Pepperoni slice – Nizario’s Pizza

Pepperoni slice - Nizario's Pizza

Nizario’s Pizza, San Francisco CA

Pepperoni slice - Nizario's Pizza

Back in graduate school, I would frequently hit this place after a night of clubbing. These days, I’m less likely to grab pizza with the afterhours crowd – I’m getting old! I did, however, find myself at Nizario’s recently. I’m surprised I was able to take these pics, lol! As if a greasy pepperoni pizza slice isn’t enough, I’ll also cover the slice in red chili flakes, oregano, and parmesan cheese. I’m a mess!

Valley oak (Quercus lobata, Fagaceae), Corona Heights Park/Hill. This is my favorite oak in California. I love the large, deciduous, deeply lobed leaves!

Mushroom pizza – Firewood Cafe

Mushroom pizza - Firewood Cafe
Sautéed oyster and crimini mushrooms with caramelized onions and homemade tomato sauce. $10.25
Firewood Cafe, San Francisco CA

Mushroom pizza - Firewood Cafe
You really can’t go wrong with sauteed mushrooms and caramelized onions – this was delicious! I will say that there may have been too many toppings for the thin crust to handle (gasp, did I just say that?).

Sidewalk graffiti, Market Street

Sidewalk graffiti, Market Street. I usually see the spray painted coi fish stencils on the sidewalk, but this one was new to me!

Chicken pesto pizza – Firewood Cafe

Chicken pesto pizza Firewood Cafe
Rotisserie chicken, pesto sauce, roasted red peppers and sliced red onions. $10.95
Firewood Cafe, San Francisco CA

This pizza was ok. I usually wouldn’t say this, but I think it had too many toppings and pesto. The crust seemed weighted down by everything. I prefer some of their other pizza options.

Chicken pesto pizza - Firewood Cafe
July 3, 2015. $12.95
This was at SFO and it wasn’t as good. The crust was thicker and a little burnt. Not my favorite.

Pinot noir Firewood Cafe

Pinot noir, red wine. $6.95

Dolores Park, San Francisco

Pepperoni pizza – Mikey’s Late Night Slice

Pepperoni pizza Mikey's Late Night Slice

So after a long night at a birthday party, Taj Mahaj bar, then Level we walk outside and find a pizza truck outside the bar, amen! I guess anything would have tasted great at that point. Although I had plenty to drink, I have to say that I wasn’t all that impressed with this pizza. I’ll pass next time. $3

Roasted garlic and broccoli rabe pizza – Uva Enoteca

Roasted garlic and broccoli rabe pizza Uva Enoteca

With smoked cheese and tomatoes. $14
Uva Enoteca, San Francisco

I wasn’t a huge fan of this pizza. I enjoyed the flavors but the whole thing was heavy and clunky. The crust had an odd, dense texture which was surprising since it was thin. It’s all about the crust, right?! The pizza was also on the small side. Don’t think I’ll be ordering pizzas from Uva Enoteca again.

Roasted garlic and broccoli rabe pizza Uva Enoteca

This looks better than it tasted.

Red wines Uva Enoteca

Red wines.
Marzemino, Terre Gioia, Trentino, 2009. $10 for 8oz
Merlot, Chopris, Friuli, 2004. $9 for 8oz
They have a nice selection! These are sold by 2oz or 8oz. I like that the 8oz is served in a small, cute carafe.

Prosciutto pizza – Firewood Cafe

Prosciutto pizza Firewood Cafe

Thinly sliced Colosseum prosciutto with tender baby arugula and cheese. $10.50
Firewood Cafe, San Francisco

I’m gonna come and out say it – Firewood isn’t fine dining (I mean, you have to order at a register and take a number) but I REALLY like their pizzas! It’s nice to have a more casual option that’s fast and consistent and has pretty decent food that’s familiar and crave-able.

Prosciutto pizza Firewood Cafe

Prosciutto and arugula, how can you go wrong? I love their thin crusts!

Marinated olives Firewood Cafe

Marinated olives. Complimentary.

Why did I go to a lunch buffet? – Fresh Choice

We must have been bored or something and that’s why we randomly went to Fresh Choice for lunch. OK now I remember! Papa Chang thought he found a coupon we could use for the buffet, but it ended up being expired. They ended up giving us a discount anyway so we paid less than $8 for the lunch buffet. Although the food wasn’t amazing, I’m not going to complain at that price. And I have to commend them because they have healthy options and they post the ingredients and calorie counts for the dishes. I’m not a big lunch buffet kinda guy (except in Vegas, omg), but it’s fun to go every once in a while.

