The Big Bamboozer – Bamboo Restaurant

The Big Bamboozer - Bamboo Restaurant
A sampler of their most popular pupus: two chicken sate pot stickers, two grilled shrimp with Thai coconut sauce, and two pieces of kalua pork quesadilla. Served with rice and green salad.. $15.95
Bamboo Restaurant, Hawi HI

Wow, this was a lot of food! But the item that I was most excited about, the chicken sate pot stickers, were the least memorable – lame. Everything else was pretty good and had good flavor. I sadly likened this to an Applebee’s sampler platter though. All the food was just piled onto a small plate and it didn’t look very appetizing.

Tom yum khung – Original Thai Cuisine

Tom yum khung – Original Thai Cuisine
Thai spicy lemon grass soup with shrimp, mushrooms, red onions, tomatoes, Chinese parsley and Thai herbs. Cup $6.50
Original Thai Cuisine, Kailua-Kona HI

We decided to switch it up with food and find out how Hawaiians do Thai! We had mixed reviews. The soups were really good and flavorful. $6.50 is normally a lot for a cup of soup, but they’re actually the size of bowls. We didn’t know this place was BYOB otherwise we would have brought a case, lol!

Crispy coconut crusted black tiger shrimp – Duke’s Waikiki

Crispy coconut crusted black tiger shrimp - Duke's Waikiki
With spicy lilikoi sauce. $10.95
Duke’s Waikiki, Honolulu HI

This had good flavor, but it was a bit greasy – lame. The sauce was very subtle tasting. (lilikoi is Hawaiian passion fruit). Our bartender was super cool though so that made up for the mediocre food. 🙂

Seafood champon ramen combo – Ezogiku

Seafood champon ramen combo - Ezogiku
Topped with shrimp, squid, fishcake, and vegetables. $9.75
Ezogiku, Honolulu HI

I’ve never had champon before, and it was REALLY good! I find it difficult to describe the flavor. It was definitely seafood-y but it also had an almost creamy quality. I’ll definitely have to try it again to fully appreciate the complexity of flavors. Sorry for the messy bowl, we had started eating it before I remember to snap a pic, oops!

Gyoza - Ezogiku

Goi cuon – Zadin

Goi cuon - Zadin
Summer rolls. Steamed shrimp and pork, rice vermicelli, bean sprouts, red leaf lettuce, cilantro and mint wrapped in rice paper served with peanut sauce. $8.50
Zadin, San Francisco CA

Being the little piggy that I am, I enjoyed that these summer rolls came with both shrimp and pork inside! In gnereal, I’d also have to say that I was impressed with all their sauces. Go Zadin!

Shilshole Bay Marina 50th anniversary block party!

Shrimp caesar salad - Shilshole Bay Marina

Shilshole Bay Marina, Seattle WA

It was a warm, beautiful afternoon and my brother found out that Shilshole Bay Marina was throwing a block party to celebrate their 50th anniversary. So, naturally, we hopped onto our beach cruisers and biked over. We were pleasantly surprised by the great quality of free food they were handing out! You had your choice of a shrimp or salmon casear salad and a drink. They were also handing out bags of Kukuruza popcorn which, by the way, is delicious! It’s a local Seattle company with a storefront in Ballard (and elsewhere probably). We hung out for a while, just long enough to get some cake – lol! Ah, another great day in Seattle!

Crystal dumplings – Good Luck Dim Sum

Crystal dumplings - Good Luck Dim Sum
Filled with shrimp and chives. 3 for $1.60
Good Luck Dim Sum, San Francisco CA

I’m not really sure why these are called crystal dumplings since they use the same kind of wrapper on most of the other dumplings but just have a slightly different shape. Hmm… Anyway, they were still delicious, hehe!

This was very good and I loved the jicama wrapper. Great for a low-carb diet! The shrimp were nicely cooked and I simply devoured these tacos.

Smile car

“Smile” car. This killer car was parked beside the Mission Dolores. I think they spelled “smile” backwards so that it reads correctly if you’re looking at it from your rearview mirror. Hehe!
