Spicy ma po tofu – Xiao Long Bao Kitchen

Spicy ma po tofu Xiao Long Bao Kitchen

Tofu cubes with carrots and peas in a chili sauce. $6.95
Xiao Long Bao Kitchen, South San Francisco CA

Omg, this wasn’t spicy AT ALL! I was so disapointed! And because they lined the container with some kind of fragrant leaf, everything started tasting like it. Yuck, I didn’t like the smell of that leaf and the resulting aftertaste in the food. This dish sucked!

Egg flower soup – Xiao Long Bao Kitchen

Egg flower soup Xiao Long Bao Kitchen

Hot soup with egg, seaweed, and tofu. Complimentary with lunch special.
Xiao Long Bao Kitchen, South San Francisco CA

This was  a new one for me! I’ve never had a Chinese egg drop soup with seaweed in it. It wasn’t bad, but just different. There was nothing else in there – no tofu or vegetables. Kinda weird, but not untasty.

Vegetable deluxe – Sai Jai Thai Restaurant

Vegetable deluxe Sai Jai Thai Restaurant

Sauteed fresh broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, carrot, and fried tofu with oyster sauce. We requested that they add chicken. $7.95
Sai Jai Thai Restaurant, San Francisco

Silverfox wanted something on the healthier side, so we ordered this vegetable dish and had some chicken added to it. It was pretty good but nothing spectacular. Hadn’t eaten fried tofu in a while so this was a nice treat.

Pad makuer tofu – Lers Ros Thai

Pad makuer tofu Lers Ros Thai

Stir-fried eggplant and tofu with red bell peppers and carrots in a garlic chili sauce. $9.25
Lers Ros Thai, San Francisco

I usually love eggplant dishes, but I could have done without this forgettable version. The eggplants were SO undercooked and the tofu was bland despite it swimming in garlic chili sauce. But I guess since the garlic chili sauce was bland to start with, it couldn’t impart much flavor to this sad dish.

Bean curd with wine sauce – Chef Wang Restaurant

Bean curd with wine sauce Chef Wang Restaurant

Fried tofu with broccoli, bok choy, zucchini, carrot, onion, peas, mushrooms, water chestnuts, and garlic. $6.95
Chef Wang Restaurant, Millbrae CA

You never sure what you’re gonna get from some Chinese menus because certain dish names aren’t very descriptive. Who knew this dish would have such a variety of vegetables in it!? Pleasant surprise. 🙂

Pork, seafood and mushroom tofu soup – Mom’s Tofu House

Project 365: Day 14

Yet another excruciatingly cold day in San Francisco! Those of you in places where is actually gets below 30 degrees F are probably scoffing at me, but we San Franciscans aren’t used to a lot of super cold days in a row. My workout was much more productive today. I’m always super hungry still though.

So a group of us went to Mom’s Tofu House as an early birthday celebration. I haven’t been to a tofu house since my Berkeley days. Everyone else had the sizzling stone pot rice, but I opted for the tofu soup. When at a tofu house…! We arrived just in time to beat the lunch crowd, heck yeah!

One of the ladies was so cute. I was taking a photo of Papa Chang’s food so I had it in front of me. Then one waitress brought out my soup and I told her to put it in the middle of the table so I can finish taking the pic. I think the head waitress thought we were confused so she came over and took Papa Chang’s food away from me, placed it in front of him, and said “This is HIS!” We started laughing!

Pork, seafood and mushroom tofu soup Mom's Tofu House

Soft tofu stew served in hot stone pot with pork, calamari, mussels, clams and fish (? it’s kinda hard to make everything out) and mushrooms. Served with raw egg and rice. $9.99
Mom’s Tofu House, South San Francisco CA

This thing came out super HOT! The soup was steamed and bubbling when it arrived at the table. I ordered it spicy and it was SO delicious! I’m glad that I got the combination because it was fun to see everything in the soup with every spoonful. The flavors were great and it seemed spicier at first because the soup was so hot, but as it cooled down you could start comfortably tasting all the yummy flavors of the stew. Nommy noms!

Raw egg Mom's Tofu House

Raw egg. They bring the egg out while you’re eating the ban chan, and when the tofu soup arrives the waitress cracks the egg into the soup. Yum!

Steamed rice Mom's Tofu House

Steamed rice. I was very good with my attempted healthy eating, and I only had about a quarter of the rice!

Chicken with bean curd – Hung To Seafood

Chicken with bean curd Hung To Seafood

With mushrooms and celery, served over rice. $6
Hung To Seafood, South San Francisco

The portion size of their lunch plates are ridiculous! All that food for only six dollars! The dish tasted pretty good too. They use large pieces of chicken breast and I love the whole mushrooms. Noms!

Hot and sour soup – Xiao Long Bao Kitchen

Hot and sour soup Xiao Long Bao Kitchen

Noms, this soup was SO good!  Hot and sour soup is one of my personal favorites, and this one was especially flavorful.  It also had a great kick to it.  They definitely didn’t skimp on the ingredients like some other Chinese Restaurants trying to save a buck.  This was the soup of the day that came with a combination meal that my friend and I ordered.  The meal was very affordable and we got SO much food.  Definitely going back to this place for the delicious food! 2 person lunch combo $14.95

Slanted Door & Vegetarian spring rolls – The Slanted Door

Slanted Door and Vegetarian spring rolls

Slanted Door spring rolls (foreground): shrimp, pork, mint, lettuce, vermicelli noodles.
Vegetarian spring rolls (background): tofu, shiitakes, cabbage, mint, lettuce, vermicelli noodles.
Served with peanut sauce.  $10 for a half and half order
The Slanted Door, San Francisco

These were so good and refreshing.  When we were ordering I only wanted the Slanted Door spring rolls, but the waiter suggested that we get half and half.  I’m so glad we did because the Vegetarian spring rolls were amazing.  I actually liked them better, hehe.  The Vegetarian rolls had more flavor, mostly from the shiitake mushrooms.  I did like how there was a thin slice of pork rolled throughout the Slanted Door rolls.  The peanut sauce was different from others I’ve tried.  It almost had mayo texture and flavor in it, very creamy.  I wasn’t a fan at first, but it grew on me.

Ma po tofu – Mission Chinese Food

Ma Po Tofu Mission Chinese Food
Ground Kurobuta pork shoulder, fresh tofu, Szechuan peppercorns, jalapenos, dried red chili pepper, chili oil, green onions, cloves, garnished with chopped cilantro.
Mission Chinese Food, San Francisco CA

This has to be one of my favorite Chinese delivery dishes of all time!  It’s super spicy with all the jalapenos, dried red chilies, and even more chili oil but the pain in my mouth is worth every delicious bite.  I’m thankful that it comes with steamed rice, not only for the cooling effect but also to soak up all that mouth watering sauce.
