Happy hour cocktails – Nola

Ginger julep - Nola

Ginger Julep: Bulleit bourbon, house made ginger syrup, Evolution lemon juice, muddled fresh mint, Bundaberg ginger beer. $6
Nola, Palo Alto CA

You never know how a bar is gonna pour when they have happy hour cocktails, but these drinks were quite large and actually had alcohol in them! Score! The bartenders at Nola were super nice and made great, tasty cocktails. Perhaps the sangria was a bit sweet, but I can forgive that for the enjoyable experience.

Saucy's sangria - Nola

Saucy’s Sangria: a refreshing house infusion of red wine, apples, oranges, lemons, limes, pineapples, agave nectar and fresh fruit juices with a brandy float. $6

Szeged goulash – Paprika

Szeged goulash - Paprika
Pork with sauerkraut and cream, served with gnocchi. $14.50
Paprika, San Francisco CA

I can’t say I’ve eaten much goulash in my life, but this was delicious and SO comforting! All the food at this restaurant would be great on a cold day to perk up your spirit and soul. The pork was tender and the sauce had so much flavor. The gnocchi were soft and pillowy and great for sopping up more of the tasty sauce. Noms!

Beer - Paprika
Staropramen Lager. The well balanced, full bodied, highly drinkable and pleasantly smooth taste of our Premium Lager offers a rewarding pleasure of the Czech beer. $6
Weihenstephan Hefe. A brewery licensed by the City of Freising in 1040 and has a credible claim to being the oldest working brewery in the world, nothing refreshes you more than this naturally cloudy wheat beer with its wonderful yeasty fragrance and taste. $6.50

I’m really not sure how to review beer. I generally just decide if its drinkable for me or not. These were pretty good and I love the large glasses they were served in. 🙂

Preboarding free food frenzy – Star Alliance Gold Lounge

Preboarding free food frenzy - Star Alliance Gold Lounge
Chicken sandwich, chicken satay, chicken cheese balls with sweet and sour sauce, Diet Pepsi, Guinness beer. Complimentary
Star Alliance Gold Lounge, London Heathrow Airport (LHR)

This was one of several plates I managed to devour before boarding the plane back to San Francisco. I was really impressed at how many food items, both hot and cold, that they carried at this lounge! The fried chicken cheese balls were my favorite though probably because everything tastes better fried and covered in sweet and sour sauce. And they also served a nice variety of sodas and beer. I will admit that I did stuff several bags of potato chips and Diet Pepsi’s into my carry-on bag, but only because I knew the food on United was going to be horrible and I didn’t want to starve for the next 11 hours. Lol, I’m pretty ghetto! 😉

It was also nice to take a break from walking around and to cool down in the shade with some beer. I thought it was awesome that they served Filipino beer, so we had to order some! 🙂

Paris is beautiful at night and probably even more lively. People seem to be everywhere, and why not? There’s so much to do and even the sights you saw during the day take on a completely different look and feel in the dark – it’s quite magical. Of course, it’s always good to intersperse some drink breaks throughout the evening. 🙂

Heinekens – La Perle

Heinekens - La Perle

50 cl 6,70€
La Perle, Paris FR

We came to this cafe for a late afternoon snack because it had really good online reviews. And boy was it popular! There was no place to sit outside when we arrived so we just grabbed some beers and waited for a table to open up. Like I said, hardly anybody eats inside here unless it’s during the heart of dinner service. We finally got a seat, ordered some food, chatted, and watched all the random people walk by – a perfect way to spend an afternoon.

National Museum of Natural History
National Museum of Natural History, Jardin des Plantes. Omg, we walked here one sweltering afternoon and I was sweating like crazy! The grounds were beautiful though and there were plenty of plantlife to admire. I really couldn’t check out all the plants though because it was just too hot under the direct sun. I do love how all the trees were perfectly trimmed to form beautiful walkways and there were plenty of open areas and benches to rest and relax.

I really liked this smoked salmon bialy. The beer cream cheese had great flavor and wasn’t as heavy as normal cream cheese. The salmon also seemed lighter and fresher. Overall, it was a great way to start the day.

This was a small but cute festival in downtown Novato. We had gone because a couple of David’s friends were volunteering and we had just had brunch with them. It had a charming small town feel and there was a good variety of booths.