Maui Zaui pizza – Round Table Pizza

Maui Zaui Round Table Pizza

Tender ham, crisp bacon, juicy pineapple, Roma tomatoes, red and green onions. Baked with a blend of 3 cheeses and their classic red sauce. Large $20.99
Round Table Pizza, San Francisco

I’ve never had the Maui Zaui, but omg, it was darn good! I don’t usually order pizza from chain restaurants unless I’m super starving and feeling really poor (hehe). There are just so many great pizza places in San Francisco – think Delfina Pizzeria, Little Star, Patxi’s, Ragazza, etc. I feel a little guilty that I enjoyed this pizza so much. The crust was on the thinner side and it was jam packed with all my favorite toppings! Noms!

Maui Zaui Round Table Pizza

The Little Star – Little Star Pizza

The Little Star Pizza

Spinach blended with ricotta and feta, mushroom, onion and garlic on a deep dish cornmeal crust.  $24 for large 12″
Little Star Pizza, San Francisco

This is my first Little Star Pizza blog entry, but I’ve been eating at this place and ordering pick-ups for a while!  I love their pizzas!  They are still my favorite deep dish pizza in The City.  I love their thick, buttery cornmeal crust.  YUM!  All their toppings always taste fresh and flavorful, and I enjoy their chunky tomato sauce.  I’m not a big eater so one slice is usually enough for a meal, they’re kinda large.

The Little Star Pizza

I cheated and added anchovies to half the pizza. That’s the Filipino in me, lol!

Italian sausage pizza – Firewood Cafe

Italian sausage pizza Firewood Cafe

Mild Italian sausage, red and green bell peppers, Bermuda onions and homemade tomato sauce.  $10.75
Firewood Cafe, San Francisco

If you like THIN crust pizza, Firewood Cafe in the Castro is the place to go.  They have one of the thinnest crust around which is great for their mostly carb-conscious patrons, hehe!  I personally love thin crust so I often order pizza from here.  They have 5 different pizzas on their regualr menu and usually one daily special, and they’re all pretty good.  The pizzas aren’t the most creative, but they are tasty, decently sized, and very affordable.  Win, win if you ask me.  This Italian sausage pizza was delicious.  I like how the thin crust stayed crispy, and the vegetables did too.  Their homemade sauce isn’t particularly noteworthy, but it’s yummy enough and doesn’t detract from the toppings.  For $10.75, I’m sold!

Marinated olives Firewood Cafe

These marinated olives are complimentary with your order. The small dishes are lined up at the counter. I always want to take more than one! I can’t help it, I’m a sucker for olives…

Cheese slice – Arinell Pizza

Cheese slice Arinell Pizza

Thin crust, New York style, neapolitan cheese slice. Simple and delicious! $2.25
Arinell Pizza, San Francisco

I’ve found out that people either LOVE Arinell Pizza or they think that it’s overrated. I’m in the former group. Perhaps it’s because it reminds me of grad school, but I think that it’s just plain tasty! I prefer the classic neapolitan slice over their thick Sicilian slice. The crust is thin, crispy, and has a nice chewy bite. The marinara is quite flavorful and although the cheese can get a bit greasy, I think it just adds to the flavor – lol! The pizzas are parbaked, sliced to order, and reheated with your choice of toppings. Plop down in front of their small window counter and enjoy!

Margherita pizza – Pizza Politana

Margherita Pizza Politana
Fresh out of the oven, this Margherita pizza has tomato sauce, basil, and fresh mozzarella.  I ordered it with a farm egg on top!
Pizza Politana, San Francisco

The Margherita, your classic wood-fired oven pizza, is absolutely divine on its own but I was feeling extra giddy and had a farm egg added!  Pizza Politana’s Margherita was actually very good (for the most part).  The crust was thin, chewy, airy, and had a great flavor.  The ingredients are directly sourced from local farmers and artisan producers so they are of great quality and taste amazing.  My only complaint was the blistered bottom of the dough.  I don’t know what they use, but the bottom of the crust has these oily, black blisters that have an overpowering burnt, ashy flavor.  It was sad because I really enjoyed the crust, but after a while I couldn’t get the ash flavor out of my mouth and it eventually ruined the rest of the pizza.  I would have eaten around the blisters, but the shear number made it impossible.  *sad*
