Gamja fries – Namu Gaji

Gamja fries - Namu Gaji
A poutine-like stoner favorite. Hand cut organic potato, kimchee relish, gochujang, kewpie mayo, teriyaki, green onion, bulgogi beef. $10
Namu Gaji, San Francisco CA

These French fries are a lot of everything! I can see why they’re a popular hangover item. The bulgogi was really good and I liked all the different condiments. Perhaps it was because I wasn’t hung over, but these fries were verging on too much flavor-attack for me.

Sommariva mimosa - Namu Gaji
Sommariva mimosa. $10
I was not impressed by this flat, overpriced mimosa.

Lamb scrumpets – The Cavalier

Lamb scrumpets - The Cavalier
Pickled mint and chile. $15
The Cavalier, San Francisco CA

I wasn’t sure what I was gonna get when I ordered these lamb scrumpets. I thought maybe it would be similar to a pasty or something. They ended up being breaded and fried lamb riblets, and they were AMAZING! They were tender, flavorful, and perfectly fried. The accompanying mint and chile sauce was great too. NOMS!

Oysters on the half shell – District

Oysters on the half shell - District
Champagne mignonette, fresh horseradish and lemon. Dozen $30
District, San Francisco CA

Mmm, these oyster were small, fresh and perfect! I liked the champagne mignonette, but didn’t use much of the freshly grated horseradish. I also love coming to District because my favorite waiter (and friend) always hooks us up!

Sparkling wines - District
Purete de Silex, Rose, Cremant de Loire, France NV. $12
Charme de Jean Paul Brun, Blanc de Blanc, Burgundy, France NV. $15

Angels on horseback – Anchor & Hope

Angels on horseback - Anchor & Hope
Fried oyster wrapped in bacon, with arugula and aioli. Happy hour, each $3.50
Anchor & Hope, San Francisco CA

This fast good, but even with the sauce the entire bite was really dry! Between the fried oyster and the dry bacon, this appetizer was in desperate need of some moisture. Maybe they just overcooked my order, but I would never put this lame bite on a must-eat list.

Cristalino cava - Anchor & Hope
Cava, Cristalino, Spain NV. Happy hour $5

Salt and pepper fried calamari – Butterfly Restaurant

Salt and pepper fried calamari - Butterfly Restaurant
Ponzu cucumbers, toasted garlic, micro cilantro, tabasco remoulade. $11
Butterfly Restaurant, San Francisco CA

I liked the presentation of this dish, but the calamari itself was over-fried and super dry! Yuck. I couldn’t get over that part. The tabasco remoulade was also pretty bland for being advertised as having hot sauce. It didn’t have to be super hot and spicy, but it could have at least had more flavor.

Edamame - Butterfly Restaurant
Edamame. Complimentary

Cebiche mixto – La Mar Cebicheria Peruana

Cebiche mixto - La Mar Cebicheria Peruana
Happy hour $6
La Mar Cebicheria Peruana, San Francisco CA

This place is a mad house during happy hour! It’s filled with a mixture of tourists strolling the Embarcadero and the FiDi after-work crowd. I was able to squeeze in at the end of the bar and had a yummy (and nicely priced) snack before meeting my nephew for dinner down the street. The ceviche was good albeit small. I liked the assortment of ingredients and everything tasted really fresh. The pisco sour was also very tasty and much needed after a long day at work.

Tiger prawn ravioles – L’Ardoise

Tiger prawn ravioles - L'Ardoise
With sauce vierge and fresh mixed herbs. $11
L’Ardoise, San Francisco CA

Wow, this appetizer certainly was rich! If I hadn’t looked it up, I would have been certain that the sauce vierge had cream in it. These ravioles simply melted and in your mouth and had a lovely seafood flavor. I’m not sure I could have eaten much more than half the dish though. I needed to save room for my large entree (and alcohol, lol).

Baguette and butter - L'Ardoise
Baguette and butter. Complimentary

Office Holiday Party Extravaganza!

So my office held our 2nd Annual Holiday Potluck and everyone (well almost everyone) brought delicious food to share! I’m posting some of the yummy food so you can get a few ideas for your next holiday get together.  If all else fails, make a Costco run apparently. I mean who needs a fancy corporate holiday party when you can have a good ole potluck?! All names have been changed to protect the innocent! 🙂

Traditional Midwestern Queso Surprise

Traditional midwestern queso surprise – vicenteSF
OK, I made that name up but my roommate IS from Kansas and he makes this delicious dip once in a while. Just combine Velveeta cheese (SO American!) with browned ground beef and a can of Ro-Tel brand diced tomatoes with chiles (another midwestern staple) in a crock pot. Set it and forget it! It’s customary to eat this with potato chips, not tortilla chips, silly!
