Mixed hot pot curry – Do Brazil

Do Brazil's hot pot
Shrimp, chicken, and mahi mahi in a mild curry, served with white rice, wasabi, and pickled ginger.
Do Brazil, Gustavia, SAINT BARTHELEMY

Do Brazil's hot pot
This dish was ok, a bit on the bland side. I did appreciate the presentation and the large pieces of protein inside.

Elephant door handles
Decorative elephant door handles. The houses and buildings around Gustavia were very cute, and for the most part bright. These antiqued handles looked great against the white doors.

Baked chicken – Restaurante Raices

Baked chicken Restaurante Raices
Baked chicken served with rice and beans and carrots. $8.95
Restaurante Raices, Old San Juan, PUERTO RICO

This chicken must have been marinating in a vat of soy sauce overnight because it was SO salty! And baked to the texture of a chew toy. This was part of our first meal in Puerto Rico so we were nervous that

Side salad Restaurante Raices
Complimentary side salad with lettuce, 1 tomato slice, a sprinkle of carrot gratings, and Thousand Island dressing. This salad is a perfect indicator of the quality of this restaurant. It’s sad.

Stray cat Old San Juan

Walking through Old San Juan, we found that there are stray cats EVERYWHERE! They even leave out food, water, and crates for them along the street and in the parks. We figured they must be sanctioned by the city for pest control.

Homemade glutinous rice cakes – Benu

Project 365: Day 107

Yay, I’m back in San Francisco! And apparently, the weather has been frickin’ amazing. It’s the early evening and it’s still very warm outside. Ah, how I’ve missed you, my home! Whenever I get back from a trip, I always crave certain food. The first thing I did when I got back was order delivery from Mission Chinese Food. I needed something spicy and with punch-you-in-the-face flavor, and MCF always does it for me.

Honestly, I shouldn’t be eating again since I had a large and delicious brunch buffet at Wicked Spoon in The Cosmopolitan this morning. I was hungry again at the airport so I had a Whopper Jr. from Burger King. Argh, I can’t believe I did that!

Homemade glutinous rice cakes Benu

With pine nut, pumpkin, black truffle, garnished with flat leaf parsley. Pre fixe dinner $180
Benu, San Francisco

Wow, this dish was amazing! It was like a pumpkin gnocchi. The texture was different, but the flavors were warm, delicious, Italian. I loved that this wasn’t what I expected when I read the description. “Glutinous rice” doesn’t conjure up Italy in my mind, but I was pleasantly surprised. Everything work perfectly together and the flavors were absolutely spot on! Noms!

Spicy pork stone pot rice – Mom’s Tofu House

Project 365: Day 98

This is the penultimate day of my work trip in Charleston, yay! I fly back to San Francisco tomorrow morning. I’ve suggested to my co-instructor that we have a final dinner together to celebrate the end of the course. I think I’ll take him to The Glass Onion. I’ve been there before and the food is great and reasonably priced. They also have a varied selection so I’m sure that he’ll find something that he likes.

It’s been great teaching with him. He’s definitely nice enough and easy to talk to. He was mostly a hotel hermit though, but I didn’t mind since that allowed me to use the rental car whenever I wanted. Hehe!

Project 365: Day 99

I’m SO glad to be back home!!! I’ve missed my bed. I’ve missed my dog. I’ve even missed the work office. And I’ve missed Silverfox! We’re going to have dinner tonight at Starbelly. I’m looking forward to eating a wonderfully delicious, California-cooked meal. I have to go into work tomorrow (Friday) and them I’ll have an entire weekend to relax and do nothing. Just sit around and enjoy being home.

Bbq pork fried rice – Grand Palace Restaurant

Project 365: Day 96

Argh, it’s back to work and teaching. At least there’s only a few more days before I fly back to San Francisco. I hope a get good reviews, hehe. After my weekend of yummy, low country food I’ve been craving fried food again, lol! I guess when you’re surrounded by it, it’s difficult not to think about it. I think for dinner I’ll try some chicken fingers from Raising Cane’s. Chicken fingers aren’t anything special, but we don’t have this chain in the Bay Area (or California?) so I wanna give it a try. I think I’ll also grab dinner at Smokey Bones for some bbq. You think I’d be bbq’d out by now!

Meh, kinda dry and not very flavorful. I’ll pass on this next time.

Rice with egg rolls and grilled pork – Hometown Noodle 2

Project 365: Day 79

Today was the last sea day on the boat before returning to San Juan PR. I had mixed emotions – I was glad to be heading home after a long fun trip but sad to actually return to the real world. I’ll miss the constantly available food and waking up each morning to find myself at a new and exciting island. We decided to have a slow and relaxing day. We had brunch in the main dining room, had multiple snacks up in the Oceanview Cafe, played a slot tournment, played Bingo hosted by Jackie Beat, attend an Over The Rainbow T-Dance, had dinner in the main dining room, watched the Miss Richfield 1981 show (omg, SO funny!), packed our bags and called it a night.

