Sandwich mixte – La Cooperative

Sandwich mixte - La Cooperative
Ham, swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. 5,90€
La Cooperative, Paris FR

After a long day of sightseeing, we really needed some food on our way back to the hotel. We came across La Cooperative on our walk from the Louvre. It looked like a cute cafe and the clientele appeared to be a mixture of business people, locals and tourists so we decided to give it a try. The food was fairly good, but the service was really erratic. We were served by two different waiters both of whom were really difficult to wave down when we needed anything.

While this sandwich was pretty standard, the bread was really good. I also prefer the mayonnaise they use in France. It has a better consistency and flavor.

Drinks - La Cooperative

Coca-Cola light. 50 cl 7,20€
Kir au Sauvignon. 25 cl 5,70€
OK, I’m still baffled why drinks are SO expensive here! We spent more money on soda and water than we did our food. Am I just being a ridiculous American that I think this is outrageous?! 😦

Fountain of Warsaw, Jardins du Trocadero. The Gardens of the Trocadero are beautiful and a great place to view the Eiffel Tower and take photos. Of course I did a customary “jump” photo with the tower in the background, lol.

Ham and cheese strata – Rustic Bakery

Ham and cheese strata - Rustic Bakery
Savory layers of ham and cheese and foccacia bread. $3.95
Rustic Bakery, Novato CA

This was a lot denser than I was expecting. The focaccia was really heavy and there wasn’t enough ham and cheese to break it up. The strata was also pretty dry so I wish I had also ordered an ice coffee.

Croque madame – Solaire Restaurant + Bar

Croque madame - Solaire Restaurant + Bar
Smoked ham, gruyere, fried Glaum eggs and mornay sauce served with breakfast potatoes. $15
Solaire Restaurant + Bar, Santa Cruz CA

This croque madame tasted ok – nothing special. But I will say that it was HUGE if that turns you on. The ham looked like cheap deli slices so I wish they had used better ingredients. The mornay sauce was on the cheesier side, but the potatoes were great with lots of flavor.

Ketchup - Solaire Restaurant + Bar

Croque madame – L’appart Resto

Croque madame - L'appart Resto
Ham, bechamel and gruyere on Panarma brioche topped with an egg served with mixed greens. $10
L’appart Resto, San Anselmo CA

This dish had some good flavors, but it was super dry! I love my croque madames with plenty of bechamel sauce and gooey cheese that oozes from the middle. The brioche on this croque madame was really dried out and there wasn’t enough moisture from elsewhere to help save the dish. Even the sunny side up egg wasn’t enough to soak some life into this dish.

Salmon tarte flambee – Noeteca

Salmon tarte flambee - Noeteca
Alsace inspired thin flatbread “pizza” with nova lox smoked salmon, caramelized onion, capers, dill, lemon, and creme fraiche. $12
Noeteca, San Francisco CA

Wow, this was really tasty! I don’t say this very often, but perhaps there was a bit too much toppings. The flatbread was so thin that it could barely support all the smoked salmon. I’m never one to complain about more toppings, but I can also appreciate a little balance. 🙂

Croque Josephine – Noeteca

Croque Josephine - Noeteca
Warm layers of savory bread pudding of smoke ham and cheese, topped with white cheese sauce and poached egg, served with mixed greens. $11.50
Noeteca, San Francisco CA

Omg, this was heaven! It was rich and decadent and SO delicious. I loved the consistency of the warm white cheese sauce and the thick slices of bread pudding were perfect. Noms!

Croque madame – Cafe Chloe

Croque madame - Cafe Chloe
French ham and gruyere with sunny egg and mornay sauce on toasted bread, mixed greens and roasted tomato. $13.75
Cafe Chloe, San Diego CA

Omg, this was amazingly delicious! I’ve had quite a few croque madames in my life and this was one of the better ones. It was flavorful, saucy, fatty, rich, and fabulous! Great job Cafe Chloe.

Pozole verde – Puerto Alegre

Pozole verde - Puerto Alegre
House specialty, a special blend of chicken, pork, hominy, ham, and bacon in a green stew made with chiles and tomatillos. With lime, lettuce, and radish. $10.85
Puerto Alegre, San Francisco CA

Mmm, this was very tasty but I think I’ll order a regular (non-green) pozole next time. I guess that I’m just not a huge fan of tomatillo based soups and salsas. I’d much prefer tomatoes. 🙂
