This was the weirdest sandwich I’ve ever had. The combination of ingredients wasn’t necessarily bad, but the it made for a dense mass with an odd texture. I would have preferred less of the sandwich and more of the delicious watermelon salad!

Discoverer statue Plaza de Colon

“Discoverer” statue of Christopher Columbus at the Plaza de Colon. This plaza marks what I think is the entrance to the main section of Old San Juan. Most of the traffic into this area passes by this plaza on the way to the nearby hotels and restaurants. The square isn’t very large, but the pillar and statue in the middle of the square stands prominently over the neighboring buildings.

The extras were better than the fish, lol! But you really can’t complain about pickled cucumbers and fried plantains. The flying fish, on the other hand, had a really strong fishy taste – not my thing. Great presentation though.

Independence Arch
Independence Arch at the end of the historic Chamberlain Bridge in Bridgetown. At the base of this colorful arch, there is The Pledge which reads, “I pledge allegiance to my country Barbados and to my flag to uphold and defend their honour and by my living to do credit to my nation wherever I go.” Pretty cool stuff.

Angela, our cab driver, suggested we try this local dish “cou cou”. It’s ground cornmeal cooked with what I’m sure is a LOT of butter, broth, and spices. This version also had slices of okra in it. It was pretty good, but the okra pieces were a bit slimey for my taste. The broth/sauce was very comforting.

Turnera ulmifolia
The first part of the day was off-and-on rain, but it didn’t detract from the beauty of the island and it’s lush greenery. This yellow alder or buttercup bush (Turnera ulmifolia) was prevalently planted, I’m sure for its vibrant yellow blooms. I was surprised to find out that it belongs to the Passifloraceae family.

Stray cat Old San Juan

Walking through Old San Juan, we found that there are stray cats EVERYWHERE! They even leave out food, water, and crates for them along the street and in the parks. We figured they must be sanctioned by the city for pest control.

Yum, I love Saigon Sandwich for their absolutely delicious and CHEAP sandwiches! These sandwiches are quite large for only costing $3.50. The chicken was very flavorful and the pickled veggies were perfect. Mmm, if I lived closer to this place I would hit it up several times a week!

Project 365: Day 98

This is the penultimate day of my work trip in Charleston, yay! I fly back to San Francisco tomorrow morning. I’ve suggested to my co-instructor that we have a final dinner together to celebrate the end of the course. I think I’ll take him to The Glass Onion. I’ve been there before and the food is great and reasonably priced. They also have a varied selection so I’m sure that he’ll find something that he likes.

It’s been great teaching with him. He’s definitely nice enough and easy to talk to. He was mostly a hotel hermit though, but I didn’t mind since that allowed me to use the rental car whenever I wanted. Hehe!

I’m SO glad to be back home!!! I’ve missed my bed. I’ve missed my dog. I’ve even missed the work office. And I’ve missed Silverfox! We’re going to have dinner tonight at Starbelly. I’m looking forward to eating a wonderfully delicious, California-cooked meal. I have to go into work tomorrow (Friday) and them I’ll have an entire weekend to relax and do nothing. Just sit around and enjoy being home.

Argh, I’m back in the real world! Had to go into work of a couple hours today. Kinda glad because I really need the money after that trip! Went to Whole Foods to grab groceries for my lunches this week. Ended up meeting Hubbs for catching up and drinks in the Castro. I hadn’t seen him in a while so I got a little too crazy with the drinks then ended up at 7-11 for nachos, lol!

Project 365: Day 80

We’ve landed in San Juan PR and it’s departure day. We had brunch with the gang up in the Oceanview Cafe then headed down to the theater to await our disembarkation announcements. The 6 of us who were flying out today shared a cab to the airport. Our flight back was SJU-JFK-SFO. We were a little delayed leaving SJU but we made time in the air and arrived at JFK on time. As our connection was leaving the gate at JFK, some girl wanted to get off the plane so we had to return to the gate and wait for her to leave (so annoying!). Even though we had a super late departure, we still made it back to SFO at a decent time and I was in my bed before 1 AM.

Project 365: Day 79

Today was the last sea day on the boat before returning to San Juan PR. I had mixed emotions – I was glad to be heading home after a long fun trip but sad to actually return to the real world. I’ll miss the constantly available food and waking up each morning to find myself at a new and exciting island. We decided to have a slow and relaxing day. We had brunch in the main dining room, had multiple snacks up in the Oceanview Cafe, played a slot tournment, played Bingo hosted by Jackie Beat, attend an Over The Rainbow T-Dance, had dinner in the main dining room, watched the Miss Richfield 1981 show (omg, SO funny!), packed our bags and called it a night.

Project 365: Day 78

Finally, we’ve made it to Gustavia, Saint Barthelemy (St. Barths)! We had a small breakfast at the Oceanview Cafe, then met the gang to tender to shore. Gustavia is really clean and pretty and EXPENSIVE! Everything is also in Euros so it’s more expensive than you think. We made our way to Shell Beach and rented chairs for the day. Thank goodness because there were a few downpours but we stayed mostly dry. We had a fabulous lunch at Do Brazil, laid out and swam all day, did some shopping in town, had coffee at a cafe, then tendered back to the ship. So sad to leave such a beautiful and relaxing island. We relaxed in our cabin for a little bit, then I went for a snack at Oceanview Cafe, met Silverfox for drinks at the Martini Bar, had dinner with the gang in the main dining room, took a disco nap, then partied the night away at the White Party!

Carnitas and lengua tacos – El Patron Lonchera

I had to work in Oakland in the morning today so I stopped by one of the Mexican food trucks in West Oakland for lunch. One of my co-workers suggested El Patron Lonchera because they have tasty tacos and the food hasn’t made him sick yet, lol!

These were pretty good! Both tacos had great flavor and they didn’t get me sick, hehe. The beef tongue was in large chunks (yum) and the carnitas were nicely shredded with a few crispy pieces (double yum). The guy running the food truck doesn’t speak English so you either have to gesture or try and remember your pathetic highschool Spanish grammar!  🙂