Chicken tikka masala burrito – Curry Up Now

Project 365: Day 63

The weather has been really nice lately so Papa Chang and I went to grab some food at the food trucks. I really wanted to try a chicken tikka masala burrito so we swung by the Curry Up Now. We arrived early and were 2nd in line. Once we ordered there were already 10 people behind us. The couple behind us ended up ordering more than 20 things for their office. I’m SO glad we weren’t behind them, lol!

Morning fresh La Palma 12″ flour tortilla filled with methi pulao (fenugreek and turmeric rice), chana masala (garbanzo beans), and pickled onions with Fulton Valley organic chicken breast tikka masala (CTM). $8
Curry Up Now, Brisbane CA

The burrito is fairly large and filled with large pieces of chicken breast. I wasn’t all that impressed with it overall though. I liked the hint of heat in the sauce, but I think there was too much rice and there was also a lot of sweet flavor. It’s worth a try, but I’m not running back for more.

This burrito was nice and big!

Yang nyum tong dak – Mom’s Tofu House

Project 365: Day 57

Omg, this rain sucks! It’s been raining off and on all morning and, frankly, I’m tire of it! Thank goodness I’m leaving for Ohio tomorrow. I wanted to go for a walk in the afternoon, but I guess that’s no longer in my plans. I hate getting wet outside!

Hitting the gym after work and stopping my the store to buy some stuff for Codes. Also need to stop by the bank to grab money for the house keeper tomorrow. Then Silverfox is coming over, yay!

Yang nyum tong dak Mom's Tofu House

Breaded and fried chicken wings tossed in a special house sauce. Served with glass noodles, pot stickers, miso soup and rice. $9.99
Mom’s Tofu House, South San Francisco CA

Mmm, the cold rainy weather got me in the mood for something warm and comforting. I couldn’t resist ordering the chicken wings. Never had these before and they were SO good! I loved the flavorful sauce. It’s a little bit sweet and has a hint of spiciness to it, noms!

They definitely pile on the sauce, which is awesome! I love saucy wings!

Hainam chicken rice – Mission Chinese Food

Hainam chicken rice Mission Chinese Food

Dressed in Shaoxing wine and chicken fat, scrambled egg, roasted peanuts, sliced cucumber, green onion, cilantro. $7
Mission Chinese Food, San Francisco

Although this rice is probably coated in chicken fat, it somehow still tastes light. The tender cubes of chicken are SO good and the rice is nice and fluffy. The ingredients look pretty simple, but I love the overall flavor of this rice dish.

Deoji bulgogi – Jang Su Jang

Project 365: Day 52

So we had an early start today and went to the Gilroy Outlets to do some shopping for the cruise. I don’t even want to add up all my charges but I ended up with 3 pairs shoes, 6 pairs of socks, 2 polo shirts, 1 tank top, 1 belt, 1 pair of swim trunks, and 2 pairs of underwear. Omg, I got a little out of hand. Then we stopped by Jang Su Jang on the way back home. Papa Chang recommended this restaurant and I’m glad that we went because it was SO good! It’s in the middle of a shopping area on El Camino Real, but it’s actually really nice inside. The service was friendly, the prices are great, and the food is of great quality. Go try it!

Deoji bulgogi Jang Su Jang

Spicy marinated pork with sliced onions and green onions, served with rice and broth. $13.99
Jang Su Jang, Santa Clara CA

Omg, this was so good! I love spicy pork bulgogi and this was a amazing, sizzling plate of it. This version was fancier because they also served you a big bowl of crusted rice with peas and a bowl of soup broth. I’ve never been served the broth with bulgogi before so I wasn’t sure how to eat the whole thing.

Rice Jang Su Jang

We ended up just piling on spicy pork on top of the rice and pouring some of the broth over everything. Don’t know if that’s the right way, but we didn’t worry too much about it. We just stuffed our faces, lol!

Broth Jang Su Jang

This broth was very flavorful, and it had slices of cooked radishes.

Check Jang Su Jang

When the check arrived, it came with these cute bottled drinks. I’m not sure what they were, but they tasted great. It had a kind of citrus, fruity, flowery flavor. It says “Frozen Dessert” on the outside but it’s some kind of juice.

Jang Su Jang

The damage! We were SO full!

Salt cod fried rice – Mission Chinese Food

Project 365: Day 49

Wow, it’s finally warming up outside! I didn’t have to wear a vest or jacket while out during the day today. Heck yeah! Now I’m totally motivated to kill it at the gym and to bike to work tomorrow morning. Papa Chang, Rapunzel and I are also gonna bike during lunch. I will get that cruise bod yet!

Salt cod fried rice Mission Chinese Food

With escolar confit, Chinese sausage, egg, scallion. $10
Mission Chinese Food, San Francisco

Yum! But then again I like most things from Mission Chinese Food. I love the saltiness of this dish and the fatty sausage. It’s kinda hard to find the fish (escolar, Lepidocybium flavobrunneum) among all the other ingredients but you can definitely taste it.
