Vepro, knedlo, zelo – Pifko Bar and Grill

Vepro, knedlo, zelo - Pifko Bar and Grill
Czech national dish! Slow roasted pork served with cabbage and dumplings. €10.50
Pifko Bar and Grill, Dublin IRELAND

“Pifko” means “pint” in Czech. This is a random restaurant along the River Liffey but we were looking for a change. This was the first time I’ve had traditional Czech food and I don’t think I was made into a fan. The pork was really good, but I didn’t really like the cabbage or dumplings. They were on the sour side for me and the dumplings were soggy and unappetizing. I guess I’m just not used to these flavors and textures.

Manti – Tuba Restaurant and Grill

Manti - Tuba Restaurant and Grill
Stuffed beef dumplings topped with yogurt, red pepper flakes, sumac and dried mint. $16
Tuba Restaurant and Grill, San Francisco CA

These beef dumplings were so cute and small. They were dense and delicious and the yogurt sauce was flavorful! I would definitely order these again.

Pork and amarillo dumplings – Dragonfly

Pork and amarillo dumplings Dragonfly
Steamed dumplings with citrus mojo. $14
Dragonfly, Old San Juan, PUERTO RICO

Ew, these were gross! The dumpling wrappers were thick, dry and chewy. It was difficult to taste the filling because the wrapper was SO starchy. Thank god for dipping sauces. I’m guessing amarillo refers to some type of yellow chili pepper.

Frozen pina colada

This was a frozen pina colada we had puchased from a stand in the Plaza de Armas right before Rick Santorum and his family paraded through for a campaign rally. It was surreal to see him randomly in Old San Juan!

Foie gras xiao long bao – Benu

Project 365: Day 106

It’s the last day of the conference, phew! We have classes until 1 pm and then we’re free. I’m flying home tomorrow so I’m going use this evening to decompress and eat, lol. I think I’ll head to The Palazzo and grab a late lunch at Sushi Samba. My roommate usually stays at that hotel and likes that place for sushi. For dinner, I’m gonna try Firefly off The Strip then hang out at a bar nearby. I’ve spent way too much on this trip when I should have been saving for my Europe trip next week. 😦

Foie gras xiao long bao Benu

Shanghai soup dumplings filled with foie gras. Pre fixe dinner $180
Benu, San Francisco

Meh, this was ok. I guess it was nicely cooked, but it was hard to locate the foie gras especially if you were dipping the dumpling in the vinegar sauce. I dont’ even know how the foie gras was incorporated. There was definitely a meat mixture inside, but I’m not sure if the foie was part of that or part of the soup. Anyway, one of my dumplings had a tear on the bottom so the soup had dripped to the bottom of the bowl. Lame.

Wang’s dumpling combination – Wang’s in the Desert

Project 365: Day 87

And the rain has come back to the Bay Area! Wow, it was raining cats and dogs this morning. Silverfox and I went to Toast Eatery for breakfast. I accidentally left my cell phone at home and missed Kryan’s international phone call, oops! I’ll have to catch up with him next weekend while I’m in Charleston. Gotsta go into work for a couple of hours today then finish packing for tomorrow. We’re gonna try Jake’s, the new restaurant on Market Street, for dinner tonight. Not looking forward to my early flight tomorrow. 😦

Steamed dim sum platter Wang's in the Desert

Lamb and rosemary – ground lamb with chopped rosemary, garlic and onion. Shichimi spiced beef – Angus beef, water chestnuts, napa cabbage and onion. Curried chicken – ground white meat chicken, mushrooms, onions and ginger (2 pieces each). $10
Wang’s in the Desert, Palm Springs CA

Ugh! These dumplings were SO dry and the wrappers were kinda rubbery. Don’t the descriptions look great though? Too bad the kitchen couldn’t execute them properly.

Project 365: Day 85

Another ho-hum day at work. I had a great workout afterward, then swung by Dinosaurs for a banh mi sandwich before grabbing the J Muni back home. The prices were SO cheap there that I bought an extra sandwich to bring to lunch tomorrow. They were very tasty! Pics to come once I’m caught up, lol!

Pan fried seafood pot stickers Wang's in the Desert

Shrimp and scallops with water chestnuts and scallions (4 pieces). Served with a ginger soy dipping sauce. $10
Wang’s in the Desert, Palm Springs CA

These pot stickers looked promising on the menu, but they were a little dry and dense. I really wasn’t all that impress with the food at Wang’s overall. Their happy hour is a lot more fun and a better value than their actual dinner.

Yang nyum tong dak – Mom’s Tofu House

Project 365: Day 57

Omg, this rain sucks! It’s been raining off and on all morning and, frankly, I’m tire of it! Thank goodness I’m leaving for Ohio tomorrow. I wanted to go for a walk in the afternoon, but I guess that’s no longer in my plans. I hate getting wet outside!

Hitting the gym after work and stopping my the store to buy some stuff for Codes. Also need to stop by the bank to grab money for the house keeper tomorrow. Then Silverfox is coming over, yay!

Yang nyum tong dak Mom's Tofu House

Breaded and fried chicken wings tossed in a special house sauce. Served with glass noodles, pot stickers, miso soup and rice. $9.99
Mom’s Tofu House, South San Francisco CA

Mmm, the cold rainy weather got me in the mood for something warm and comforting. I couldn’t resist ordering the chicken wings. Never had these before and they were SO good! I loved the flavorful sauce. It’s a little bit sweet and has a hint of spiciness to it, noms!

They definitely pile on the sauce, which is awesome! I love saucy wings!

Gyoza – Ebisu

Gyoza Ebisu

Pan fried pork pot sticker dumplings, served with gyoza sauce. $4
Ebisu, SFO San Francisco

Mmm, even though there were probably previously frozen, they still tasted good and fulfilled my fatty/salty cravings. I love gyoza, even when I buy them from an Asian market and completely butcher them while cooking. So I guess that’s why I’m forgiving even when I go out to restaurant and receive bad ones.

"Little Dragon" dumplings – Betelnut Restaurant

Little Dragon dumplings Betelnut Restarant

With pork, shrimp and black ginger vinegar. $11.50
Betelnut Restaurant, San Francisco

This was described by our waittress as a soup dumpling (xiao long bao), but they weren’t very soupy. I guess it’s trying to be an upscale version, but it just didn’t work. The filling was super heavy, the wrapper was too thick, and there wasn’t enough soup inside! I’ll pass on this next time.

Black ginger vinegar (and another random dipping sauce).

Steamed phoenix scallop dumplings – Grand Palace Restaurant

Steamed phoenix scallop dumplings Grand Palace Restaurant

Steamed dumplings filled with shrimp and scallops. $3.20
Grand Palace Restaurant, South San Francisco

I think these are called phoenix dumplings because it’s supposed to look like a phoenix’s eye when you look down at the dumpling from above. It’s a bit of a stretch, but I get it. I’m not sure that the stringy starchy stuff is that they put on top. Maybe some kind of then noodles?  These were delicious though with large chunks of shrimp and scallops inside!

Crispy lobster turnovers – Hung To Seafood

Crispy lobster turnovers Hung To Seafood

4 large pieces of deep fried turnovers filled with lobster and garlic chives, served with salad sauce. $4.20
Hung To Seafood, South San Francisco

I didn’t know what to expect when I ordered this, but I was pleasantly surprised. The pieces were huge and I love the large chunks of lobster inside. I will defnitely order these again! Not sure if the salad sauce really added to the dumplings though.
