Blue crab and avocado salad – Palio

Blue crab and avocado salad Palio
On grilled tomato with lime vinaigrette, served with toasted bread. $9
Palio, Old San Juan, PUERTO RICO

These were SO weird and totally not what we expected. The crab salad had a really weird texture, flavor, and color. And the grilled tomatoes were super cold. I was not a fan. 😦

San Juan Bay
View of San Juan Bay from the Palio balcony. There were usually a couple of cruise ships parked out front, but the terminals were oddly empty this particular day.

Cocktails – Palio

Mojito Palio
Bacardi mojito. Happy hour $5

Rum and Coke Palio
Bacardi and Diet Coke. Happy hour $5

Blue Sunset Palio
Blue sunset cocktail. Complimentary with voucher. I’m not sure what was in this thing, and I don’t want to know. It was horrible! We couldn’t even drink it even though it was free!
Palio, Old San Juan, PUERTO RICO

We came to Palio for happy hour drinks and snacks. Omg, I wish we hadn’t. The drinks were lame and the food was totally uninspired.

Sheraton Old San Juan
Looking up the side of the Sheraton Old San Juan from the balcony of Palio Restaurant. This is the hotel we stayed at in San Juan. It was a little out-dated, but it had a small casino and all the basics.

Cocktails – St. Germain Bistro & Cafe

Caipiroska St. Germain Bistro & Cafe
Caipiroska – crushed lime and vodka. $5.81

House margarita St. Germain Bistro & Cafe
House margarita – made with fresh orange juice. $6.85
St. Germain Bistro & Cafe, Old San Juan, PUERTO RICO

These tasted weak and watered down. I did enjoy the flavor of the house margarita at least, but the caipiroska was forgettable.

St. Germain Bistro & Cafe

View of the green building across the street from our table inside St. Germain. I loved all the brightly painted buildings in this town. They helped create a fun atmosphere while walking around.

Churrasquitos – Punto de Vista Restaurant

Untitled
3 Argentinean steak soft tacos, lettuce, tomato, cheese and a raspberry chipotle sauce with arroz mamposteao (blended rice). Sweet and zesty! $11
Punto de Vista Restaurant, Old San Juan, PUERTO RICO

This was ok. It wasn’t what I was expecting. This was more of a steak wrap than a soft taco in my opinion, but maybe that’s just a regional difference. It was flavorful enough especially with the sauce, but it was cold so I was bit turned off.

Morro Castle
Wall around the grounds of Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Morro Castle was designed to protect the entrance to San Juan Bay. It’s located at the western tip of Old San Juan and is a great place for walking around and flying kites.

Mojitos – Punto de Vista Restaurant

Mojitos Punto de Vista Restaurant

White rum, lime, sugar, soda, mint. Buy 1 get 1 free $4
Punto de Vista Restaurant, Old San Juan, PUERTO RICO

Mojitos Punto de Vista Restaurant
Omg, loved this place in Old San Juan! They had the best drink specials and it seemed like the specials ran all day. They actually made their drinks with alcohol unlike most of the other restaurants that served super watered-down drinks.

La Rogativa statue

La Rogativa, Lindsay Daen 1971. Old San Juan has a lot of random statues beautifying the streets. This one is located at the end of Caleta de las Monjas along the old city walls.

Roasted baby rooster – Do Brazil

Untitled
Infused with green curry, lime and coconut milk, with “plantains” bananas, tomato, and asparagus. €24
Do Brazil, Gustavia, SAINT BARTHELEMY

This dish was beautifully presented and deceivingly large. I think they put the entire baby rooster in there, lol! The dish was delicious but on the mild (plain) side. When surrounded by ginormous burgers and sweet potato fries at the table, this dish appeared too tame and proper. This could have been helped with a little more spice in the curry.

Untitled
Complimentary bread served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Omg, this bread was SO good! I don’t know where they get it. It was perfectly crusty on the outside and so soft and airy on the inside. Noms!

American warship anchor
10-ton iron anchor located across the street from St. Bartholomew Anglican Church. The anchor was discovered in 1981 and is thought to have come from an 18th century American warship. It now acts as a prominent sculpture on the southern end of the harbor.

