“Felino” malbec – Starbelly

"Felino" malbec - Starbelly

Red wine by Paul Hobbs, Vina Cobos, Mendoza, Argentina 2010. $11
Starbelly, San Francisco CA

I love the back patio at Starbelly. It’s very relaxing back there, and the servers are usually great. The 2-top tables are pretty small though so you definitely have to shuffle your plates and glasses around as things come out.

Transamerica Pyramid Building, Financial District. During graduate school, I had a office temp job at a construction firm in this office building, lol!

Filon garnacha 2010 – Lolo

Filon garnacha 2010 - Lolo
Calatayud, Spain. Red wine, berries, leather, anise. Glass $8
Lolo, San Francisco CA

This dinner started off well with the wine (it tasted pretty good), but quickly went downhill from there. The service was sporadic and the timing was WAY off!

Pink flowered succulent (Echeveria sp., Crassulaceae)

Pink flowered succulent (Echeveria sp., Crassulaceae), Dolores Street. My neighbor has a simple planter filled with beautiful succulents and other drought tolerant plants. Love the color of this one!

Filus malbec 2008 – Tuba Restaurant and Grill

Filus malbec 2008 - Tuba Restaurant and Grill

Red wine, Argentina. An affordable, easy, drinkable wine that pairs well with most dishes. $7 glass

Mission Dolores High School
Mission Dolores High School. Coming from a small town, it amazes me that city kids get to attend really cool high schools in historic buildings. I guess it’s probably lost on them at the moment, but they’ll appreciate it later in life.

Sangria – Cafe Mystique

Sangria - Cafe Mystique

Fruity red wine sangria garnished with strawberry, lemon, apple, and mint. Happy hour $4.95
Cafe Mystique, San Francisco CA

I’ve often overlooked this restaurant on Castro Street, but I’m SO glad I finally tried it. They have a great happy hour, the food is tasty, and the service is SO friendly! Sometimes, it’s all about the details. Not only were these sangrias delicious, but I love all the large garnishes (that lemon knot is super cute) and they even add a skewer to better retrieve the alcohol soaked fruit.

Burning phoenix graffiti mural, The Mission
Burning phoenix graffiti mural, The Mission. I can honestly say that I’d never noticed this artwork before along 24th Street, but it’s frickin’ AMAZING! I love the colors and the positioning of everything. One of my favorites so far!

Chicken pesto pizza – Firewood Cafe

Chicken pesto pizza Firewood Cafe
Rotisserie chicken, pesto sauce, roasted red peppers and sliced red onions. $10.95
Firewood Cafe, San Francisco CA

This pizza was ok. I usually wouldn’t say this, but I think it had too many toppings and pesto. The crust seemed weighted down by everything. I prefer some of their other pizza options.

Chicken pesto pizza - Firewood Cafe
July 3, 2015. $12.95
This was at SFO and it wasn’t as good. The crust was thicker and a little burnt. Not my favorite.

Pinot noir Firewood Cafe

Pinot noir, red wine. $6.95

Dolores Park, San Francisco
View from Dolores Park. From the corner of Church and 20th Streets, you can get a spectacular view of the city. Mission Dolores High School is to the left and the newly remodeled playground is to the right. On a warm, sunny day Dolores Park gets packed with hipsters and sunbathers!

Toro sangria – Toro Salao

Project 365: Day 112

Wow, it’s been a long day! We’re finally in Dublin, but we spent most of the day waiting in London Heathrow Airport. That’s a damn large airport! Once we cleared customs, we probably spent 20 minutes walking to Terminal 1. They do things differently at that airport. Gates aren’t announced until about 30 minutes prior to boarding so you have to just wait there and keep checking the screens until your flight information is updated. I guess it makes sense to do it that way to accommodate for gate changes, but it just seems weird not knowing the gate number beforehand so you can at least be in the general vicinity. Once we finally got our gate number, we had to book it to get to what seemed like another terminal. We even had to go through another set of security!

Anyway, we’re just chilling in the room right now and drinking cocktails with vodka I had brought from the States. We’re gonna head out for dinner soon, then have drinks at Pantibar afterward since it’s somewhat nearby. Ryan and David arrived earlier today so they’ve had a little time to look around before we got in. It’s raining a little bit outside, but we’re not gonna let that put a damper on our spirits!

