Onion and poppy seed bialy – Arizmendi Bakery

Project 365: Day 97

Not much to share today. I’m SO bored with this work trip and I really wish I could fly home tomorrow, but I have to wait until Thursday. Gonna stay in my hotel room tonight and have leftovers. I’m really unmotivated to do anything right now. Omg, I forgot to mention that we had a fire alarm at 2 am the other night. That was the worst! I contemplated staying in bed and trying to ignore the alarm, but it was TOO loud. We waited outside for a good 15-20 minutes before we could re-enter the hotel. Then I could NOT fall back asleep for the life of me. That was SO lame!

Bbq pork fried rice – Grand Palace Restaurant

Project 365: Day 96

Argh, it’s back to work and teaching. At least there’s only a few more days before I fly back to San Francisco. I hope a get good reviews, hehe. After my weekend of yummy, low country food I’ve been craving fried food again, lol! I guess when you’re surrounded by it, it’s difficult not to think about it. I think for dinner I’ll try some chicken fingers from Raising Cane’s. Chicken fingers aren’t anything special, but we don’t have this chain in the Bay Area (or California?) so I wanna give it a try. I think I’ll also grab dinner at Smokey Bones for some bbq. You think I’d be bbq’d out by now!

Meh, kinda dry and not very flavorful. I’ll pass on this next time.

Lemon chicken – Grand Palace Restuarant

Project 365: Day 95

Went for another morning workout this Easter Sunday morning. It sucks to be away from San Francisco on a major holiday but I gotta do it for work. I’m gonna treat myself to a tourist/beach day. I plan on driving to Sullivan’s Island and grab lunch at Poe’s Tavern. Then I’ll look around Fort Moultrie before heading back to downtown Charleston to grab an early dinner at Anson Restaurant. I’ve been craving their delicious she crab soup that I had last time I was in Charleston. Mmm, can’t wait!

Lemon chicken Grand Palace Restaurant

Slices of fried chicken served with a lemon sauce on the side and lemon slices. $8.50
Grand Palace Restaurant, South San Francisco CA

Ew, this was kinda gross! The chicken was overcooked and the lemon sauce had a really bad chemical aftertaste. I don’t know how they make the sauce, but I doubt it’s made from all natural ingredients.

Ma po tofu – Grand Palace Restaurant

Project 365: Day 94

Went to the gym with my co-instructor this morning. It was nice to get a good workout in before heading out to downtown Charleston for some real food. I’ve decided that I want to hit Magnolias for a late lunch. I went there last time I was in Charleston so I know that the food and service are good. For dinner, I want to hit The Bar at Husk. The restaurant was recommended by a friend, but they had no availability and I don’t really mind eating at the bar especially when I’m dining by myself.

Ma po tofu Grand Palace Restaurant

Fresh tofu in a spicy sauce, topped with chopped green onions. $8
Grand Palace Restaurant, South San Francisco CA

This was a little spicier than the XLB Kitchen version, but definitely not near as spicy as the Mission Chinese Food version. MCF has forever ruined my taste for non-spicy versions of ma po tofu. Ugh!

Egg salad sandwich – Starbucks

Project 365: Day 93

Yay, I’m SO glad it’s Friday! Now I get to take a break from work and relax a little bit, maybe see some of downtown Charleston this weekend. I’m feeling kind of restless so I’ll probably check out the downtown nightlife this evening. Can’t get crazy with the alcohol though since I’ll be driving.

Egg salad sandwich Starbucks

“Classic egg salad with dill, mustard, celery and lettuce on whole-wheat bread. This traditional lunchtime favorite is dressed with all the trimmings of a truly outstanding sandwich. Crunchy bits of celery, crispy lettuce, delicate hints of dill and a touch of mustard for extra zip. At once creamy, tangy and bright, this superb egg salad, served on hearty whole-wheat bread, makes a deliciously substantial meal.” $5.25
Starbucks, Kettleman City CA

Ham and cheddar artisan breakfast sandwich – Starbucks

Project 365: Day 92

I’ve given up on the food near my hotel, so I took the shared rental car and drove to West Ashley to grab some local bbq at Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ. Omg, it was SO good! I got a combo plate to try all the different meats and I’m glad I did. The portions was gigantic so I was able to take the leftovers home. Mmm, finally!

