Ham and cheese strata – Rustic Bakery
Savory layers of ham and cheese and foccacia bread. $3.95
Rustic Bakery, Novato CA
This was a lot denser than I was expecting. The focaccia was really heavy and there wasn’t enough ham and cheese to break it up. The strata was also pretty dry so I wish I had also ordered an ice coffee.
Yellow Peruvian lily centerpiece (Alstroemeria sp., Alstroemeriaceae).
Mimosa – Hilltop 1892
Kenwood sparkling wine, fresh squeezed orange juice. $8
Hilltop 1892, Novato CA
The views from this restaurant are pretty nice! It’s a great place to have a relaxing weekend brunch. The service seems pretty friendly, but the food needed a little improvement.
Orange cactus flower (Rebutia sp., Cactaceae), Kentfield.
Chicharron – Padrecito
Crispy pork skin and fava bean-pepita “sikil pak”. $10
Padrecito, San Francisco CA
Wow, these were the BEST chincharrones I’ve had in a long time! They arrived at the table straight from the fryer so they were still crackling and lively. The pork skins were SO light and airy and perfect. The sikil pak dip was new to me. It had a great flavor and texture and I loved the sunflower seeds.

Bourbon lemonade – Lookout
Hmm, this is a great refreshing way to enjoy bourbon on a sunny day. The lemonade helps to cut the sometimes strong taste of the bourbon.
Lookout, San Francisco CA
Emerging weeds at the J-Church Muni stop.
Beef brisket sandwich – Il Cane Rosso
Marin Sun Farms beef brisket, cherry tomato conserva, lemon aioli. $10
Il Cane Rosso, San Francisco CA
Mmm, I really liked this sandwich. All the ingredients were SO tasty, but I just wish they had used a slightly softer bread. This one was really crispy and dense and it took quite some effort to chew through. But paired with a yummy beer and sitting outside on the water, I really couldn’t complain too much! 🙂
7×7 Magazine’s The Big Eat San Francisco: 100 Things to Eat + Drink Before You Die – 2010
Rayon Vert Belgian-style pale ale. $5
Lamb’s ear flowers (Stachys byzantina, Lamiaceae), Embarcadero with the Bay Bridge in the background.
Curry pan – Sandbox Bakery
Challah bread filled with curried ground beef. $3.75
Sandbox Bakery, San Francisco CA
I’ve had this a few times now, and this time around the curry bread was a little different. It used to be more flat and triangularly shaped. Now it has a more round shape. This is probably a good thing since it can accommodate more filling, but it has also increased in price. I like this pan, but I don’t think it’s amazing or special enough to be on the 7×7 Big Eat List.

Pupusa de chicharron – La Santaneca de la Mission
Filled with pork served with curtido. Each $1.75
La Santaneca de la Mission, San Francisco CA
Mmm, I like the pupusas at La Santaneca. They have a great texture and they’re pretty tasty. They’re also super affordable so you don’t feel guilty pigging out, hehe!
Cliff at Ocean Beach.
Sauteed abalone – Oswald
With watercress, apple and bacon. $15
Oswald, Santa Cruz CA
Mmm! I don’t eat abalone very often, but I’m definitely a fan when it’s prepared correctly. It has a tendency to become very tough and chewy so a skilled hand is needed for this delicate protein. Oswald did a great job with this dish. The abalone was beautifully cooked and still tender and very flavorful. NOMS!
Milk thistle (Silybum marianum, Asteraceae), Pigeon Point, Pescadero.
French fries – Harvey’s
With a side of ranch dressing. $4.95
Harvey’s, San Francisco CA
OK, you know I’ve probably been out at the bars if I’m ordering fries with ranch dressing, lol! These were really good though, but then again I’m sure everything tastes good that late at night. 🙂