Cocktails – Do Brazil

Sea breeze Do Brazil

Sea breeze – vodka, cranberry, grapefruit. €12

Sea breeze Do Brazil

Mojito – rum, sugar, lime, fresh mint, club soda. €12
Do Brazil, Gustavia, SAINT BARTHELEMY

Omg, I love St. Barths! This island was SO relaxing (and expensive). Of course, we had to celebrate our arrival to this amazing island with delicious cocktails. I had the sea breeze during lunch upstairs in the restaurant and the mojito at our lounge chairs on the beach.

Shell Beach Gustavia
Looking down towards Shell Beach from Fort Karl. Do Brazil Restaurant is directly behind the row of chairs. I walked up the hill while everyone stayed behind to sun. They’re relaxing under the first set of umbrellas from the right. The water was super clear and fairly warm despite the occasional rain shower. I wanna go back!

Bul jol spread – Waterfront Cafe

Bul jol spread Waterfront Cafe

Classic salted codfish salad, blended with lime, oil and fresh thyme. Served with baguette slices. Part of “Tapas for Two” $64 (Barbados dollar)
Waterfront Cafe, Bridgetown, BARBADOS

This wasn’t my favorite. It wasn’t bad tasting, but salted codfish is definitely an acquired taste. I did enjoy the light airy texture of the spread.

Royal Clipper
This was a pretty cool looking 5-masted ship called the Royal Clipper docked at the cruise ship terminal.

Eel, feuille de brick – Benu

Project 365: Day 105

I’m learning a lot at this conference – mostly about labor laws and conflict resolution. There’s a lot of information being thrown at us and I’m trying to take in as much as I can. I ran over to The Bellagio and had lunch at Todd English’s Olives. We were only given a short lunch today, so I barely made it back to the conference on time. We have a reception this evening where they will be providing basic drinks and oeur d’oeuvres. I think that since I’ve been pigging out way too much this trip, I’ll attend that and forgo having dinner afterward.

Eel, feuille de brick Benu

With creme fraiche and lime. Pre fixe dinner $180
Benu, San Francisco

Ok, let’s just call this an eel cigarette! This wrapped eel dish was really small, but tasty nonetheless. It was difficult to get a really nice eel flavor since there was only a sliver of it inside the feuille de brick. I appreciated the delicateness of it especially since its fried.

Eel, feuille de brick Benu

It looks like a smiley face!

Creme fraiche and lime Benu

Creme fraiche and lime.

Larb phed yang – Lers Ros Thai

Larb phed yang Lers Ros Thai

Chopped roasted duck mixed with rice powder, red onion, cilantro, chilies, chili powder and a lime based salad dressing. Served with iceberg lettuce cups. $9.95
Lers Ros Thai, San Francisco

This duck larb was AMAZING! I’ve never had duck larb before, and this was delicious. I envisioned the duck being minced like chicken larb, but it was chopped into chunky pieces instead. It had the traditional larb flavors, but the addition of the dark flavors from the moist and tender duck put it over the top! This was the highlight of our meal at Ler Ros Thai. The other dishes fell flat.  😦

Sopa de albondigas – Mijita

Sopa de albondigas Mijita

Mexican meatball soup. Beef and pork meatballs in a tomato based broth with carrots, onions, zucchini, celery, lime, parsley, and shredded tortilla chips. $8
Mijita, San Francisco

Yet another soup that was served luke warm! Was this suppose to be served that way? I like my soups HOT! If they’re too hot, then I’ll just wait a couple minutes for them to cool down, but I enjoy them so much more when they’re able to warm my stomach, literally! This soup was OK. Not sure why it’s on the 7×7 Big Eat list. There are plenty of other soups out there that have more flavor (and are served piping hot). The meatballs are tiny, making them easier to eat I suppose. With that much vegetables in the soup, you’d think that it’d have a little more flavor.

Oh, and a sea gull tried to attack me while sitting at the outside table. That was my cue to move inside, but there are still birds running around there too. Gross, so unsanitary!