Ham and cheddar artisan breakfast sandwich Starbucks

“This is kind of like your typical ham, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. Only with better cheese. And instead of scrambled eggs, you get frittata. With Parmesan. On a hand-scored artisan roll. See? Just like the sandwich you’re used to … except delightfully different.” $3.25
Starbucks, Kettleman City CA

The sandwich looks better this time around. 🙂

Rose Kennedy cocktails – The Tropicale

Project 365: Day 91

Ugh, I’m SO tired of fried food right now (I didn’t think I’d ever say that, lol)! I decided to hit Subway for lunch instead of going to a local fast food restaurant. There are no healthy options for lunch nearby my Charleston work location. Perhaps there are some further away, but I only have so much time during lunchtime to drive somewhere and get food. For dinner, I had leftovers from last night. The one thing that is saving this trip is that the weather is really nice. That’s keeping me motivated to work out.

Rose Kennedy cocktail The Tropicale
Vodka with soda and a splash of cranberry. Happy hour $4 each
The Tropicale, Palm Springs CA

This was the trip that we learned that these cocktails were called Rose Kennedy’s. We had been ordering them as “vodka soda with a splash of cran”, silly us! 🙂

Moroccan lamb meatballs – The Tropicale

Project 365: Day 90

My yummy food draught is still in full swing. For lunch I had greasy fried seafood at Captain D’s and by the time dinner came around, I was SO tired of the heavy, local “Southern” food that I went to Cracker Barrel near my hotel and ordered the grilled catfish. It was decent, but I think the cornbread muffins were my favorite part of the meal, hehe! I am definitely gonna gain a few pounds on this trip. I’ve been trying to work out, but the hotel gym has minimal equipment and it’s kinda sad in there.

Moroccan lamb meatballs The Tropicale

Three large meatballs served with charmoula pesto. $10
The Tropicale, Palm Springs CA

These were really good and I love the bright colors on the plate. I think the vibrant green was basil infused olive oil. Charmoula sauce is typically for seafood, but it worked beautifully with the tender lamb meatballs.

Fish taco – Crazy Coyote Tacos

Project 365: Day 89

I really wish I was staying in a hotel closer to downtown and not near the airport in North Charleston. The food options in this area are limited, just fast food or chain restaurants. After work today, a co-worker and I ended up at Ruby Tuesday. Ugh, I’m gonna have to use the rental car and drive into the city soon for dinner.

Fish taco Crazy Coyote Tacos

With cucumber dill sauce, salsa, onions, and cilantro. $3.25 each
Crazy Coyote Tacos, Banning CA

This is my favorite taco at Crazy Coyote. The fish is a nice portion and perfectly cooked. I also love the addition of the cucumber dill sauce!

Chicken taco – Crazy Coyote Tacos

Project 365: Day 88

Flew to Charleston today through Dallas. It was kind of a full day of travel, but was able to get in early enough to check in with work and make it to the hotel. I was starving so I ended up at Waffle House nearby. Oi, this is going to be a long work trip!

Chicken taco Crazy Coyote Tacos

I think 2 tacos is plenty for a small meal at Crazy Coyote. The thick tortillas definitely fill you up. I was glad to find out that the large pieces of chicken were still tender and juicy. They could have been a little more flavorful but these tacos are amazing nonetheless.

Steak taco – Crazy Coyote Tacos

It’s all about the tortillas here! I don’t know if they’re homemade (they taste like it) but these tortillas are amazing! They’re thick and SO flavorful. The steak in this taco was kinda dry so I was glad that the salsa helped moisten the whole thing.
