Lamb burger – Barking Frog

Lamb burger - Barking Frog
Red wine onions, arugula, goat cheese, aioli, pickle, brioche bun. Served with portabello mushroom soup. $21
Barking Frog, Woodinville WA

This was a pretty heavy and rich burger, but I liked the combination of flavors. The lamb patty wasn’t too strong and it had a nice sear on the outside. The soup, also very heavy, was a tasty accompaniment.

Rockfish – Volt

Rockfish - Volt
Kohlrabi, szechuan lemon oil, dill. Tasting menu $95
Volt, Frederick MD

Mmm, this was delicious! And it wasn’t even on the tasting menu – they just brought it out as an extra. Not that I needed more food, I was getting pretty full at this point in the meal. I’m glad I tried this though. The rockfish was cooked beautifully, but I particularly liked the kohlrabi puree.

Pan-seared crab cake – Arnies Restaurant

Pan-seared crab cake - Arnies Restaurant
Mustard-fennel aioli, fresh apple and fennel slaw. Happy hour $11.755
Arnies Restaurant, Edmonds WA

This was good, but the crab cake was kinda small and it look pretty lonely on that big plate. (Who would eat that much aioli with a single, tiny crab cake anyway?) The apple fennel slaw was nice and refreshing though.

Chicken and waffles sandwich – The Wine Kitchen

Chicken and waffles sandwich - The Wine Kitchen
Boneless leg and thigh, wilted kale, buttermilk waffle, bacon jam. $14
The Wine Kitchen, Leesburg VA

This dish was a major fail! The waffles were so crumbly that they had no chance to stay intact with the fried chicken and the wilted kale. The kale was actually pretty tough so it wasn’t an easy green to put in a “sandwich” in the first place. The chicken was also pretty greasy. I definitely had diner’s remorse.

Lemongrass pork salad box – Asian Box

Lemongrass pork salad box - Asian Box
Asian salad, bean sprouts, pickled vegetables, jalapeno, scallion oil, crispy shallots, chopped peanuts, fish sauce. $8.75
Asian Box, San Francisco CA

I love the flavors of their boxes, but they’re just not filling for me especially when it’s salad instead of rice. This time around, the lemongrass pork was a bit on the dry side. I’m glad that I got the fried shallots though – they tasted good.

Angus flat iron steak and fries – Barking Frog

Angus flat iron steak and fries - Barking Frog
House cut fries, bearnaise, demi-glace. $24
Barking Frog, Woodinville WA

Mmm, this was super good. The flat iron had a nice grilled crust on the outside but was still juicy on the inside. I could have done without the bearnaise since everything was already so heavy, but the sauce was good on its own.

Duck bolognese – Volt

Duck bolognese - Volt
Braised duck legs, San Marzano tomatoes, garlic, whole wheat radiatore pasta, smoked parmesan, pepperoni bread crumbs. Tasting menu $95
Volt, Frederick MD

I thought that this was a very successful dish. I loved the combination of the duck, whole wheat pasta, smoked cheese, and breadcrumbs. It was a hearty pasta dish, but the flavors were great and you can’t get it anywhere else!

Bbq ShackMeister burger – Shake Shack

Bbq ShackMeister burger - Shake Shack
Cheeseburger topped with crispy ShackMeister Ale-marinated shallots and Shack bbq sauce. Served with order of French fries. $9.39
Shake Shack, Tysons VA

Don’t get me wrong, this burger was very tasty but I just wish that the fried shallots weren’t SO greasy! I liked how they tasted but not how they felt in my mouth. Everything else was pretty spot on though! Mmm…
