Traditional breakfast – Big Island Grill

Traditional breakfast - Big Island Grill
Two island large eggs scrambled, served with corned beef hash patties and fresh fruit. $8.95
Big Island Grill, Kailua-Kona HI

I love corned beef and these patties were soft and tasty! David ordered this because it was healthier than the loco moco, but I was able to convince hime to get the corned beef patties even though they were an unhealthy choice, hehe.

Kona coffee - Big Island Grill
Kona coffee. $2.25

Breakfast tacos – Rebel Kitchen

Breakfast tacos - Rebel Kitchen
Eggs over medium, ham, and cheese on corn tortillas topped with salsa. $7.85
Rebel Kitchen, Kealakekua HI

Mmm, everything I like served as a breakfast taco! This was delicious and I love the slightly runny eggs!

Table setting - Rebel Kitchen
Table setting. I know it’s a plastic leaf, but it still looks kinda nice, hehe.

Portuguese sausage scramble – Rebel Kitchen

Portuguese sausage scramble - Rebel Kitchen
Eggs, potato, onion, cheese. Served with wheat toast. $7.85
Rebel Kitchen, Kealakekua HI

This was a random restaurant that we stopped at on our way to kayak in Kealakekua Bay. I’m glad we did because the service was fabulous and the food was simple and delicous. My scramble had SO much flavor! And paired with Kona coffee, I couldn’t have asked for a better way to start the morning.

Kona coffee - Rebel Kitchen
100% Kona coffee. $2.50

Captain Cook Monument
Captain Cook Monument, Kealakekua Bay. We had a great time kayaking to this thing and the snorkeling in front was amazing!

Waipi’o stack breakfast – Island Lava Java

Waipi'o stack breakfast - Island Lava Java
Two eggs over easy, stacked on house-made wheat toast with applewood smoked bacon, fresh avocado, tomato, arugula and chipotle aioli. Served with a cup of fresh fruit. $11.95
Island Lava Java, Kailua-Kona HI

This was SO nommy! The bacon was perfect and I loved the chipotle aioli. Even their homemade wheat bread was tasty. I wish the eggs were less fried (they were advertised as over easy) because I love a super-runny yolk but that’s only a minor criticism. Noms!

Waipi'o Valley
We actually drove to Waipio Valley on the north side of the Big Island and it was beautiful and impressive! Although the breakfast stack was delicious, I think the Valley takes the cake. 😉

Roasted veggie omelette – Island Lava Java

Roasted veggie omelette - Island Lava Java
A generous whole-egg omelette filled with roasted veggies, Big Island goat cheese, macadamia nut pesto, avocado and parmesan cheese. Served with fresh fruit. $13.25
Island Lava Java, Kailua-Kona HI

Mmm, this omeltte was great and the ingredients were very tasty. I loved the macadamia nut pesto and the large portion. And orchid blossoms in your fruit are always a nice touch! 🙂

Iced Kona coffee - Island Lava Java

100% extra fancy Kona coffee, full city roast, over ice. $3.25

Local musician
We sat outside where they had a local musician serenading us with some Hawaiian flare. He was actually really good and we tipped him accordingly.

Chorizo sausage scramble – Portage Bay Cafe

Chorizo sausage scramble - Portage Bay Cafe
House-made chorizo sauasage, organic bell peppers and tomatoes scrambled with three eggs and topped with queso fresco, sour cream, homemade slasa and fresh green onion. Served with a warmed flour tortilla instead of toast. $14
Portage Bay Cafe, Seattle WA

This place was packed with a line out the door! Thank goodness we had reservations. I don’t completely agree why this place is super popular though. I get that they use fresh, mostly healthy ingredients but their preparations aren’t anything special. I expected a little bit more considering their shear popularity. The food was good, but I thought it was overpriced for what it was. And the service was random and slow at times.

Coffee and doughnuts – Twenty Five Lusk

Doughnuts - Twenty Five Lusk
House made brioche doughnuts, apricot creme patissiere filling, chocolate sauce. Gilt City brunch menu
Twenty Five Lusk, San Francisco CA

Ugh, the doughnuts were super dry and dense! They tasted old. It’s unfortunate that the one real misstep of the meal occurred at the end. The apricot filling, however, was delicious and the chocolate sauce was rich and tasty.

Half pint Anchor Steam ale.
Now this is my idea of a coffee and doughnut service! They randomly throw in some beer – heck yeah! 🙂

Ribeye steak and eggs – Twenty Five Lusk

Ribeye steak and eggs - Twenty Five Lusk
Two eggs poached, clamshell mushroms, hollandaise, thyme reduction. Gilt City brunch menu
Twenty Five Lusk, San Francisco CA

Mmm, so good! The hollandaise sauce was a beautiful color and tasted amazing as did the thyme reduciton. The ribeye was beautifully cooked and of a decent size. This was definitely a filling dish. Noms!

Flowering maple (Abutilon pictum, Malvaceae)

Yellow flowering maple shrub (Abutilon pictum, Malvaceae), 17th Street. I love the bright, variegated leaves!

Lobster benedict – Twenty Five Lusk

Lobster benedict - Twenty Five Lusk
Poached eggs, prosciutto, sauce hollandaise, Maine lobster, arugula, English muffin. Gilt City brunch menu
Twenty Five Lusk, San Francisco CA

SO nommy! I thought that they would skimp of the lobster, but there were large pieces of whole lobster in there. Mmm, I want more!

Leaving the city on the Golden Gate Bridge.

Huevos rancheros – Circa 59

Huevos rancheros - Circa 59
Over medium eggs, corn tortilla, chorizo, chili verde, avocado. $14
Circa 59, Palm Springs CA

I guess Circa 59 tried to make a fancy version of huevos rancheros, but I was not impressed. The eggs came out fried and not over medium, the tortillas were super greasy and had a weird gummy texture, and the chorizo was WAY too salty. Lame! This was a brunch I wish I could take back.

Breakfast sandwich – Big Ed’s Alley Inn

Breakfast sandwich - Big Ed's Alley Inn
Bacon, eggs, cheese and mayo of white bread. Served with home fries. $8.95
Big Ed’s Alley Inn, Reno NV

I think this just about gave me a heart attack, lol! The sandwich bread was definitely grilled on the same area on the grill where the bacon and eggs where first cooked. And that healthy slathering of mayo just about stopped my heart. If I was younger, I’d say this was awesome but sadly I’m getting old and have to admit that this was a bit too greasy and fatty for me…

California benedict – Peg’s Glorified Ham N Eggs

California benedict - Peg's Glorified Ham N Eggs
Glorified eggs benedict with turkey, avocado, tomato, and hollandaise. Served with fruit. $11.99
Peg’s Glorified Ham N Eggs, Reno NV

This was also gross. The hollandaise had a weird texture and flavor and the avocado had a moldy black section. The deli turkey didn’t really add anything to the dish. I liked the fruit I guess.