Toro sangria Toro Salao

Red wine with Bacardi rum, brandy, orange liquor, lemon-lime juice, orange juice and mixed fruits. Media jarra (small pitcher) $24
Toro Salao, Old San Juan, PUERTO RICO

This sangria was very tasty! It had a deep, rich flavor and was the perfect beverage for our last morning in San Juan!

Old San Juan Cemetery
Looking towards the Cementerio de San Juan (Old San Juan Cemetery) and the Castillo San Felipe del Morro (Morro Castle).

Sangria – Restaurante Triana

Sangria Restaurante Triana
1/2 pitcher red sangria. $20
Restaurante Triana, Old San Juan, PUERTO RICO

Silverfox and I ducked into Restaurante Triana to grab a lazy, afternoon drink. We had been walking all morning and decided that we needed a reward, lol. The sangria there was pretty good and the service was very friendly.

San Juan Gate

The red San Juan Gate. Back in the day, this was the main entrance to the city. On the ceiling of the gate there is an inscription that reads, “Benedictus qui venit in nomine domini” which translates to “blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord”.

Cocktails – Restaurante Raices

Mojito Enamora'o Restaurante Raices
Mojito Enamora’o. A Puertorican classic prepared with Bacardi rum, mint, lemon, sugar, and Bacardi Limon. $8

Sangria Nostalgia Boricua Restaurante Raices
Sangria Nostalgia Boricua. Red wine cocktail. $6
Restaurante Raices, Old San Juan, PUERTO RICO

These were sad excuses for cocktails, which makes it even more sad because this was the first meal of our Caribbean vacation. The cheap, sheet metal cups were the size of thimbles. I want to say that that is a good thing because you don’t have to force down much of these sugar-water abominations, but because it takes forever to order and even longer to receive them, I wanted more volume to tide me over before we could order replacements. If you’re ever in Old San Juan, DO NOT go to this restaurant unless you want horrible drinks and even worse food. I left feeling like a sucker.

Puerto Rico mural

This mural painted on a garage door in the middle of Old San Juan caught my eye.

Roasted red pepper salad – Canela

Project 365: Day 62

Tried out Canela for a pre-birthday celebration for Silverfox. My roommate had already been here and said that it was pretty good. We’re planning to have a nicer dinner in San Juan next week to really celebrate Silverfox’s birthday but it’s nice to go out and have a dinner closer to the actual date of his special day.

Roasted red pepper salad Canela

With apple, manchego cheese, walnut, flat leaf parsley, lemon, olive oil, egg. $8
Canela, San Francisco

This salad was really refreshing. I loved all the different components but I have to say that the Italian parsley was killer in this salad! In combination with the lemon, it really helped to brighten up the salad and gave it a fanastic flavor. I would definitely order this again!

Red sangria Canela

Red sangria. Bottle $21
I really enjoyed this sangria. It was overly sweet and the wine that they used had a great flavor. It wasn’t too bitter or funky tasting. Noms!

Roasted garlic and broccoli rabe pizza – Uva Enoteca

Roasted garlic and broccoli rabe pizza Uva Enoteca

With smoked cheese and tomatoes. $14
Uva Enoteca, San Francisco

I wasn’t a huge fan of this pizza. I enjoyed the flavors but the whole thing was heavy and clunky. The crust had an odd, dense texture which was surprising since it was thin. It’s all about the crust, right?! The pizza was also on the small side. Don’t think I’ll be ordering pizzas from Uva Enoteca again.

Roasted garlic and broccoli rabe pizza Uva Enoteca

This looks better than it tasted.

Red wines Uva Enoteca

Red wines.
Marzemino, Terre Gioia, Trentino, 2009. $10 for 8oz
Merlot, Chopris, Friuli, 2004. $9 for 8oz
They have a nice selection! These are sold by 2oz or 8oz. I like that the 8oz is served in a small, cute carafe.

Frances red wine – Frances

Frances red wine

Beverage director Paul blends this fresh and delicious wine with Marco Cappelli from Miraflores Winery. $1 per ounce
Frances, San Francisco

I love that you can get wine here by the ounce! Not that it really prevents you (or maybe just us) from drinking more. But it’s a great concept. The Frances red wine is actually a very tasty table red. It goes down easily and has enough flavor and body to keep you interested.

Toasted almonds Frances

Toasted almonds. This complimentary snacks was slightly sweet and completely addicting. Frances even makes almonds irresistible!
