their refried beans, nice and rich and flavorful. You can definitely taste the fatty goodness in them. I would order this again in a heartbeat!

Sangria. I’ve never had sangria in a paper cup, but the nice girl at the counter told us that you get way more sangria in the paper cups versus their wine glasses and you get charged the same price. Score! And they tasted pretty good, too!

Went to try this Vietnamese restaurant for lunch because this was the last day of their Grand Opening special. Free soda and 20% off the entire bill. Heck yeah! I guess this is their second location – the original restaurant is down in Redwood City. The food was pretty good and the lady was super nice, but a little slow and forgetful.

Can’t wait to bike to work tomorrow! I love the early morning cardio. My legs are still a little sore from squats at the gym yesterday. Rapunzel, Papa Chang and I are also gonna go for a quick ride during our lunch break. We’re gonna rule the road, lol!

This was very tasty, but you really can’t go wrong with Vietnamese food – the flavors are bright and refreshing. Both the pork and prawns were tender and flavorful. I really like the compressed vermicelli noodles! I don’t think I’ve had them like that before. I made one lettuce roll, but it was too messy so I ended up just dumping the fish sauce (and some chili oil) over the whole plate and using chopsticks to eat everything. I’m a simple man!

I love that Slider’s cooks their burgers to-order! Their rotating grill is at the front of the restaurant and your patty goes on as soon as you order so your burger is served hot and fresh! They have a toppings bar where you can add whatever you like to your juicy burger.

Omg, for 1/2 a sandwich this was HUGE and tasty!  I loved the combination of mortadella, salami and provolone.  The sundried tomatoes and pepperocinis added lots of flavor.  I wasn’t blown away by this sandwich but it was simple and delicious.  Can’t complain about that!

David orders the regular cheeseburger with onions.  I think it’s boring without “animal style”, but he’s more health conscious than I am.  I don’t think he’d even go to In-N-Out unless I insisted on it during our road trips.   Hehe!

Lemme just say that I periodically have In-N-Out cravings! It’s a treat for me because the ones in the Bay Area aren’t easily accessible without a car (beside the super busy and touristy one in Fisherman’s Wharf). So when a road trip comes along and there’s an In-N-Out Burger along the way, you best believe I’m making a stop. Lately I’ve been ordering a cheeseburger animal style because I feel guilty ordering a double-double.  Sad.  It doesn’t matter though because all of the burgers are frickin’ DELICIOUS!!!

This is one of those wonderful burgers that melts in your mouth.  The bun is so light and buttery that it simply dissolves against the roof of your mouth.  The beef patty is exceptionally juicy and the entire burger is intoxicating!  Noms!

These were so good and refreshing.  When we were ordering I only wanted the Slanted Door spring rolls, but the waiter suggested that we get half and half.  I’m so glad we did because the Vegetarian spring rolls were amazing.  I actually liked them better, hehe.  The Vegetarian rolls had more flavor, mostly from the shiitake mushrooms.  I did like how there was a thin slice of pork rolled throughout the Slanted Door rolls.  The peanut sauce was different from others I’ve tried.  It almost had mayo texture and flavor in it, very creamy.  I wasn’t a fan at first, but it grew on me.

I’ve never had this before, but it was really good!  I think this was the only non-pho dish ordered in the entire restaurant.  Seriously, lol!  I wanted to try something new and this fit the bill.  The grilled pork slices were yummy.  These were cut thicker than at other Vietnamese places.  The pork patties were flavorful, but way too fatty for my taste.  They left that gross fatty film in your mouth.  The sweet, fish saucey liquid that it came in was delicious.  The fresh herbs were great and really made the Vietnamese flavor.  I wasn’t really sure how to eat this so I made things up!  I first wrapped everything in some of the lettuce, but that proved too messy.  I ended up using a small bowl to mix everything in small batches, poured some sauce over it and enjoyed!

This dish was absolutely beautiful with the pinkish red beets, green lettuces and avocado, pale vinaigrette, and dark toast. I didn’t know what a Chioggia beet was, but apparently Chioggia is a coastal town near Venice and the beets have concentric white and pink stripes before they’re cooked. They tasted great! Not sure where the mixed lettuces were though. There was only one type of green, and it appeared to be some type of cress.
