Preboarding free food frenzy – Star Alliance Gold Lounge

Preboarding free food frenzy - Star Alliance Gold Lounge
Chicken sandwich, chicken satay, chicken cheese balls with sweet and sour sauce, Diet Pepsi, Guinness beer. Complimentary
Star Alliance Gold Lounge, London Heathrow Airport (LHR)

This was one of several plates I managed to devour before boarding the plane back to San Francisco. I was really impressed at how many food items, both hot and cold, that they carried at this lounge! The fried chicken cheese balls were my favorite though probably because everything tastes better fried and covered in sweet and sour sauce. And they also served a nice variety of sodas and beer. I will admit that I did stuff several bags of potato chips and Diet Pepsi’s into my carry-on bag, but only because I knew the food on United was going to be horrible and I didn’t want to starve for the next 11 hours. Lol, I’m pretty ghetto! 😉

Iberico ham sandwich – Los Vikingos

Iberico ham sandwich - Los Vikingos
Jamon iberico de bellota con pan con tomate. On toasted tomato bread, with espresso.
Los Vikingos, Sitges ES

Mmm, I love tomato bread in Spain! It’s SO simple but the bread and tomatoes they use are so delicious. This particular sandwich is stuffed with Iberico ham de bellota which is of the finest grade, from free range pigs that feed in oak forests and primarily eat acorns (bellotas). Noms!

Monument al Doctor Robert

Monument al Doctor Robert in front of the Church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla. I guess Doctor Robert was a former mayor of Barcelona so I’m not sure why they have his statue in Sitges. Regardless, Sitges is so quaint with lots of cute vistas and everyone is really friendly.

BLT sandwich – Dolce Sitges

BLT sandwich - Dolce Sitges
With hard boiled eggs, mixed root chips, side salad.
Dolce Sitges, Sitges ES

Wow, this hotel was beautiful! It’s situated on a hill above the town with great views of the Mediterranean. After taking the train from Barcelona, I was super hungry when I arrived so I went straight to lobby bar/restaurant and ordered some food and mojitos! Mmm, just what the doctor ordered.

Passeig Maritim
Passeig Maritim, the main drag along the beaches. Sitges is SO charming with many visitors from all around the world there to enjoy the beautiful beaches and warm weather. The town is small enough to easily navigate, but at the same time feels cosmopolitan because it’s packed with people.

Falafel sandwich – L’As du Fallafel

Falafel sandwich - L'As du Fallafel
Pita stuffed with chickpea fritters, hummus, lightly pickled red cabbage, salted cucumbers, fried eggplant, tahini, harissa. 5,50€
L’As du Fallafel, Paris FR

This place is a MUST visit when in Paris! It’s supposedly the best falafel in the city and some would argue the best in most of Europe. Those are some strong words that I’ve read on other sites, lol! I will say that this falafel was absolutely delicious. I didn’t try another falafel in Paris for comparison, but that didn’t take away from the enjoyment I felt from eating this one or how tasty it was.

L’As du Fallafel sits on the Rue des Rosiers which was relatively near our hotel. It’s a really cool section of the Marais that boasts an unexpected Jewish neighborhood complete with synagogues, kosher butchers and bakeries. It’s quite surprising to first walk into the area and feel completely transported to another city. It’s somehow starkly delineated from the surrounding neighborhood by the people, stores, and general vibe – quite exciting actually.

There’s always a line for this place because everyone seems to know about it, but it goes fairly quickly. A guy works the line and gets your order and payment before giving you a “claim check” for your order to turn in at the window. I feel bad, but we were standing in line talking when this random guy came up and started asking us something that we couldn’t understand. I mistook him for some street person trying to sell us something so I think I responded in a rudish kinda way. I immediately realized my error and apologized for not being about to speak French, lol! I’m such a dork!

We both ordered our falafels “hot” so they came with extra harissa. These “sandwiches” were HUGE! We didn’t want to sit in what limited indoor seating they offered so we just found a curb nearby and sat with everyone else. I think it took me 15 minutes or so to eats this monster! And it messy and fun! I would take little nibbles and immediately reach for napkins to wipe off my saucy mouth. The tahini-based sauce and harissa are a killer combination. Besides the perfectly cooked falafel, the eggplants were one of my favorite components. NOMS!

I think I’ll always remember that simple meal, sitting on the dirty curb alongside other tourists, watching people pass by while trying to fend off a throng of expert pigeons, and reveling in our communal enjoyment of a special piece of Paris.

Sandwich mixte – La Cooperative

Sandwich mixte - La Cooperative
Ham, swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. 5,90€
La Cooperative, Paris FR

After a long day of sightseeing, we really needed some food on our way back to the hotel. We came across La Cooperative on our walk from the Louvre. It looked like a cute cafe and the clientele appeared to be a mixture of business people, locals and tourists so we decided to give it a try. The food was fairly good, but the service was really erratic. We were served by two different waiters both of whom were really difficult to wave down when we needed anything.

While this sandwich was pretty standard, the bread was really good. I also prefer the mayonnaise they use in France. It has a better consistency and flavor.

Drinks - La Cooperative

Coca-Cola light. 50 cl 7,20€
Kir au Sauvignon. 25 cl 5,70€
OK, I’m still baffled why drinks are SO expensive here! We spent more money on soda and water than we did our food. Am I just being a ridiculous American that I think this is outrageous?! 😦

Fountain of Warsaw, Jardins du Trocadero. The Gardens of the Trocadero are beautiful and a great place to view the Eiffel Tower and take photos. Of course I did a customary “jump” photo with the tower in the background, lol.

Renzo special sandwich – Molinari Delicatessen

Renzo special sandwich - Molinari Delicatessen
Prosciutto, coppa, fresh mozzarella, and sun dried tomato. $9.75
Molinari Delicatessen, San Francisco CA

Ew, I was not a fan! The prosciutto had so much fat and tough connective tissue that I couldn’t even gnaw through the sandwich! I had to keep spitting out balls of fat that I couldn’t eat, and lord knows that I can usually chew through anything. The meats were subpar and the bread wasn’t even fresh. The sundried toamtoes also had a weird aftertaste. This was a total letdown!

The Cowboy Way BBQ, Palm Springs CA

Noms, this was delicious! Tender pulled pork, delicious bbq sauces, and a fresh crisp slaw on top – you really can’t go wrong. There were so many great flavors in this sandwich that I’m drooling just thinking about it.

Holey smokes sandwich - The Cowboy Way BBQ
Brisket slow cooked with red oak and hickory, with Cowboy BBQ sauce, served on a fresh roll, side of Southwest macaroni salad. $11.95
The Cowboy Way BBQ, Palm Springs CA

OMG, I’ve found my go-to BBQ place in Palm Springs! The food here was amazing and very reasonably priced. The brisket was tender and smokey and the BBQ sauce was delicious. The light, spongy roll reminiscent of sliced white bread worked perfectly in this sandwich. The macaroni salad was unique, but I actually liked it. NOMS!

Italian classic sandwich – Boudin Bakery and Cafe

Italian classic sandwich - Boudin Bakery and Cafe
Italian salami, mortadella, provolone, lettuce, dijon mustard, mayo, sourdough baguette. Served with chips and a cookie. Boxed meal $10.99
Boudin Bakery and Cafe, San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

Uh, this was NOT the sourdough baguette I was expecting. It was really thick and dense, and totally threw off the bread-to-filling sandwich ratio. I actually had to carve out some of the bread from the top bun! Basic sandwich, little payoff.

Chips and cookie - Boudin Bakery and Cafe

Beef banh mi – Little Saigon
